We are happy to share the news that we’ve secured a space for UnionDocs for another 10 years. 322 Union Avenue is the three-story building in central Williamsburg, Brooklyn that we’ve occupied since our grassroots start. It is an easily accessible location that supports our current activities and offers much potential for our future plans.
We’ve invested a lot of time, effort and expense in the building and it has been an excellent resource for us, but our activities have significantly ramped up in the past two years. We are launching this campaign now to raise $12,000 to make improvements to the space. We will make significant changes that will allow the space to function better for all the multiple purposes it serves.
We have completed our first year of an expansive interactive documentary project called "Looking at Los Sures" which will focus on the immediate neighborhood that we are part of and include the work of 36 fellows in our collaborative program over 3 years. This long-term lease is great news for the project and a sign of our general commitment to make an impact locally for another decade and beyond. We feel especially fortunate, because as rents have skyrocketed in our area, we’ve seen many peer organizations loose their spaces.
Here's a sample of some our incentives to encourage you to help out.
We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit and a portion of your contribution is tax-deductible!
So, what do we want to do? It’s basic, but important stuff.
- Add signage and lights to the storefront.
- Rework our entrance and box office, so bigger audiences have an easier time coming inside.
- Build a better concession and a bar.
- Upgrade seating, with super comfortable chairs that can be set up quickly and stored simply.
- Construct a retractable tiered platforms (raked seating) to improve views.
- Add a new bathroom and make the old bathroom handicap accessible.
We have carpentry and building skills and a DIY approach, but for a number of these improvements we will require specialists.
With your help we can start 2012 with a more functional, effective and comfortable venue, a Center for Documentary Art, that will serve your community for the next 10 years.

UnionDocs (UnDo) is a Center for Documentary Art that generates and shares big ideas. We bring together a diverse community of experimental media-makers, dedicated journalists, critical thinkers, and local partners on a search for urgent expressions of the human experience, practical perspectives on the world today, and compelling visions for the future.
We find powerful, thought-provoking works of non-fiction (film, video, sound, photography, oral history, printed word, and performance) and present over one hundred public events each year, attracting people from across and beyond New York City. Whether celebrating the discipline and artistry or sharing counterpoint and honest critique, audiences at our intimate UnDo Center are encouraged to join in open discussions with the director, creator, or producer of the work, who is always in the room.UnionDocs Produces. In designing collaborative projects, we bring together 20th Century documentary practice and contemporary networked culture. What opportunities do new technologies offer non-fiction? When is mastering age-old techniques the best route? We experiment with these questions and share our learning through the UnDo Collaborative Studio, a one year fellowships program that seeks to bring together individual talents, voices, and stories and create multi-dimensional documentaries.
UnionDocs Publishes. We believe in freely sharing ideas. For a growing international audience online, we publish critical writing, interviews, artist videos, documented panels, audience discussions, as well as the research from our collaborative productions. Through our website, we hope to share the ideas brewing at our space with the widest possible audience.
So, what is a big idea?
It is no mistake that our name abbreviates to UnDo Center. We promote marginalized stories, under-represented facts, and interdependent networks. UnionDocs believes that documentary art, when paired with thoughtful context and open debate, is an invaluable tool for understanding the complexities of contemporary life and creating a more compassionate, engaged, and integrated society.
