Chinese New Year Progress
Chinese New Year, also known as The Spring Festival, is the biggest holiday season in China. It’s like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Independence Day, and New Year rolled into one. Everyone goes home. Everything shuts down. For us, it was a race against time. We did as much as we could before we had to leave ourselves.
What we accomplished?
We boxed 160 units. We definitely could’ve done more if not for the dwindling workforce.
Two weeks before Chinese New Year, Feb 16, there's a slowdown before the shutdown as workers begin to leave. They do so to avoid joining the seasonal exodus that clogs transport networks.
Our last day of production was Feb 9.
How many were shipped?
We were able to ship 85 units before the cut-off.
Everywhere businesses are rushing to have their goods out. To manage the volume, our shipping agent would only accept goods until Feb 6. After that, there would be a risk of goods being stranded in storage.
When do we resume?
We resume production and shipments on March 5.
The official national holiday period is Feb 15-21. But in essence, it’s the entire fortnight that enclose those dates, plus a week for things to get back to business-as-usual. So really, work won’t resume until the second Monday after CNY.
What is the current production rate?
We're now clocking in at 100-150 units per month, all things considered.
This is still way below out target capacity. Once we're through with the pilot production phase, we will ramp it up to 500 per month. To achieve this, we’ll have to rework and polish our process and hire additional workers. We'll creep up to that number as we settle into a groove.
“Where’s my Vaquform?”
If you didn’t receive a tracking number, your box was not among the 85 that made the cut.
Shipment status will soon be available on the website through a convenient web app. Please stay tuned for that.
“Can I have my unit shipped later?”
Yes, indeed. As you might have gathered we are still making tiny adjustments based on early feedback. For that reason some are opting to waiting a while longer to get a more 'settled' iteration of Vaquform.
We've put up a sign-up page for those who want to join the list:
While our top priority is to fulfill Kickstarter rewards and website pre-orders, we are taking side glances into the future.
Our gut tells us vacuum forming will one day be as commonplace as 3D printing. We want to be the benchmark of this emerging desktop fabrication category.
So as much as it’s hurting our bottomline to do all the things we’re doing to get it right, we’re committed to getting it right. That bright future distracting us wouldn't be in our periphery if it weren’t for you guys. We're very grateful.
Money is tight. We’ve just about used up the Kickstarter campaign money. But it’s all good. With careful budgeting, we could feed back everything we’re learning into a comprehensive production manual which we could then take to start that second production line.
There are some exciting things up ahead. We’re just getting started. Here's some photos from our pre-CNY production. We promise to keep up the pace!
