What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

BioControle V1.0 is a very good prototype, but I need you to launch the next better revision and the final production !

  BioControle is a powerfull interface connected to a Raspberry-Pi 3, and offers a lot of features to control your aquaponics systems, hydroponics systems, or any other system that need several kinds of IOs.

 I'm Yann Leidwanger, the founder and manager of Upsilon Engineering. I'm 42 years old, with more 20 years background in electronics hardware design and especially PCBs routing.

 I designed more than 400 boards, for industry, medical, automotive, defense, earth RF stations and satellites.

 The project was initially developed for the ThiLab, a FabLab based in Thionville, France, where I discover aquaponics systems, and I thought it was so cool !

 The proof of concept prototype drives one servomotor (fishes food dispenser), one warm power lamp and one temperature sensor (water).

 Afterwards, I wanted to develop a professional board with a lot of features, with extended features, wich protect the Raspberry Pi, with a minimal cost, but not a minimal quality !

 Moreover, the interface can be used for other purposes.

 First, I studied the needs of the users : ONE temperature sensor, ONE humidity sensor, ONE power relay output, ONE servomotor output.

 Secondly, I added more functionalities : logical inputs and outputs, protected power supply input, power supply supervisors, ADC, DAC, RTC, EEPROM, programmable user led, protections for inputs and outputs...

 Thirdly, I improved these initials specifications : double all inputs and outputs, double temperature sensors inputs, double humidity sensors inputs, quadruple relays power outputs, use 12 bit ADC and DAC, protect all signals from and to external devices, double servomotor outputs, add a protection for power supply input, add analog filters on power supplies for ADC and DAC.

 I've chosen components according to all their electrical characteristics, performance, quality, but not price !

 A "minimal cost" doesn't mean "low cost" (and low quality).

 I drew schematics functions one by one, constantly keeping in mind all the constraints :

  • functionalities

  • performance

  • quality

  • availability of IOs on Raspberry Pi

  • cost

  • "next-step design" (PCB layout, components placement, routing, PCB production, components assembly)

 The layout and the routing of the board are very important : it must ensure minimal surface, minimal height, allows acces to CSI and DSI headers, and allow mechanical fixing on Raspberry Pi.

 The PCB is routed according to Class4 rules (0.21mm track width, 0.21mm clearance).

 In order to optimize the costs, I've decided to place components only on TOP layer and standardize components references.

Production
Production

 For PCBs production and components assembly, I use a supplier with whom I have been working for a long time. Quality and quick delivery are always present with this firm.

 Boards are produced by batches of 100 PCBs, again to minimize costs.

 There is no bug on V1.0 revision, all hardware tests and software tests passed.

 Even if this project is immediately functional, with no mistakes, I was not 100% satisfied :

  • the second power supply header is not useful

  • I used an uncommon pinout for servomotors

Full protected user IOs and power supply input

  • protection against reverse polarity

Risks and challenges

Currently, the main risk is the availability of some components, because there is a shortage of some components in the world. However, the design is made to easily found a replacement part. If it must happen, I'll change the reference of concerned components to replace them to minimize production delay.
