I am making a short film that deals with eating disorders and self mutilation through the story of two girls struggling to make sense of their pain. Often times, we think these issues are only found in suburban white communities However, through my own experience and that of many others I've met over the last few years it is definitely something that black women struggle with in silence. I want this film to get people talking and sharing, bring forward what has been in hiding.
We plan to shoot the film over a weekend in June. We are asking our crew to work well below their regular rate, donating their time where possible. The equipment will be donated by vendors who believe in the message of the film. We will be blogging and tweeting about our progress- we're super excited about using social media to spread the word about this film, about eating disorders and how girls and women deal with their body image.
I want this film to engage and inspire people with the emotional vulnerability of the characters. The money we raise will be primarily used to ensure a great cast and cinematic feel. The rest will be spent on required film expenses- transportation, meals, production insurance (so we can get equipment for free), and minimal crew rates, including the editor.
Anything beyond the $5000.00 we raise will be used for sound design, color correction and additional post production costs that will help us secure distribution. The goal of the film is to raise awareness and create an impact on this very silent issue that affects so many people.
