So, how does it work?
The back story
Driven by high theft rates in the industry, in 2010 ITC was approached by a high-quality, leading American-brand automotive tool company to create & engineer a toolbox security solution.
We immediately got to work! Our first sample was created in 2011 and consisted of a wall anchor and mounting plate fixed underneath the rotating caster. This secured the toolbox via the rotating caster but not the fixed caster, allowing the box to be swung around and, if you were strong enough, released. Another issue that presented itself was that each set of casters had different dimensions across the different ranges of tool boxes, in certain instances the caster plates fouled the locking mechanism; this meant different plates for different boxes. In addition, to ensure the highest possible degree of security, the end user would also need to buy a high-security padlock to work in conjunction with the unit; naturally this forced the price up. We needed a rethink.....
The second incarnation of our Tool Box Security Solution was a success! Not only did it overcome the brackets fouling the locking mechanism, it also held the fixed caster in place! In addition, we were able to source and incorporate a high-quality lock which sat inside the unit body meaning the customer no longer needed to supply their own lock; it was a complete unit right out of the box. This version also removed the need for caster plates and simply screwed onto the existing caster axle-bolts which, through mechanical principle, rotate 90 degrees to the wall allowing a perfect locking system; or so we thought....
Each 'model' of tool box has its own 'range' of casters utilising different axle-bolt threads. One range may contain UNF bolts and others UNC bolts; some tool boxes had Whitworth bolts and, in certain instances to make things really interesting, there were even different variations of the three on a single tool box! There was also the problem of the casters being handed to fit the left-hand side of the tool box or the right-hand side; again, to keep us on our toes we came across instances where right-hand casters were fitted to the left-hand side and visa versa!
The solution was left & right-handed units! In addition, as it is not always possible to mount the device to a wall, we developed floor-mounting brackets; these too were handed to work in conjunction with the appropriate unit. At last we had a design that worked!
We presented the product to an independent insurance test house and received the accolade of “Gold security level” in the ground anchor category. The product was launched in 2014 exclusively through Snap-on Tools throughout the UK under the name 'Snaplock'.
The pursuit of continuous improvement has since seen the 'Snaplock' product evolve from a mere 'plate and bracket' type product to a unit which allows the toolbox to be secured and unsecured with ease; the tool box can be released quickly and easily during the day and then secured at night.
It’s ease of use has attracted the attention of high-profile insurance companies who are now recommending the product in line with their policy requirements!
Armed with 2 years worth of customer feedback, we were able to recognise that there was still room for improvement! Although the product worked as designed, the toolbox variations made it difficult for customers to ascertain which particular unit, left-hand or right-hand, was required for each specific configurations i.e. drawers facing outwards for ease of access or with the drawers facing the wall to provide the ultimate protection; could we refine the design even more?
Introducing the latest and most advanced unit to date, the UTS-One7; 'Ultimate Toolbox Security'. Launched in 2017, UTS-One7's unique, patented features allow the standard unit to be configured to fit left-hand AND right-hand swivel caster configured tool boxes with ease! It also overcomes any axle-bolt thread variations which makes the purchase as simple as possible. The floor mounting brackets are now also common and feature an incremental bolting system to make fitting even easier!
For added security, the innovative wheel locators have a final fixing 'bung' which when inserted cannot be removed. Therefore, if you sell your box all you need to buy are replacement wheel locators; if you buy a used tool box with locators already fitted, simply buy the locking mechanism!
With these new advanced features, the product was once again presented for insurance approval and exceeded all expectations! We now have a great product that stops the box being wheeled away by thieves, stops the box tipping over and, if locked with the drawers facing the wall, prevents thieves access to pry open the drawers and steal the tools inside! We think (and now insurance companies agree too) the UTS-One7 is truly the 'Ultimate Toolbox Security System'!
