About

In an alternate universe, an alien species has reached the earth. Without a natural predator, the extraterrestrial fungus called N225 could have been catastrophic for the planet's ecosystem. Fortunately, the government acted on time. They isolated the alien life form and entrusted their study to one of the most powerful companies in the world.

SIRCOM, the main investor in the field of military technology, studied the composition and characteristics of N225 for years . Over time, they discovered surprising properties that would open countless doors for modern science. Eight years later, several army units were sent to assess and provide medical support to a nation fallen victim to an influenza epidemic. What the military did not know is that the mission was, in fact, the first human experiment with N225 and that they, far from being in command, were nothing more than guinea pigs.

Thus begins the Umbra Protocol, with a protagonist surrounded by conflicts, both external and internal, in which he is forced to take part. The story before, during and after the game has hundreds of pages, but this is not a JRPG, so we have chosen to show it in a more subtle way. It is the player who decides whether to explore and discover the plots that hide behind the chaos of the battle, either finding an old diary or a photo, without forcing the player to go through endless lines of dialogue.

We have based the way of telling our story in games in the style of dark souls. There is a long sotry, but it is the player who decides if he wants to discover it or if he prefers to focus more on other aspects of the game.

The essence of Umbra Protocol is that of a classic 2D platform game, but I think its true potential lies in its concept of freedom.

The game will contain optional paths that will lead the player to discover side quests, clues about the lore, secret enemies and exclusive loot. I focus on this idea, as I think it's the main difference between Umbra Protocol and a conventional 2D platform game.

I also have to say that because of this, there are hardly any puzzles in the game or other classic platform games mechanics. I am a fan of puzzle games, of levers systems, but those mechanics directly oppose the flowing trend of Umbra Protocol. Games like Borderlands, Skyrim or Fallout, where exploring the "hidden" part of the game is as interesting as the main plot, are what inspired me when creating Umbra Protocol. Umbra Protocol is a non-linear 2D platform game with a closed story and customizable single player options.

Umbra Protocol is a non-linear 2D platform game with a closed story and customizable single player options.

As for gameplay, I've tried to focus on three fundamental things: 1. Fluidity - the game is designed to play with keyboard and mouse because of the fluidity of this configuration, the combats pretend to be fluid, chaining blows, switching between remote weapon and melee with the mouse wheel during the combo, at the same time you dodge enemy attacks.

2. Customization - Umbra [the protagonist] has different weapons equipped with unique properties, so that the player can adapt the combat to his play style.

3. Randomness - Each time the character enters a scene, different enemies will appear in different positions to keep the levels from being predictable.

But not only that, many enemies will have a low percentage of dropping certain special items, such as pets or aspects among others.

The artificial intelligence of the enemy also has random values, so the attacks will not always be in the same time interval, nor at the same distance, nor even equal! For example, an enemy that fires a blaster can shoot three bullets in a row one time and shoot only once the next time.

I have based the combat system on many different titles, especially the Megaman Saga of Zero for Game Boy Advance and Dust: An Elysian Tail. Another important aspect is the existence of helpers.

Umbra can be accompanied by a follower of his choice that will help him fight against enemies and will grant him specific benefits, such as defense improvements, attack...

each helper will level up based on the time that passes by our side.

Umbra will also experience progress during the game but he, unlike his companions, will have to pay to improve his equipment.

Well, I'm going to be completely honest at this point. I am not Kojima announcing my next blockbuster, I am not part of any video game company, I am just an ordinary person who strives to dedicate himself to what he is passionate about. So I invested savings and free time in carrying out this project, taking care of game design and programming. Because of this, I have had to pay promptly for each illustration, background, cover, program ... (the musician will only charge me if they finally fund us, he has a good heart) I am not part of a team of professionals that decided to start a project, but that is precisely my goal.

The game before I decided to pay an artist
The game before I decided to pay an artist

The problem is that there is still about a year and a half of work, the graphics are expensive, the musicians have to eat, the businessmen pay taxes and I have no money left to spend.

And here is where kickstarter comes in, I want to share with you something that I have dedicated years of learning and effort, something I believe in. I am sure that this project could be the beginning of something really cool, and this is my cover letter.

"We all have something to gain. Help me, and I promise we'll find out about your past."

Rufus Sleider is the captain of the Argon unit. After the events that led to the rebellion, he devoted all his means to protect his men and thwarting SIRCOM's plans. He will see in Umbra a key piece to achieve victory.

"Here comes Bertha!"

Isidro Ramirez is a technology-loving engineer who is dedicated to maintain the base of operations of the Argon patrol. His help when programming defenses is priceless. His extravagant personality may be disconcerting at first, but he is a loyal ally and even a better friend.

"You've done well, now stay at a safe distance." Azca Adamsen is an experienced military man, trained in various martial arts and very skilled with military weaponry. It is no coincidence that she is the second in command of the Argon patrol and great friend of Captain Sleider. "Lo has hecho bien. Ahora, mantente a una distancia prudencial".

Azca Adamsen es una militar experimentada, instruida en diversas artes marciales y muy diestra con armamento militar. No es casualidad que sea la segunda al mando de la patrulla argón y gran amiga del capitán Sleider.

"If circumstances were different, we could learn so much from you ..."

Dr. Eva Steirn focuses her efforts on keeping all the people around her safe. She is a distant and introverted person, although those who knew her before the rebellion remembers her as a smiling and responsible Eva.

Risks and challenges

The biggest handicap here is that I have learned a lot about game design on the last years, but I do not have any kind of experience as "businessman"

I'm afraid that this will work out well, I know that if the game is founded I will have to face a huge responsibility and tons of work, getting into a world that I do not yet know.

As for the technical part, I'm pretty sure that my expectations can be met with the money I have asked for, I am more concerned about that unexplored part, for example, would I make a game compatible with playstation? To be honest, I don't know how to talk with Sony about that yet.
