OK… I just went back here to check on the update of this project for those of us that actually DID get their units. SO… WHERE should I go (what website) to update my CameraMator (software/firmware etc.) and what APP (for iPhone) should I be using with this.

I still love the product/idea, just not too happy with the issues. So please anyone, can you update the "rest of us" on this product/project. Thanks in advance!

I used the new version of the Sanho app this last weekend. I really only needed to send jpg to my iPad so the person I was doing head shots for could review images every so often. I think the app has come along nicely but still need a bit of polish. In the setup, there is an option to have transferred images automatically displayed. I turned this option on, but it wouldn't stick. We had to manually select the image to view. Shooting in portrait caused the image to be off 90 degrees. I solved this by locking rotation on the iPad. It would be nice if there was something in the app to handle this easier. But the of the transfer wasn't too bad, not super quick but not bad. It was much faster and more reliable than the Eyefi card I tried using.

When I have a chance I'll have to play around with the other features. If Sanho continues to improves the application, this will turn out much better than we thought.

They even included a comparison with CamRanger so it's quite obvious they're trying to compete... to our benefit (since they're selling the iUSBportcamera for $100 more than we paid). Amazingly, this product has turned out OK despite the Usman debacle.

      Hi All,

When i first began to back this project, i had no idea that what's going to happen. But i think i have the worst experience among you all. I had backed for 5 Cameramator units and i have not receive a SINGLE unit till today. Usman emailed me on the 22nd of March in which he said that "There were several overseas shipments that did not reach their recipients due to issues with customs, shipping forms etc. We are building our next batch of units and we will fulfill the non-received backers from this next batch". But he didn't mention when the next batch will be ready. So i waited and waited, and i guess enough is enough. I am getting my money back. A friend of mine have gotten hold of his Camranger and boy don't that made me mad? While he shot away in his job, i just get to review his ipad with pictures flashing.

I think Usman's relative silence, sly lack of comments and vague promises sadly show the real bigger picture. Fortunately my card company has made a chargeback for this. I feel sorry for the people who put their faith in this project and have been burned.

Well, I wish all the luck to Usman, but for me, Sanho's approach has been more clear and communicative of what's going on, and as such I've changed into Sanho's firmware and I must say their approach to invest in the web app is interesting because it makes it platform independent.
Of course an Android specific app will be better, but for now, the webapp for me seems solid and fast enough.
It's still missing advanced features but so far for the basical manual controls and capture it's working fine.

Just in case anyone hasn't noticed Hyper/Sanho has released another firmware and software update. There is also an update manual.

Hutch, I agree with your thoughts and wish Usman the best. It was the lack of communication and action that made me decide to go to the dark side. Time will tell if I made the correct decision.

    15. Missing_small

Creator Hutch on April 9, 2013

I wish Usman the best, but he has been anything but transparent and has provided almost no communication to his backers. I understand that he is not responsible to provide a rebuttal to the lawsuit against him, but he has not even attempted to communicate how he plans to provide hardware now that his hardware source has ended. I'll leave the lawsuit in the courts between Usman and Hyper/Sanho, but what are Usman's plans for the Cameramator product? Without a hardware source, the 455 backers with hardware and the original firmware are the only people that will ever have this product. This doesn't bode well for future development prospects. On the other hand, Hyper/Sanho has a roadmap for this product and has pledged full support to Kickstarter backers. They have the product for sale in multiple channels so the likelihood of continued development is high. Based on what we have seen from both sides, I think that it is hard to classify Hyper/Sanho's intent as malicious. Remember who pulled the application from the App Store and left the backers without a useable product. Since then we have only seen cryptic notes about what really is going on and early versions of the application have been made available. Read the lawsuit and you may change your mind about what is going on.

Hi all. Just thought I would follow up on my post below.

I had mixed feelings about laying down such a strong demand on a public forum. It was a tough decision. We all want hard answers, and Usman may not be in a position to make hard promises at this moment.

Usman did reply to me privately, and offered some direct support. In respect to his own business decisions, I will keep that response private.

