About

Backstory

Since childhood, my curiosity with the paranormal and unsolved mysteries has grown. I can remember asking for money from my parents or using my own dollars and coins to purchase paperback ghost story books at the school book fairs. Ghost stories always seemed to capture a moment in history, add a dash of tragedy, and then stretch that story into the present day with ordinary people experiencing the extraordinary. This foundation along with my love for history would give birth to the "Unexplained" series.

Around Halloween in 2000, WJTV-12 of Jackson, Mississippi, produced what every local broadcast television news station did at that time - local ghost stories. A series of stories entitled "Ghost Hunts" aired the week of Halloween. As New Media Director at the time, I recognized the importance of sharing online additional details, images, and videos of a broadcast story to go beyond what aired during a newscast.

What if we didn't just do these stories in October or around Halloween? What if we did one every month? The thought was to find more stories - hauntings, UFOs, cold cases, anything with a hint of mystery - and fully research the history of the structure, people and anything surrounding the story. Instead of trying to scramble and rush the story for air in a day or two, weeks were spent researching and compiling details including images, documents, and interviews with key people.

Most broadcast news stories are 90 seconds or less. "Unexplained" had the flexibility to go up to 5 minutes but even that duration still constrained sharing all the intricacies of some of our stories. So, the additional footage, images, and "field reports" became great web content.

"Unexplained" matured into an amazing collaboration between the news, marketing, online, and sales departments. On Halloween nights of 2001, 2002, and 2003 our efforts were highlighted in half-hour specials entitled "Unexplained: Haunts." The first two were a combination of news stories featured throughout the year. The special in 2003 was unique as it was a history overview and paranormal investigation of Lloyd Hall plantation in Louisiana.

  • "Unexplained: Haunts" received a Southeast Regional Emmy for Outstanding Entertainment Program from the Atlanta Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
  • "Unexplained" the franchise received two Mississippi Associated Press awards, the first in 2000 for Best Feature and the next in 2001 for Best Franchise.
  • "Unexplained: Haunts II" received a Gold Award for Informational Program and Best of Show from the Mississippi Association of Broadcasters.
  • "Unexplained: Haunts III - The Anatomy of a Ghost Hunt" received a Gold Award while the franchise received a Silver award from the Mississippi Association of Broadcasters in 2004.

And now I need your help.

Using the same passions, love of history, tenacity for finding unique stories, and braving whatever and where the story takes the team - I want to bring "Unexplained" back better than ever! Best of all, many of the same names and faces will be returning - including our original host, Darren Dedo!

Instead of a program made for a broadcast news station - these episodes will be made for YouTube and available on that channel.

Instead of stories only from Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana - we'll explore stories across the country and perhaps the world!

Put another way, I'd like to build a paranormal network of a sorts with correspondents and reporters collecting research, interviews, and video and turning those into amazing stories.

But to do this best, it has to be done right! This means acquiring the proper equipment and working with the best people. It will require a considerable amount of time and money. The end result will be the kind of quality many came to expect and appreciate from our team.

Please consider pledging your support and sharing this campaign. Help us continue the search for the unexplained!

Risks and challenges

The first risk has always been not taking this risk. For years, the team has talked about "getting the gang back together" but life and not being intentional has always prevented the idea from progressing.

However, the most obvious risk is not completing this campaign. If the goal is not met, no money comes our way and we would not be able to proceed.

Beyond that, other potential risks are standard to most productions of this type: equipment capturing enough usable footage and audio, editing being completed in a timely matter, resources being available as scheduled, etc. Much of this may require getting into a rhythm. This is why the first season of many programs are bit awkward as personnel are getting accustomed to producing their product. The difference here is that the topics and people are known, however, producing the content hasn't happened since 2004.
