About this project
Skiing up mountains… with the same joy and excitement of skiing down them. With the UpSki, we make it happen. Come join us!
Our Kickstarter Project:
We have started this project for the production of new instructional demo UpSki equipment, so that we can continue sharing the experience with those who wants to try. With your support we will create new UpSkis for your use! We want to allow more people to share in the experience of UpSki.
An UpSki is a large round chute/sail used for wind powered mountain ascent. With skis or snowboard, we harness the wind for an uphill ride. Powerful enough for exhilarating speed, yet precise and controllable for maneuvering and stopping… the UpSki has been engineered to perfection! The UpSki is designed to keep the user on the ground and deflate/depower instantly for safety.
Weighting only 10 pounds it is packable in a mountaineering rucksack. It can easily be launched or packed in minutes. The UpSki has been designed for use in the backcountry.
BaseJumping/Skydiving/Paragliding/speed flying?? NO… those are different sports focused on flying. UpSkiing is about using the wind to ASCEND mountains… in the same way that skiers descend them – with your feet and skiis(or board) on the ground.
An UpSki Broken Down:
An UpSki package includes:
- Harness: worn by the user to transmit the UpSki's pull to the user. Includes safety release.
- Control Center: clips to the harness and provides steering and power control.
- Lines & Vent System: Joins the control center to the canopy and enables effortless rapid inflation & deflation of the canopy.
- Canopy: 18m^2 of projected sail area
The funds generated through kickstarter will be used to pay for the materials and production costs for the instructional UpSki equipment. For each UpSki this includes >50 yards of fabric,>150 yards of cord, hard goods and more. Our dedicated posse of workers, friends, and volunteers will spend more than 40 hours to produce each UpSki.
All sewing and assembly occurs in our Carbondale, Colorado shop. Hard goods and other specialty items are manufactured or assembled by friends and contractors throughout Colorado and the USA. Base materials such as fabrics predominantly come from mills within the USA.
We are doing our part to create jobs & manufacturing within the USA. And we're proud of it!!
T-Shirts: we weren't going to do it... but have been persuaded: We are getting moisture wicking Poly blend shirts which we love wearing outdoors. We are enlisting local artist Brian Colley for our T-Shirt print design.
UpSki Experience: Yes, just about anyone can do it, but - prior skiing experience and good fitness is preferable.
Equipment: We are hard at work to make sure it will all be built & delivered in time!
Bike Products: Our bike bags have become a huge hit! All are made from strong & rugged nylon 'Ballistic' cloth.
Please Support Us!!
We have long been believers in sharing the UpSki experience. Ascending snow covered mountains powered by the wind is for real!! While many of you have dreamed of such an idea... we have poured our blood, sweat, and thread into making it happen. Help fund this project to build new UpSki equipment allowing you and many others to experience UpSkiing.
Risks and challenges
It takes courage to follow your dreams…
Our sewing shop is setup and machines are specially adjusted for the production of UpSkis. Materials are either here or on-order, and production is in progress. We’ve spent countless hours over many years testing and field testing our design. We’ve tested UpSkis in the harshest conditions, summited large peaks… and our UpSkis perform amazing!! Small batches of UpSkis have been built each of the last few years. We are confident in our product and manufacturing process.
Challenges of participation: We cannot guarantee snow or wind. Spending time outside in winter is celebration enough… when conditions are right UpSkiing is the icing on the cake!
There are dates on the rewards which specify delivery. We started production durning the summer to ensure our work will be complete for the 2013-14 season.
No- we've built and tested many different sizes- and the size we have selected provides the best performance.
No- we have focused our efforts on ski ascent in the backcountry. There are some resorts which allow wind powered activities in bounds- at your local resort you should ask first.
Crowds & collisions- has never been an issue- rarely do we go to crowded places
