UNDO Labs is a New York and Istanbul-based design and innovation studio that rethinks our environmental relationship with man-made products. We do this by redesigning simple products in an innovative way and offering a carbon offset mechanism through which users of our products can "undo" the environmental damage created by some of the items they use. More on this mechanism below.
Our first such product is UNDO Laces, an innovative take on the plain old shoelace.
Why a shoelace as our first product? The shoe is one of the most environmentally damaging items we wear due the raw materials used and intensity of manufacturing processes. According to an MIT study, a typical shoe has a carbon footprint of 30 pounds of CO2. 25 billion shoes are sold in the world per year - the carbon footprint of the global shoe industry is close to that of the entire country of Italy! So we created our first product to undo the damage of the shoe industry.
Here's how it works: You buy a pair of undo laces, UNDO Labs offsets the carbon footprint of a pair of shoes by purchasing carbon offset credits from a wind energy, solar energy or reforestation project on your behalf. We do this by going through 3rd party carbon offset vendors. If everyone in the world had an UNDO Lace for every shoe they owned, the carbon footprint of the entire shoe industry would be offset!

We did not only want to create a product that’s good for the world, but also wanted it to make an aesthetic statement and offer functional innovation in a simple product such as a shoelace.
What's the pain point in changing your shoelaces? Taking the old ones off and putting the new ones on. Same with us. With mini magnets installed in both ends of the shoelace and an easy mechanical twist, we designed a product that’s easy to replace and practical to use.
Here’s how you replace an UNDO Lace with another UNDO Lace: You simply take the old one off, the new will be automatically in. Don't believe it? Here's a short video on it:
With numerous colors and styles available, you can give your shoes a new look every time you change your UNDO Laces.
Closing the loop refers to making any process sustainable; hence the UNDO Lace enables you to close the loop; it’s a visual manifestation of our purpose. With its unique look, the UNDO Lace enables you to share your commitment to making the world a better place.
We’ve been working on our first product over the past 6 months. We went through multiple stages of prototyping until we've come to the product that we are finally launching.
Thanks to our manufacturing partner Kord, we were able to manufacture the first batch of our product and test it with hundreds of users for feedback. We discovered new use cases of our product and new product ideas which we will be developing in the upcoming months. Below is a short video on our manufacturing partner for the UNDO Laces.
We've already completed the final prototypes and had a first, small badge of the product manufactured. We started distributing it at design shows such as the NYC Design Junction or Wanted Design in NYC. We received amazing support and encouragement about the environmental story as well as the product and are humbled by the excitement of our early users. Our goal with this campaign is to raise enough capital to start distributing our product to more like-minded people around the globe!
Thanks for supporting us...and helping us make a difference in the world, one shoe at a time.
Risks and challenges
Honestly, we do not anticipate any major hiccups. Unless we receive an overwhelming number of orders, we will deliver undo laces to our backers on time. Though it would be a fun problem to have:)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