I did download the latest iPad app, and it does address a few of the functionality issues that were bothering me. I see that it still has plenty of room for improvement, but it seems that improvements are being made. At this moment, it's not costing me money to wait (I'm not promising anything to my clients based on functionality of the device), so I'm going to hold a little longer, and give Usman a chance to catch CameraMator up with the (seemingly underhanded and definitely malicious) competition. Whatever happened behind closed doors with his business partners I am sure caused some serious disruption in his own plans. If this were my KS project, and I was publicly tossed under a bus like that, I too would ask for a measure of patience and understanding.

Since receiving the device, I have had a few projects where I could have benefited from it though, and that makes me take measure the value of my investment.

I do suggest, Usman, that you provide your backers with a more explicit road map to the features and functions you are implementing, and when you think they will be publicly available. For the most part your communications have been rather cryptic and devoid of in depth feature/function updates. That's still a real concern for everyone. A little more transparency will go a long way to building trust and loyalty.

Please share the update. There are 454 other backers that continue to wait for information on what is going on. Since the time that we have received many promises, Hyper/Sanho (the hardware providers) have released multiple firmware updates, multiple software updates, and a product manual. They are selling the device in multiple outlets including B&H Photo, and seem to be moving forward with the project and having success at it.
I honestly appreciate Usman's work to start this project.. but something failed in the project along the way. I thank Usman for starting me off on this device, but at this point I believe Hyper/Sanho is the direction with the best chance of long term success. They build the hardware, they have the software, they have pledged full support to CameraMator backers, and they have continued incentive to improve the product because they are actively selling it in multiple reputable channels. They also have a solid history of producing electronic devices.

Okay, so I've been pretty patient, and the public responses so far on the part of Sanho has been downright juvenile, to the point that in any contract I would sign, it constitutes a clear breach. So much so as to be to the point of embarrassment.

I still need some sort of real response that you are going to give me a useful device in the near future, or I will be forced to abandon the CameraMator platform and risk bricking it with the Sanho firmware. Essentially it's a brick right now anyway, with such heavily crippled software. As a kickstarter I'm proud to have supported your business, and I want you to succeed. You clearly made a substantial mistake either in understanding the terms of your contract with Sanho, or in managing the fallout from a breach of contract on their part. Either way, you made a mistake. It's time to fess up and make good.

Like I said, I'm a proud supporter, and I still want to believe in and support your business venture. Please give me a clear reason to do so.

I was able to download the update to my distinguished while-it-was-still-free Cameramator app. I had the same issues with the inexplicable desire to assign itself to and several minutes of trying to get my camera to show up. Eventually it did! Except, no live preview, and an unexplained and undocumented, "firmware updated" message. System reboot, a few more minutes of random plugging and unplugging my camera - still no preview, but got it back to working. Then I exited the first mode and immediately re-entered it - and live preview appeared from my D7000!

It appears to be as stable as it was, even if I can't get it to connect to my wifi. I do wonder, though: why was an undocumented and uncommunicated firmware update done? In my more paranoid delusions I have to wonder: can I now no longer switch to the solution from Sanho, or was it the same firmware update with different branding?

This is beginning to feel entirely too operatic to me.

Part of me is glad we really are getting options (I had wondered if Sanho's threat to release their own software was just blowing smoke). But at this point I'm standing pat until the situation becomes clearer. Usman is quickly losing credibility though. Despite promises of the Android app and updated iOS & Mac apps nothing whatsoever has materialized in months and the excuses of app store approval delays are ringing hollow by now.

If nothing else, this has served as a good lesson for me to keep expectations ultra-low when backing Kickstarter projects. Basically these developers promise you the world (unrealistically given their resources) to get your backing and then reality sets in and the finished product ends up a disappointment. Not saying Kickstarter can't sometimes be ultimately a great experience for backers, but it certainly hasn't been in this case.

Ken I agree with you, I don't like that its a one way deal. But the fact that the cameramator app wouldn't even recognize my device and the iUSBport app does ( using existing cameramator with no changes made). I have to wonder why Usman is asking for devices to be returned for repairs when it's clearly only a software/firmware update that needs to be done.
PS when I say that the iUSBport app recognizes my cameramator, it does see the device and allows me to change the network settings but without the firmware change no images are exchanged between the cameramator and the app.
