Detective: City of Angels is an epic narrative-driven board game set in the dark and violent world of 1940's Los Angeles. Most players will step into the shoes of LAPD Homicide detectives that will do whatever it takes to solve the case, but one player will take on the role of The Chisel whose goal is to stall and misdirect the detectives at every turn.
Now, we are back with the newest expansion featuring brand new cases for the game Detective: Smoke and Mirrors. Smoke and Mirrors features some of the hardest cases created so far. These ain't for no gumshoes, ya hear? But don't worry, if you are new to Detective, you can get the game and all of the expansions right here in our ALL-IN Wise Head pledge level!
The version of Detective: City of Angels you will get in this Kickstarter is VRG Select. This means that it will not be sold through normal distribution channels. We may offer it for sale on our website, at conventions, and to registered VRG Select Retailers that order directly from us. If you are a retailer, see below on how to become a VRG Select Retailer!
Smoke and Mirrors will now come with FOUR cases with more than 240 cards!
These cases are some of the most challenging and complex we've ever designed. Not only will they test your mystery-solving skills to the utmost, each case features new mechanics, new types of cards, and new solve requirements. In the past, you only had to determine the guilty suspect, the murder weapon, and the motive. What happens when you ALSO have to identify each additional accomplice that was involved as well as where the next crime could take place?
Are you new to Detective? Well keep reading and we'll show you how it works!
Detectives will explore every shadowy corner of the City of Angels, rendered in gorgeous and authentic detail on a large game board. The game board is based on an amazing public domain map created in 1932 by K. M. Leuschner, which Vincent has lovingly updated and adorned with his own touches.
You can download the rulebook by clicking the below button, or simply go to Rules School with The Gameboy Geek in the video below!
With the option to play competitively, cooperatively, or even solo, Detective: City of Angels will provide hours of mystery-solving gaming (see Game Modes section below).
Plus, go all in for the Wise Head pledge level and get the Bullets Over Hollywood AND theSmoke and Mirrors expansions at a great price! You can even opt for Two Wave shipping to start enjoying Detective content THIS YEAR! (see the Shipping section below for details)
We encourage multiple copy pledges which can really help save on shipping. If you are interested in multiple copies you will be able to add them in the pledge manager. If you are interested in a group buy (4 or more copies), please contact the project creator using the Kickstarter messaging system for details.
We are thrilled to offer From Pen to Gun, an in-depth look at Vincent Dutrait's incredible art for Detective: City of Angels. Featuring a behind-the-scenes look at Dutrait's process and inspiration, as well chapters on the making-of-the-game from designer Evan Derrick, this beautiful, full-color art book is a must-have for fans of Detective as well as connoisseurs of boardgame art.
Simply add $20 to your pledge to receive From Pen to Gun.
While we highly recommend the game be played in CLASSIC MODE where everyone is playing competitively against each other AND The Chisel, the versatility of Detective: City of Angels is such that it can also be played in HEAD TO HEAD mode with one Detective player against The Chisel, or in SLEUTH MODE Cooperatively/Solitaire with no Chisel player.
Playing HEAD TO HEAD against the Chisel removes the "corruption" elements of multiple players bribing and snitching their way to victory, but there is still a battle of wits with the Chisel as you try to unravel the mystery.
Alternatively, in SLEUTH MODE, you will use a paragraph book and case grid cards that allows the game to be played without a Chisel player. The Sleuth book will simulate the play of the Chisel. In particular, playing the game solo is a great way to prepare for your first game as The Chisel!
In each of these modes of play the ARC system is in the spotlight and the competitive elements of the game, like scratch and bribe actions, are removed. The focus is primarily on solving the case and immersing yourself in the role of a detective.
With so many cases included and multiple expansions, you'll be playing and enjoying Detective: City of Angels for a long time to come. But for those who want EVEN MORE, or those with a creative spark, you can use our Case Design Guide and Case Design Kit to design your very own cases! Or if you just want more cases, there are already some FAN MADE CASES that have been created using our official Case Design Kit!
Join us in our Facebook Community group to discuss the game, fan made cases, and more!
For a more immersive experience into the City of Angels, Van Ryder Games is pleased to present narration for all 13 of the case briefings in both Detective: City of Angels and Detective: Bullets over Hollywood. We have heard from MANY of you and we know there is a desire for this game in other languages. We have heard from so many of you wanting French, German, Spanish, Italian, and others.
We have been in negotiations with various different publishing partners to come to an agreement on foreign language versions, but as of this time have not officially secured any partners. Much of the feedback we have gotten is that it is "too big", "too much to translate", "too expensive to produce", "too high of a retail price to be successful" in that channel. And frankly we understand those concerns, many of which are why it is a VRG Select title for us!
But, we are not giving up on this possibility! We are in discussions about what a retail version might look like and if it can work for our partners. This would likely be a smaller version of the base game with 5 cases and some component and materials changes to bring the price down.
We will update the below chart as the campaign goes on, here is how it looks just a few hours into the campaign.

Risks and challenges
Van Ryder Games has successfully funded and fulfilled many projects. We learn more and more with each experience. Our goal is to get the game to you, our supporters, as quickly as possible, but we won't sacrifice quality for speed.
There are the usual risks of printing, shipping, customs, and other unintended delays, but you can be sure we will deliver the game to you as promised. Feel free to ask any of our returning backers!
A few remarks we want to share with you regarding our approach for our projects, including this one.
1. Communication is of the utmost importance to us. Please ask any and all questions and we will answer as quickly as possible.
2. Our stretch goal items are determined by us before the campaign begins, in the event all of them are achieved we will not add more as it puts our project timeline and cost at risk.
3. Your comments and feedback are REALLY important to us. If you have an idea, concern, or compliment, please share it with us! We can't promise to implement or act on every idea that comes our way, but we will certainly consider and listen to each one!
4. We pledge to keep a positive attitude regardless of the success or failure of this project and we ask that you do the same.
5. To have fun! Kickstarter projects can be stressful, but these are games and the most important thing is to have FUN!
Please note the following is our policy on pledges and refunds.
All pledges are final upon the completion of the funding period, however we may, at our sole discretion, refund your pledge in full if the request is made within two weeks of the end of the campaign. Any request for refund after more than two weeks has passed, if accepted by us, will be subject to a 10-20% cancellation fee to account for KS fees and administrative expenses. Please note that, anyone that does not complete the pledge manager by our required deadlines will not be eligible for a refund for any reason, including the assessment of additional shipping fees for expenses related to the delinquency of the backer completing their survey information.
We require that our pledge manager and/or survey be completed in a timely manner so that we can process orders efficiently and on time. Completing your survey late at any point beyond the deadline we communicate AND/OR failure to pay shipping in a timely manner when the surveys are reopened, could result in significant delays in receiving your rewards, additional shipping expense, duties, taxes, or other fees to be paid by you, and you will not be eligible for a refund for any reason. We give plenty of time to complete the survey, so please do so in a timely manner to avoid any inconvenience or delay. Any survey that is not completed within 30 days from final fulfillment (defined as the last date of shipping of KS rewards for your region) will result in your pledge being considered abandoned and any amount pledged will be considered a gift in support of the project.
By pledging to this project you understand the risks, challenges, and pledge terms we have laid out here, and agree to be bound by them. If you do not agree to these terms, please do not pledge for this project and wait for the possibility of the game to become available direct or in the retail market.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
