About

The Motivation

Drupal is becoming a popular framework for building some of the largest sites on the Internet. There are lots of free and paid sites available to learn how to use Drupal. However, even with the existing sites the demand for skilled Drupal developers outstrips the supply and the trend is expected to continue. There's clearly a need for an option that can increase the Drupal talent pool. So, inspired by the model of Khan Academy, I have decided to create Teach Yourself Drupal as a Ridiculously Open Online Self Training Site.

The Budget

The funds raised through this Kickstarter project will be used to:

  • Purchase better equipment for producing the screen casts
  • Pay the licensing fee(s) to use Drupal in the domain name(s)
  • Pay for the web hosting costs
  • Pay for (a minimum of) 1000 hours of my time (and / or others' time) to develop the prototype
  • Cover Kickstarter's 5% fee
  • Cover fees from Amazon Payments
  • Pay for creating and shipping the Rewards

The Deliverables

The (minimum) deliverables for this project will be the Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Drupal 7 teaching projects, their corresponding screencasts and a basic membership site. Here is an outline of what I have planned out so far. Note that the existing beginner site is to give an example of type of approach I will take to build the marketing brochure site. In reality, I'd like to build welcometodrupal.org. You can see that I still don't have the intermediate and advanced projects spec'ed out. But, I'd like to build drupalstories.org for the intermediate project. The advanced project will likely be the teachyourselfdrupal.org site itself. So, I can't say exactly how many videos total and how many hours of video there will be.

The Vision

The ultimate vision for this project is that it will be funded by sponsors who will support ongoing hosting and development costs and that it will become the de facto portal for learning all things related to Drupal as well as an engine to contribute to the Drupal project and the Drupal community.

The Invitation to Collaborate

If you would like to provide suggestions or feedback about this campaign you may use its issue queue on Github. In fact, you can even contribute to the wiki.

The Raw Footage

If you are interested in checking out the messy process of producing the video you can have a look at the YouTube channel.

Risks and challenges

I have extensive experience in building Drupal sites, using contributed as well as custom themes and modules. Additionally, I have extensive experience in teaching from elementary through college level. So, there are minimal risks involved in the completion of the project.

The primary risk is whether I can get the campaign funded. But, that's where you come in. Please back me for whatever amount you can and then help spread the word about the campaign. If I had to choose, I would rather have 6400 backers at $10 each than 64 backers at $1000 each. The more backers I have for the project the easier it will be to overcome the secondary risk (see below).

The secondary risk is whether I will be able to attract the ongoing sponsorship to ensure the ability to continue to develop new modules and provide the site as a free resource for all. I believe that there is more than enough demand for competent Drupal site builders, themers and developers to support the claim that it is in the interest of a substantial number of organizations to support the existence of the site. So, a major key will be to attract a large and engaged user base that will learn a solid skill set and that will become part of the available talent pool.

In the event that I am unable to bring the site to a self-sustaining state (through the support of sponsors or other means), I pledge that I will still make it available as a free learning resource for one year from the time of launch.
