Below is a quick rundown of the Vaer band system - awesome guidance to help you choose the two straps that you'll receive with your watch!
The Design Journey
This new collection will build off the success of our quartz models and integrates the feedback from thousands of existing Vaer customers. Our automatic designs are well over a year into development, and we’ve gone through a number of prototypes, dial designs, crystals, and movements. We’ve been on the pursuit of perfection, and we believe our final offering is truly and incredible watch. Below are some further design details around the case and movement.
Case Design - Our initial case prototypes were in the 14mm thickness range and front loaded. After talking with customers, reviewing internally, and consulting the editorial community, we concluded that this simply wasn't acceptable.
To solve the problem we worked with a top-tier case designer bring our vision into a 9mm case (10mm including the domed sapphire), that was also back-loaded to allow for easy repair and maintenance. On the aesthetic end, we’ve moved forward with the same beautiful case build that we have with our quartz - smooth flowing lines, brushed stainless steel, with chamfering strategically placed on around the rim of the bezel, as well as on each lug. As with all of our watches, the case here includes a screw down crown and 10 ATM water resistance rating.
Check out some of the media below to see inside of our development process.
Testing - In order to validate the 100m Water Resistance rating of our case, we ran many tests on the prototypes. These tests were held on a Witschi Proofmaster S at 10 BAR (10 ATM, 100m) with complete passes! We're excited to say that these watches will be ocean ready.
Movement Choices - The “go-to” movement choices for brands introducing automatic lines are often the Seiko NH35 and the Miyota 9215. While these “workhorse” movements are reliable, they are also outdated, large, and generally considered “throwaway”, as they’re so cheap. We briefly considered using of these movements in order to keep costs low, but quickly realized that it would be a shame to build such an incredibly watch around a mediocre movement. If an individual is going to spend the time and money to purchase a Vaer automatic, we want to ensure that the purchase is truly worthwhile.
Given the above, we immediately latched on to the Miyota 9015 - it is reliable, accurate, and thin (only 3.9mm), which fits perfectly in our case. It is also in a different performance class that the above mentioned movements, with a 28,800 bph (compared to 21,600). This yields a much smoother sweeping hand.
By popular demand, we also found that many users prefer a Swiss Movement for reasons ranging from quality to heritage. As such, we’re also giving users the option to choose Swiss Made ETA 2824 and ETA 2895 options.
Dial Designs - At Vaer, creating, iterating, and modifying dials is a constant process. We’re always on the lookout for design inspiration, and always excited to release something new. We originally planned to stick with our military-inspired dials (Heritage and Field), which have seen great success in our quartz line. Over the last year, we began to build a dial design with a more modern, Northern European influence - minimalist, brighter colors, and quirky elements. This Kickstarter will be the introduction of that dial in both White and Blue tones.

Risks and challenges
We’ve spent over a year in design and development for this Kickstarter, and we’re incredibly excited that the samples on hand far exceed expectations. We’ve already been through multiple sample iterations with this watch line before bringing it to the public, so the time has been taken to truly perfect the design.
From the production side, we have been working with our manufacturing partner and assembly team for years building and delivering thousands of quartz watches to happy customers. We have a very close relationship with both of these teams, and they’re ready and excited to begin building your watch.
As with any manufacturing process, delays are always possible, so we have built in extra time (“buffer”) for any potential delays in the manufacturing process and expect to ship by or before the projected dates. All of our backers will be in the loop as we communicate updates at every stage of the process.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
