Where did you last buy flowers?
In many places, the limited options are disappointing grocery bunches or overpriced arrangements. People have had to accept that design, quality and experience might be sacrificed for convenient or affordable flowers.
Introducing the Florist minus the Fuss!
Uprooted Flower Truck is set to launch April 2015 as the first flower shop on wheels in New York City!
We make the cuts for you! The truck will also offer scheduled deliveries (starting in Manhattan) of the brownstone, a large custom arrangement.
Find Uprooted at the Intersection of Quality, Convenience and Design.
Uprooted Flower Truck will share our daily menu and parking location on social media. We aim to be where and when you need us – whether it’s on the 5pm dash from the office or after a weekend stroll through the Brooklyn flea.
Fresh flowers. Fresh designs.
We pair local flowers with blooms directly from the Dutch auction. That means most of our flowers were cut from the field the day before they hit the truck! Uprooted introduces flower enthusiasts to unexpected blooms or variations on old standbys (even carnations can be surprisingly beautiful!).
Our hand tied bouquets are equipped to travel and gift ready. We focus on efficient service and playful designs to make buying flowers (for your boo or you) a stress-free and fun experience.
Creating the Vision
Kristin and Ashley noticed a gap in the New York floral scene: there is currently no option which provides a good balance of style, price, and quality. Florists are forced to build high NYC rent and waste costs into their prices, which results in higher cost for the customer. The only other options are poor quality flowers and cookie cutter designs.
Ashley worked in urban flower shops and thought about the success of the food truck model, she suggested the idea of a flower truck to her partner Kristin, and we were off! We began intensive research and planning. Lean Startup Machine in NYC chose Ashley's business pitch and assigned a team for market research, business plan development, and ultimately a simulated flower truck launch. The customer feedback was overwhelmingly positive!
Since then, we've been working hard to make this dream a reality. We hosted “flower happy hours” in Washington Square Park – selling bouquets, learning from customers, and developing our business plan.
In January 2015 we purchased a 2006 Ford Step Van which is currently under construction. Uprooted sourced a custom walk in cooler and large serving window, designing a layout for optimal floral care and ability to serve efficiently. The truck will have a floral cooler, electrical system, work counters, sink with hot water – a fully functional florist on wheels!
We’ve invested everything we have in getting our truck prepared for the streets of NYC – now we need your help to give the business a jumpstart! We pooled saved money and took out a loan to purchase the truck and get it outfitted.
Kristin and Ashley have already invested over $50,000 in the business and need $15,000 more to get us on the road, a “kickstart” if you will. Kickstarter is "all or nothing" - if we don't hit our goal, we won't get to keep any pledges! Help us reach 15k and spread flowers across NYC.
We appreciate anything that you can give - even $1! We're offering some sweet positive reinforcement starting at just $10. If only 1,500 New Yorkers bought a single flower, we would be fully funded!
Risks and challenges
One of the biggest challenges Uprooted will face is finding our customers. People buy flowers for particular events but they are also often an “impulse buy.” The problem with impulse buying in NYC is once you've bought something, you have to trek it home over the river and through the streets. Although Uprooted's bouquets are travel ready, we still need to catch people who are headed home or to the event for which they need flowers. So we’ll need your help!! Let us know where you want Uprooted to be! As our business develops, we will need to listen to our clients’ needs and adapt our practices to provide NYC with fresh flowers!
Another major challenge will be balancing how much inventory to keep on the truck. Our generator can run on gas and electricity so that the cooler can be plugged in overnight. This feature will facilitate turnover of product from day to day, but part of Uprooted’s mission is to reduce waste by keeping a smaller inventory on the truck, so determining how much to purchase and when will be tricky. We want to have enough blooms for everyone who stops by the truck, but we also don’t want to be throwing lots of flowers away! Unfortunately, this will be a trial and error process, which is part of the reason we need help with operating costs. Uprooted needs the cushion Kickstarter will provide to allow for experimentation with truck location and inventory management.
Our limited inventory concept is also a risk. We may be alienating customers who are looking for a specific type of flower or have strong color preferences. Uprooted hopes to convert the naysayers by introducing them to new varieties and playful designs. We want people to branch out! Lilies may be your favorite flower, but if Uprooted is on your way to work, you may get dahlias this week and realize you love them on your desk too!
Overall, our biggest challenge is getting the word out so people know New York is getting its first florist on wheels – help us spread the word and put people on the look-out for Uprooted Flower Truck!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
