[Edit 2-14: the tell-me-what-to-cover pledge # was reduced to 11 because someone backed out after the song list was final and I can't have someone pledging for something they won't get! Also, there's a backer-only update with my cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart"]
[The below: a rough draft of Ladytron's "Destroy Everything You Touch" just added 1/31/2013! Also just added 1/23: ongoing stretch goal of bonus tracks, one for each $1,000 we get to over $8,000.]
Hello dear music lovers!
It's time I recorded all these new loop-based covers I've been playing live so people can listen to them (and buy them at shows!) Uncovered Volume 1 CDs are already sold out, so it'll be great to have brand new covers albums for sale! Here's The Knife's Heartbeats live on electric cello in Detroit:
I'm doing something different for this album than I've done for a full-length album before -- limiting my palette. The rules are, just cello and voice, all songs based on layering loops. (My loop pedal is the simplest kind and I've adapted to playing live this way, so if I can play most of a song without changing the core loop or undoing any loops, it qualifies for the album.)
As of project launch, I have a lot of songs in the "Maybe" list. [EDIT: the rest of this paragraph no longer applies because the $100 rewards are sold out.] YOU, dear Unwomanizer, have the power to put 12 into the "Yes" list, with a pledge of just $100. I *may* consider an alternate cover song for your pledge, but it has to have the same or nearly the same chord progression in the verses and the chorus, and I have to love it. Please write me before pledging at that level if the song you want to request isn't on that list (firstname.lastname@example.org)

What I need the money for:
Mostly, covers licensing. This will cost me about $3,500 total.
Although I'm doing all the engineering and production myself as always, which saves a lot of money, I have to upgrade some equipment and buy a sister for the mic I've been using so I can record cello in stereo (I had borrowed a mic pair from a friend for Uncovered.) That totals about $900 (assuming everything else holds up.)
Then there is the pressing. The packaging for this album, I've decided, will be extremely simple: black ink on cardboard sleeves. There are a lot of reasons for this -- I think they'll be attractive, have minimum waste, I'll be able to carry more with me when I travel (I fly to most of my gigs), and they'll be cheaper and easier to produce so I can put more work and effort into the creative and promotion aspects. The CD pressing & freight will cost about $1100.
I am also looking into a new style of USB drives for this release, from a different manufacturer than the last batch. They'll be modern, shiny, and gorgeous, and rather expensive to order (I'm not sure yet the number.)
I'm asking for $6,000, which is less than what this all will total, because I always sell the USBs so those are an investment I'd make regardless of this album.
Some of the rewards include posters or records from my recent original album, The Fires I Started -- if you missed out on the vinyl for that, you can get it here for a discount with the Lemniscate CD! It's pretty.
Things I'll be including in backer updates: work-in-progress songs, T-shirt designs...
Thank you in advance for your support!
Risks and challenges
I have successfully funded, completed, and delivered six Kickstarter projects. I have never missed a deadline for an album download to be ready.
Occasionally physical rewards are delayed (eg TFIS vinyl), have problems (eg dark metal USB, before I got them fixed), or are lost in the mail then replaced by me as quickly as possible. And occasionally songpoem rewards take longer to deliver than anticipated -- because they require inspiration. The Beautiful Fish DVD was a few months late because the person I'd hired to edit it was not able to do so.
I have done my best to communicate with backers when delays or problems have occurred in the past and will continue to do so, but hope it won't be necessary for this project. Since I won't be producing anything new to me except t-shirts, and I will order those nice and early, it should be fine.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
