Learning the alphabet can be pretty challenging for a child who thinks in more than one language. I witnessed my own bilingual daughter struggling and so I created this alphabet to keep her language experience fun and effortless.
This is Anna. A curious little linguist who likes to figure things out for herself:
But one thing Anna just can't seem to figure out is the alphabet! She just can't grasp which letter is which-they seem to change continuously! Mum says 'U for umbrella' but Papa says 'P pour parapluie'!
It is time we solve this problem for her, and all the other little linguists out there!
The Little Linguist's Alphabet is a multilingual alphabet that has 26 objects that all start with the same letter in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Dutch. Now D is always for Dinosaur no matter which language Anna is thinking in! Now she can finally grasp which letter is which and can build on that knowledge.
This alphabet is just perfect for mixed language families and classrooms as children can now identify the letters easily no matter which of these languages they are thinking in. It gives little linguists a chance to figure things out for themselves.
I believe this alphabet can help maintain a positive attitude to language and keep little linguists loving and speaking their languages!
The 26 objects are a lovely mix of interesting objects that any little global citizen will love to learn about. All the words have been checked by native speakers of each language. Original illustrations by Gabrijela Sklepić, in a cute and realistic style, make this alphabet really special and just perfect for any home, school or library.
As the alphabet works in any of these languages, monolingual and bi/multilingual children can all learn side by side as it all just works!
A little more about the REWARDS:
THE POSTER - The Little Linguist's Alphabet as a beautiful 50x70 cm (standard size B2) print on high quality paper (ca. 250 gsm). Just perfect on the wall of any house/school/library/cafe frequented by children speaking any one (or all!) of these languages. Now your little linguist can take a closer look whenever they feel like it. All the words in all 6 languages are color-coded and printed around the edge to help the adults out!
THE E-BOOK - The Little Linguist's Alphabet in e-book format with AUDIO. Each e-page will show a letter and matching image with audio for each of the 6 languages to aid with pronunciation. Now your little linguist can be immersed in any of their languages. Very useful for parents who are not proficient in the language the child is learning. The book will be available in ePub3, KF8 and Nook Kids.
THE MINI-ALPHABET - The Little Linguist's Alphabet in a handy A5 size. Perfect on the table next to your little linguist as they learn their letters! A special thank you message for supporting this Kickstarter project will be printed on the reverse. Printed on 350 gsm card.
THE PRINTABLES - Endless fun with coloring-in sheets and cut-out alphabet dominos! A downloadable pdf-file comprising 26 pages showing Black and White images with each letter (the school kit will have editable text-I know how important font is!) along with cut-out alphabet dominos (in color). Print as many as you like!
The funds raised for this project will go towards:
- Printing the posters
- Order fulfillment costs
- Book layout design and conversion to e-book
- Audio for the e-book
- ISBN & registration fees
- Kickstarter & transaction fees
All I need now is enough orders to make this project viable! Thank you so much for your support!
Most rewards are available for shipping worldwide. I plan to print in more than one location (probably Australia, Europe and/or USA) so we can keep shipping and carbon footprint to a minimum. Posters will be rolled and sent in cardboard mailing tubes.
Future Clever Things:
My head is just full of ideas for Anna and the alphabet-here are just a few:
- More languages! I want to continue the search for more versions of The Little Linguist's Alphabet with more languages! I am already working on an Italian version...please check www.loveyourlingo.com for updates
- A book about Anna (not the alphabet...something entirely different!)-I have already written it and Gabrijela Sklepić has agreed to illustrate it! It's not a regular bilingual book...it's a little bit special-you'll have to wait and see!
- Real alphabet dominos! Great for when children already know their letters and need a bit of a challenge!
- An interactive app with all the bells and whistles!
An enormous thank you to Gabrijela Sklepić whose adorable illustrations have made this alphabet really special!
A special thank you to all the native speakers who checked countless words for me!
And of course, thank you to all my family and friends who have listened to a grown-up talk about an alphabet far more than any grown-up should!
Risks and challenges
Printing the poster:
The poster design is almost ready to go...just a few more edits. I have already researched some printing options, but will have to wait until the campaign is over to actually choose where to print. Production itself should be pretty straightforward as the poster is a standard size. I already have a beautiful sample poster hanging on my wall (which has been well-tested by my daughter!) so I know for sure it will all work out!
Shipping the poster:
I will use a 3rd party order fulfillment service for most of the orders. This professional service should ensure a smooth process.
This is my first e-book, so there will be some learning to do, but I have already identified an e-book publisher who will guide me through the process. They will convert the files and create the final product with audio, so it will be in safe, professional hands. It will take some time to finish the design and record all the audio in 6 languages, but besides that, I am expecting the process to be very straightforward.

All 26 objects of Little Linguist's Alphabet work for European Portuguese. The only object that may not be the best for Brazilian Portuguese is C=campismo for camping, which I am told is not commonly used in Brazil. I am still deciding on final edits though, so please do let me know if you think of a better object for 'C' which works in all 6 languages!
I want this to be as good as it can be so everything will be triple-checked before production. One change I am aware of at this moment is that F=fruit=frucht is not quite right for German so I will be changing F to something else (I have 3 more options to choose from).
