This summer Vallejo Shakespeare in the Park, a free community event, is preparing for our 2013 season - show to be announced soon. Performances will be held in Hanns Park Amphitheater, with picnic style seating July 27 & 28, 2013 and August 3 & 4, 2013 in Martinez at the John Muir Amphitheater! This year we have been invited to perform at the Peralta Hacienda Historical Park in Oakland as well. The Peraltas and the Vallejos were both important families in early California history and instrumental in establishing California as a member state of the Union.
Matinee performances, using natural light and sound, means we will not use or need lighting and sound equipment or techs, keeping our production costs low and our performance values high! Still, we need $2550 to cover our actors pay for our upcoming FREE performances.
Then, why, you ask, are we asking for $2805? Fees. Up to 10%. Kickstarter (5%) and credit card fees (3%-5%). In order for us to get the full $2550 we need to help pay our hard working actors, we need to add the additional cost for the fees.
Everyone deserves a little Shakespeare!
Residents of all ages and economic backgrounds are invited to come together for free outdoor theater in Vallejo and other Bay Area cities. Because this is a free event, all funds to pay company members and operations must be raised through grants and other fund raising sources.
This Shakespeare festival is a weekend of live performance to uplift and enrich the lives of local residents through a classical theater performance. The North Bay Area's proximity to the major metropolitan areas should not preclude our residents from experiencing good professional free theater in the park. We believe the arts are an important part of the fabric of a community and we want to do our part to ensure a thriving arts environment and help foster the value of the arts as a public good.
Performance opportunity for the Bay Area theater community!
One of our goals is to provide professional performance opportunities through non-traditional casting to local and Bay Area actors of color. We want our productions to reflect our diverse community and help our audience connect to classical theater with exciting contemporary staging. Funding from Kickstarter will pay our incredibly talented actors. Please support Vallejo Shakespeare in the Park and be sure to come and see the show!!
Risks and challenges
Challenges we face are fundraising enough funds to pay our actors. As our company grows so do our stipends to our dedicated actors. But because our shows are free to the public we do not have any ticket revenue and all money must be raised through grants and personal donations. In the past we have covered our costs by donating our own funds. If we get this Kickstarter campaign we won't have to do that again this year.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
