Hooray! Thank you to all who have backed my project and for all your love and support. Thanks to you, this project is a GO! Woo-hoo! Here are some of the extras that have been added to the project during this campaign:
- Pledge $15 or more and be drawn into a group portrait of my supporters.
- I'm now adding 15% NEW never-before-released comics to my project. This means ONLY backers will see these new comics.
Thank you again for your support. I am so grateful for all of you!
Comics that unearth the world of science.
Hi my name is Sara and I’m the creator of Unearthed Comics. Unearthed Comics is a webcomic that features relationship, business, science, environmental, parenting and health humor. It is often curated by my anthropomorphic Marilyn Earth and is regularly doused in double-entendres and puns.
I’ve been publishing Unearthed Comics online and self-published my first compilation of comics in June 2013. Now it’s time to celebrate the scientist in us all with a special compilation of science and semi-related comics.
Unearthed Comics: Unearthing Science will be a full color, 8.5” x 8.5” paperback book of 76 pages featuring Unearthed Comics’ astronomy, geology, paleontology, biology, meteorology, and other science-related comics. The book will include the popular “Scientist Vacations,” “Narcissistic Sun,” and “T-Rex’s Ride” comics that were featured on Scientific American’s blog and IFLScience on Facebook, as well as many NEW science comics. As a backer, you will get the opportunity to receive your own signed copy of Unearthed Comics: Unearthing Science and other Unearthed Comics’ rewards.
Though Unearthed Comics: Unearthing Science will make a perfect gift for science students, professors, and working scientists, most people with a basic understanding of the world around us are likely to find humor in the book.
There are pledge levels of all shapes and sizes for students, friends, lab assistants, and more. As a backer, in addition to Unearthed Comics: Unearthing Science, you can receive some Marilyn Earth decals, a signed print or large poster of “Scientist Vacations” and your own 6” x 6” “Science Proves the World Goes Round” decals.
Here are some super-special options:
- Science fanatics: You’ll have the opportunity to get your own portrait drawn with my famous Marilyn Earth in the setting of your choice and a signed print.
- Gift-givers: The holidays are approaching so be sure to explore pledge levels with gift-giving options for your science-loving friend, family-member, colleague, or professor in mind.
- Webcomic colleagues: What better way to back my project than to also get the opportunity to have your own comic in my book and on my website? You can piggyback on my success as I promote my book and my website.
- Business owners: You have some custom options to get that idea of yours created into a comic just for you, which you can also use for your marketing purposes.
Remember, the project and associated rewards will not happen unless the main goal of $4,000 is reached. Pledges will only be deducted at the end of the Kickstarter campaign once the main goal is reached (which means your payment will not come out until Oct 31st).
The funds raised from my Kickstarter campaign will go into art supplies for drawing the comics for my book, Kickstarter fees, Amazon’s publishing fees, costs of prizes, costs and time associated with adding supporters to my website, shipping costs for prizes, and for some of my time so I can pull away from my day job and still eat while completing the book :).
Thanks in advance for all of your help and support!!!
Risks and challenges
Though risks exist, I don’t foresee any large challenges with completing my project and am VERY excited to create these comics for you.
I am a graphic/web designer by day so am familiar with the ins and outs of what needs to be done to get the book published, rewards created, and extras implemented on the website. I have already created and published my first book of Unearthed Comics that will have the same specs as "Unearthed Comics: Unearthing Science," so I am well-familiar with the process and the quality of the final product. (Once the comics were created for my last book, it took me only 2 weeks to get the final book off to Amazon and for me to receive my first proof- yay!).
However, just to reassure you, here's a breakdown of my plan: In order to meet the holiday deadlines, I will be working on some of the comics for the book throughout the campaign and will create the remaining comics and book layout the first week of November once the goal is met. I will be sending off prizes to be printed that same time with a 1 week shipping turnaround (the print and decals are currently ready to go). This will allow 2-3 weeks just in case there are any delays.
Books and prizes are planned to be sent to backers by the first week of December 2013. Custom illustrations and comics will be fulfilled by February 2014 and the deadline with a customized website design and development will depend on the client. Stretch goal prizes to be sent off to backers will be delivered no later than Feb 2014.
