About

Zine Synopsis

Zine is short for magazine and are little booklets in which RPG creators poured their energy and homebrew content into to present it to the world. Back before the internet was a wonderful means of communicating to the masses these were small voices showing off their own additions to RPGs and settings without having the restrictions or reliance on traditional publishing and marketing.

Our Zine is specifically about world building in the tabletop Roleplaying Game (RPG) space, focusing on the variety of parts and components that can make up a setting with various examples for the reader to use at their leisure. Our goal is to give the reader ideas and spur their imagination for their own creations, not to necessarily give them a prefabricated product. Each Zine will have a unique theme based either on a geological type or a creative idea that will be feature throughout (This issue's theme is Swamp). To that end there will be various parts from various artists and authors presented in the Zine with diverse views from a variety of people and places.

Who am I? I'm Barantor and I've been creating worlds, looking at maps and imagining cultures since I was a young boy. The Zinequest campaign inspired me to put forth some of those ideas for others and finally see some of my dreams become reality. It also allows me to showcase some of my friends writing and how we all see things through different lenses.  I am also a stay-at-home dad to two awesome kids and an equally awesome wife who have been very supportive in this endeavor.

What will this Zine include?

  • Art from two great artists
  • NPCs from a small setting of my own design
  • The Creature of the Zine!, with several descriptions by different authors
  • Short Stories of fantasy worlds
  • Suggestions of tools useful for building your own worlds
  • Links to the artists and authors in the zine

Creature of the Zine!, is a project that will be included in this issue and any further issues. An artist is given the theme word with the freedom to create a creature with their interpretation and ideas on what encapsulates that theme. That image is then distributed to a few authors who write their ideas on the creature’s goals, habits and lifestyle. We then gather them up and publish to the Zine in order to compare and contrast how different authors can create ideas based on the same imagery.

What about stretch goals?

I’ve kept the stretch goals modest with this first Zine, but that does not mean there will not be any! With further goals reached the Zine will increase in size (up to a point!) to give the reader more content. I am dedicated to giving authors and artists payment that is fair for their work and value all their contributions, no matter how small.

Risks and challenges

This is my first Kickstarter and I understand the risks of failing to meet goals and the tribulations of logistics of a physical product. I am limiting the physical product to the United States, but those living in other countries may purchase the zine in PDF format. This will hopefully change with future zines, but I ere on the side of caution for this first attempt.

Life is fickle and if there are any delays in any delivery of product I will let backers know as soon as is possible.
