The Story Behind UnderRepped
A few months ago my dad and I were walking down the street and started commenting on who we saw on people's shirts. It blew us away that the same faces kept reappearing. We repeatedly saw the faces and names of top athletes, actors, and celebrities. While those individuals are important, we wanted to see someone new. And the idea behind UnderRepped was born.
Since we are both involved with medicine, we searched for a shirt that represented someone in the medical field but never saw one. We easily came up with a list of 10 scientists/inventors/doctors we wanted to represent on a shirt because they have made major contributions to the world. We thought it'd be so cool for people interested in science to get the chance to recognize someone they admire in their field and recognize their legacy. And then we realized that anyone with an interest has someone they could represent. Whether it is in science, the arts, music, or whatever...Who invented the electric guitar? Or stethoscope? Or the electrical components in your iPhone? What about the creators behind the camera? All these great inventions and ideas came from people, and I wanted to start a project that revolved around recognizing them. We've chosen to do just that by making high quality shirts. So, who will you represent?
The Design Process
My project will focus on bringing my first 5 individuals
- Adolph Rickenbacker - inventor of amplifiable electric guitar
- Rene Laennec - inventor of stethoscope
- Roald Amundsen - discovered South Pole & led 1st voyage to North Pole
- Victoria Woodhull - first woman to run for US presidency
- Nikola Tesla - scientist who created alternating current
from prototype to production. I made my first UnderRepped concept 6 months ago and then continually revisited my vision until I ended with a design I was happy with. From there, I've closely worked with screen printers in Camden, NJ to take my graphic design from paper to fabric. Finally, I'm proud to display my prototype as seen in the video for my project. I decided to print on 100% cotton shirts and used the discharge screen printing process. The t-shirts most people are used to are made by putting ink onto the shirt (plastisol) and over time the image can crack and peel. We wanted to avoid this. The discharge process lifts dye from the shirt leaving you with an image that is literally part of the fabric. All of these decisions have come together to make a high quality shirt that looks great! I'm really excited to continue working on this project and see what it can become.

Who To Represent?
It was incredibly difficult to choose who first to represent in our debut line. While I see an endless list of individuals to represent in the future, I needed to start somewhere. I discussed it with family and friends and decided to focus on people in fields I enjoyed the most. Music has been a massive part of my life and that led to Adolph Rickenbacker, one of the pioneers in creating the electric guitar, to be our first person to represent. Since I'm in med school I wanted someone who has contributed to medicine. Rene Laennec's invention, the stethoscope, is vital to the millions of doctor's visits that occur each and every day. Who better than that. When I explained my project to friends, every person had a different suggestion for someone they admired and wanted to see represented. For that reason, my last two people come from friends' ideas: Roald Amundsen, who discovered the South Pole and led the first (undisputed) expedition to the North Pole, and Victoria Woodhull, who was the first woman to run for US presidency and was a major leader in the women’s suffrage movement. Lastly, Nikola Tesla was added after the first week of the campaign from inquiries from our backers. We're really pleased to have our backers already so involved with our project and think the Tesla shirt was a highly desired addition to the collection. I wanted to choose a wide range of categories (music, medicine, exploration, science, social movement) to start from and while it was very tough to choose the first 5 people, there's no limit to how many more people to represent!
I thought Kickstarter would be the perfect place for my project to move forward. I have created and reworked my design for the shirts and I am ready to take things to the next level: full-scale production. I have just made some prototype shirts as seen in my video but want to turn my other designs into a finished product. If the campaign is successful, I hope to add more designs and figures to the line and continue representing more great individuals. I will use the funds to support the production process and plan to have all pledges out by May.

Risks and challenges
I'm a medical student and school demands come first. I foresee coordinating production around my school requirements to be the greatest challenge I'll face after the campaign. Fortunately, I have been able to arrange my school schedule so once the campaign ends I will have more free time to fulfill the pledges. I have laid the major groundwork for how I'm going to fulfill my pledges and built a great team to work with. I did my best to be realistic about pledge timelines and believe that May is a very possible goal for having all the shirts fully produced and sent out. Being in medical school poses my greatest challenge, but my training has also taught me to be disciplined and thoughtful in all my projects whether school related or not. Those skills definitely will allow me to follow through on this project, especially since it's something I truly love.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
