Who are we:
Kate Pickering and Scott McIntyre met through a love of teaching jewellery and passing on their skills. They share a similar ethos; that making is a great power that can be harnessed and shared to make an incredible industry in Scotland.
Kate founded Vanilla Ink Studios in 2009 in Dundee and now operates from MAKLab Charing Cross in Glasgow and is Scotland’s unique jewellery studio with the aim of developing new talent by providing a supportive ‘Inkubator’. Known for it’s professional development programme that is aimed at bridging the gap from education to industry, the programme enables start up jewellers in their own transition from student to professional. Vanilla Ink Studios is also used as a base for 6 practising jewellers and teaches a variety of classes to members of the public and professional jewellers alike.
Scott has over 20 years of experience in the industry and is a bench trained goldsmith and has worked for many studios across Edinburgh and Glasgow. In his career he has picked up extensive skills from these various places and has worked tirelessly to ensure he’s at the top of his game where he has received a high level of intense training.
What we want to create:
With your support we will build Vanilla Ink Jewellery School CIC. A school that will inspire, educate and support the jewellery and silversmith industry. It will be equipped to cater for the complete beginner and those interested in starting a career in the industry, to the established maker and industry professional looking to up-skill.
We have committed to a space based in the famous Hidden Lane of Glasgow’s West End. We will open our doors at the end of May on the back of the success of our crowdfunding campaign. We are asking for support to build a workshop, kitted out for 8 people. Within that space we want to work with a range of different communities, from those hard to reach teens, people who have been out of work, asylum seekers or those suffering with anxiety and depression, and use making as a means to develop technical & soft skills, build confidence and learn about entrepreneurship. We will also help support the next generation of makers that will lead to further education or a degree in a Scottish establishment and will come full circle to gain further support from the jewellery school.
We are passionate about the Scottish jewellery industry and believe that we can work together to build an open and supportive community. We listen to the industry and we are nimble so we can respond to the needs. Building on from the success of Vanilla Ink Studios, three years of running the Vanilla Ink programme with 23 jewellers and silversmiths who have taken part and 5 years of teaching classes, we understand how important hand skills are to a goldsmith. We will grow from this concept and bring a new jewellery school to Scotland.
Budget and Timescale:
The project asks for £30,000 to cover the costs of setting up a CIC, one months rent to allow us time to set the space up, tools and equipment for each student to have access to their own set of tools, extraction unit and larger pieces of equipment like a rolling mill and pendant motors for each bench. The higher the specification, the better the space is for the community and what they can have access to.
We are in the process of setting up a Community Interest Company (CIC) and will be approved before the project ends and we are working hard to get collaborators involved in the project to help fund and support it in anyway they can. Your support is helping us buy all the equipment and tools and secure the next months rent within the Hidden Lane.
The Jewellery School will be up and running by the end of May with rewards being sent out by June 2017 and classes being booked on a first come, first serve basis.
Risks and challenges
We have tried to limit any risks or challenges but things may still happen;
1.We have taken over the lease at the Hidden Lane for one year, we are fully committed to getting the school up and running. If we don't make our target we have applied for loans as a back up but obviously we need to keep our monthly costs as low as possible.
2. Selling bespoke classes may cause an issue for booking dates with Scott or myself but we are committed to fulfilling every class over the next year.
3. Our application to become a Community Interest Company may be rejected but we shall be running the company as a limited company by guarantee and our community will always be at the heart of what we do.
Other than that, we expect for the project to run smoothly and have the Jewellery School open by the end of May.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
