About

The World's First Virtual-Reality Streaming Platform For User Uploaded 360 Videos

An immersive experience

What was once strictly a science fiction fantasy is becoming a reality. With the introduction of VR devices such as the Oculus Rift and the Samsung Gear VR, a brand new visual experience is being created – one that immerses viewers in any imaginable environment. This new form of 360-degree immersive media means that watching a video will no longer be a passive experience. Instead, viewers will find themselves active participants in their own movies, allowing them to feel they are truly in the scene.

Virtual reality movies are coming—and they’re going to be crazy - Salvador Rodriguez, Quartz

A dedicated virtual-reality 360 degree video website

At vcemo, we are building a virtual-reality (VR) streaming website, a platform that will allow users to upload videos shot in 360 degrees, free of charge, whether from commercial products such as Giroptic or bublcam, professional 360-degree cinema cameras such as Jaunt, or individual camera setups. One example of such a camera setup is multiple Go-Pro cameras in a Freedom360 holder.

Along with filmed content, animated 360 environments can also be easily uploaded to our site as well. Our platform will then permit other users to stream these experiences to their individual VR devices, such as the Oculus Rift or iOS/Android phones in VR phone holders, which allow users to turn their smartphone into a VR device.

We want our site to be accessible by any and all VR devices that enter the marketplace over the coming years, as well as one that doesn't sell user information. Those are two pillars for this project, we want to be cross-platform, and we want to emphasize user privacy.

We know what needs to be done for our PC platform for the Oculus Rift and are working hard to get a finished product. The area in which we need the most work is in our mobile platform. We need help to build apps for iOS and Android that will allow users, using a few different options of phone holders,  such as Samsung Gear VRDiveDODOcaseVR ONE, or AirVR, to convert their iOS or Android device into a virtual reality device.

Beyond previously recorded content, we are also working on ways to stream live 360-degree content to computer and phone VR devices. But... one step at a time.

A flexible platform

To nurture this new era of cinema, we are building a platform that will be completely viewable both in the Oculus Rift and on iOS or Android devices. When using a computer and the Oculus Rift, our site will be navigable with a mouse, the Leap Motion, or head tracking, which allows the user to look up and down pages and select videos. Our easy-to-navigate platform will organize VR experiences in a variety of ways for finding content, including trending, featured, following, content channels, categories and recommendations (opt-in only, to protect user privacy). If the user chooses for our algorithms to analyze the videos they watch and like in order to recommend new suggestions, that is all we will do with that information. We don't want to sell your data.

vcemo online platform:

vcemo iOS and Android apps:

 An outlet for original films

We are proud to be creating the first location for uploading and watching free 360-degree VR content, and our hearts will be with our crowd-sourced, user-generated videos. However, we will also offer opportunities for users to sell content, giving 360-degree filmmakers large and small an opportunity to generate revenue from their more costly, production-heavy experiences. We believe this offering will not only support and sustain new VR filmmaking efforts, but give our viewers access to ever-more-amazing environments.

Already, vcemo has begun sourcing free content. We have talked to many interested parties about streaming their 360-degree experiences, including a trip through Paris and a journey to the edge of the Earth's atmosphere on a weather balloon.

We have talked to many content producers who are interested in putting their videos on vcemo, people such as Polygon Window Productions, Jumpgate VR, OKIO-studio, Snake River, Don Whitaker, INTREPID 360° and Panocam 3d, and we are very excited to see them upload some of the first content to this new platform.

Special thanks to all of our early content providers!

For content producers

We want to facilitate a network for users and creators to connect with each other to keep creating new and awesome stuff. Our user pages give everyone the ability to see all the work they've uploaded on vcemo (Creations), the projects they have worked on which other users have uploaded (Projects), their likes, comments, and shares (Activity), along with who they follow and whose following them.

Why our project needs your contribution

Creating, maintaining, and growing both our website and our phone applications has proven to be a costly task. So we decided it was time ask you -- yes you, the beautiful person currently reading the words on this page -- not only to help keep vcemo alive, but to make it the best it can possibly be.

You can help us in a variety of ways, and your gifts will be greatly appreciated and rewarded to our best ability. We've made some comfortable clothing with clean, simple designs for you, the same clothes we wear when we work, along with some cool stickers. If you have an Oculus Rift, you can purchase beta access and start enjoying our site. The site can also be beta tested without a virtual reality device if you want to use your mouse or keys to navigate 360 videos instead. While this will be far from the true experience, it may give you an idea of what we are trying to do, and inspire you to get a Rift when they come to market. We are also offering beta testing for our Android and iOS apps. These will come a little later down the line, but when they do, we would love your opinion. Any way you can help would be greatly appreciated.

The inner workings

VR uses a first-person, split-screen view, low-latency motion tracking and a 360-degree field of view to recreate the brain’s natural visual functions. As it does, the viewer becomes truly immersed in the environment, allowing the “spectator” aspect of traditional film to be removed almost entirely and offering an emotional attachment to the images on the screen that has never before been experienced. Full immersion means that VR has the potential to provide news stories that truly resonate with people: Imagine being at the center of a crowd during a protest march. VR can also provide educational experiences that give a true understanding of environments, whether exploring the depths of the ocean, getting lost in the jungle, or simply in a college classroom on the other side of the world. And VR can provide intense life experiences, from sky diving, to traveling in the depths of space, to hiking Mount Everest.

Now it’s your turn

Developers, filmmakers, educators, students, creators, dreamers – this platform is for you. Whether you support us with funding, send your ideas, upload your VR experiences to the site, or simply tell all your friends, we hope you will work with you to make vcemo the best it can be.

About the vcemo team

The vcemo team met at Vassar College (although that has nothing to do with the vc in vcemo) in Poughkeepsie, New York. Although we each have a unique background and expertise, whether in neuroscience, computer programming or film, we have all, from the beginning, had a common goal: to foster this budding new era of cinema – cinema that creates experiences with an incredible proximity to reality. Here at vcemo, we believe that virtual reality will forever change the way films are created and consumed, and we are truly excited to play a role in aggregating and organizing the plethora of new VR experiences being created even now – experiences that will take viewers from passive spectators to active participants. The vcemo team would like to thank you for checking out our project, and we hope you will work with us to see it come to life.

Risks and challenges

The risks and challenges are somewhat hard to predict as with any project. One of the largest ones is time. Right now there is so much to do and not enough people to do it. The way we overcome that is more financial backing so that we can better support our development team. Technical challenges are related to the adoption of the technology required for our project by web browser makers. Chromium, and by extension Google's Chrome, will no longer be supporting a technology that is essential to maintaining very low latency response and Google's management has indefinitely stalled adoption of the WebVR standard in Chrome, the browser used by about 60% of internet users according to W3C. This is a very shortsighted move that hints at the lack of understanding some have about how huge VR is and will be. Firefox development builds include WebVR and when available for stable distribution, we will recommend using Firefox. However while adoption progresses, we want people to be able to plug their headset into their machine and still have our site work. In the interim we will also be utilizing plugins that will allow web browsers to access sensor data. In the long term we hope to have the influence to advance VR as a medium and challenge faulty stewardship.
