About this project
Arcade County is a massively multiplayer experience that emulates the gaming industry.
The goal is to develop a system where would-be game designers can quickly and easily create great games and get them into virtual arcades for players to experience. Regardless of their platform, they'll be able to create, share, and dominate.
It starts with the Arcade County Creation Kit. This allows you to make arcade style games in no time using powerful creation tools.
Once you've built your title, you can then publish it to a gaming store where virtual arcade owners can purchase them and start bringing in players. This is all done through a virtual currency - no real money ever changes hands. Players then pull up the world map and find an arcade to play in. They'll be able to walk around and socialize as if they were in a real arcade, even down to putting those virtual tokens into a machine to play.
It's all tracked. You'll know how many people played your game down to the minute. You'll know how many arcades bought your game. You'll know who's the got the highest score. You'll even know what people think about your game because there's a review system where players can open their own media outlets on the globe just as a real gaming website would. They can upload screenshots, capture videos, and earn reputation points and tokens if gamers take their reviews to heart.
All of the games are free. The entire system runs on a virtual currency. Although the games are free inside Arcade County, you will be able to develop stand alone titles as well that do not need to run through Arcade County. All of my previous games - including the entire First Star Online series of MMO, will have the source code available so you can create your own MMO's using the advanced Arcade County development kit.
Below is a clip of Soon Serenade, an online game which will be available through Arcade County on launch:
Each game can have up to 10 achievements that players can unlock, and you get to set the name, icon, and description of each - regardless of whether you use the Arcade Development Kit or the Advanced Development Kit.
Creating games will never be easier. Just take a look at the following videos which show off the graphics/background editor and creating music in Arcade County:
Anyone can make great games without any development experience whatsoever. However, experienced developers will get access to a wealth of tools and source code to build more powerful online games and placing them inside the world of Arcade County.
Once your game is complete you build a custom arcade cabinet from several designs, hundreds of color schemes, control layouts, and side/banner graphics (all of which can be completely edited!)
Arcade County is a social MMO unlike anything that's ever been attempted. The reason for this kickstarter.com page is to raise the funds necessary to build the server technology to handle this system. We need to be able to distribute files securely so that nothing is stolen, and we need to be able to handle thousands of players and developers all across a single network.
This is for people who love gaming, but are fed up with publishers giving them so little for so much money. It's for people who want to make their own games but are tired of spending tireless hours only to have their project ignored by the greedy media who only care about you if you advertise on their site.
This isn't about joining the gaming industry - it's about creating an entirely new one.
