Greetings, friends.

This is Jeremy of Upholstery. This May, we will be releasing our fourth full-length album INGA and we would be honored and humbled to have your support in this endeavor.

First, a little bit about us - Upholstery is a music collective based in West Philadelphia that makes original music for stage, film, and stereos. We've been churning out our particular style of dark experimental rock since 2007. Drawing from a wide range of musical influences - from Tom Waits to King Crimson, cabaret to post-punk - we aim to create music that is both visceral and thought-provoking.

When not on stage, we can be found in the orchestra pit composing and performing original scores for theater. We have worked with our sister company Transmissions Theatre on every one of their productions, including Jug-Baby, A Porch at the Edge of the World, and Water Bears in Space. We are also the minds behind the bilingual drag cabaret, ‘The Señor Papos Show’.

INGA is our fourth full-length album and our twelfth release to date (you can check out our entire discography on our bandcamp page). After a decade of releasing music independently, this will be our first album released on a legit record label! Exotic Fever Records has been releasing music for nearly twenty years and we are so excited and grateful that they have chosen to release this work.

We are really proud of this thing. It’s dark. It’s hypnotic. It’s an expansive work that reveals more of its secrets with each listen. The amount of love and energy that the artists poured into the project really shows. From the lush string parts to the blistering horns, every individual voice helps elevate the music as a whole.

The album also features a lengthy roster of guest players from Philly’s vibrant music scene. Members of Hardwork Movement, Trap Rabbit, Settled Arrows, Hermit High Priestess, Pattern is Movement, and West Philadelphia Orchestra all lent their talents to make this our best record to date. And the amazing producer and beat-maker Johann Sebastian helped take the music to a whole new level sonically.

This is the first time we’re turning to the crowdfunding approach, primarily because we want as many people as possible to experience this project. We’re putting more money than ever before into the studio time, CD manufacturing, merchandise, promotion, and distribution. We are confident that all of this extra effort will result in expanding our fanbase and providing us with new opportunities for us to share our music.

But as you all know, investing in these endeavors costs a lot of cold, hard ca$h. That's why we’re asking for your help.

More than anything, we hope campaign is a way for our friends and fans to pre-order to the album. $25 will get you a copy of the CD along with that warm fuzzy feeling of knowing you helped some artists achieve their dream. For anyone feeling more generous, we’ve got some special expressions of gratitude to offer. (Please see the Rewards section for more details).

And if you’re not able to support this project financially, we ask that you please share this with your social circles. Every person we reach with the campaign increases our chances of reaching our goal. And we hope you’ll come out in May to help us celebrate the release! We’ll be in New York on May 10th and Philly on May 15th.

Thank you so very much for your consideration and we look forward to getting this music out into the world and into your ears.

Our deepest gratitude,

Jeremy & Upholstery

INGA features:

Cost Breakdown of the Campaign:

  • Studio Time: $2,500
  • Mastering: $500
  • CD Manufacturing: $1,000
  • Photography and Videography: $1,000
  • Marketing and Promotion: $2,000
  • Music Videos: $1,500
  • Merchandise: $500
  • Kickstarter Fees: $1,000

For the mathematically astute, you may notice that this breakdown amounts to a total of $10,000. This is actually how much we estimate the entire project will cost when all is said and done. But since Kickstarter uses the ‘all or nothing’ approach to fundraising, we felt it would be wiser to shoot for the lower end of our fundraising goal. And if we reach our goal before the deadline, we’ll make a final push to hit the grand total.

Risks and challenges

The biggest risk for us is not attaining our set goal and forfeiting the crowd-sourced support. We have tried to mitigate this risk by setting our financial goal lower than the actual total cost of the project. We hope that we will be able to meet our target of $8,500 with your support and possibly get close to our total goal of $10,000 if the crowdfunding fates deem us worthy. But either way, we are really proud of this music and are confident our fans will enjoy it, as well. So if we’re unable to meet our goal with this campaign, we will still work to get this music out into the world by other means.
