About

Sounding The Chord Main Website

Scott Joplin, Chuck Berry, Miles Davis, and Tina Turner are just a few of the many great names in music over the last 100 or so years that you can associate with St. Louis, Missouri in the Midwest section of the United States.  Most people, even if they aren't big music fans are familiar with those names and effect of their work on the music of the 1900s.

There's a part of the St. Louis area that was officially born in 1906 called University City.  In its just over 100 year history, it has become known locally as one of the arts and cultural hubs of the entire metropolitan area.  As an example, the St. Louis Walk Of Fame is located in the downtown section of University City (known as "The Loop"), where all of the people mentioned above had stars and descriptive plaques embedded in the sidewalk along with other actors, artists, engineers, and people of note.

U. City (as locals call University City) in particular has also been home to a very wide range of people involved professionally in the arts in throughout its history.  The list of people that have graduated from U. City High School runs from the author/playwright Tennessee Williams to the rapper Nelly and many others of just about any artistic background that you can think of.  It can be argued that the arts have been woven into the culture of the people from University City.

In particular, the number of people that have gone on to be professional musicians for at least one year of their lives seems to be inordinately above average.  Trying to find out how this culture of the arts became embedded in the lives of U. Citians is the major aim of The University City Musician Documentary Project.  And the segment of research that we're in right now, Sounding The Chord, is the search for as many people as possible that 1) lived in U. City for at least one year, 2) went to the public schools for at least one year, and 3) went on to be paid, professional musicians or music professionals for at least one year.

This image above is a collage showing the 35 people that we've captured on camera so far for the project.  We've traveled from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine, in 10 states and more than 20 cities to conduct interviews. And in the search for as many people as possible that fit our criteria, we have a growing list of more than 135 people that we're seeking to interview and we've heard from people in 9 countries outside of the United States.

With all of the different methods of social media that we've used to reach out and find as many people as possible for this section of the project, the number of people we've contacted has far exceed our expectations. But we're determined to record as many people as possible.

We think that this is an important bit of history, not just for U. City and St. Louis, but for the history of music throughout the US and the world.  As far as we know, nothing of this kind has been tried around St. Louis and we don't know if this depth of research has been attempted anywhere else in the US.  If not, then we want to be the first to do so.  This is where you come in...

The director has used all company and personal funding to make this project get to where it is now.  But in order for anything to continue, there has to be additional funding.  We hope that once you go to the project's main website, you'll see all of the work that has gone into the project so far and that this is a very real, viable, and important piece of work that has been undertaken.  And we hope that you'd like to be a huge part in helping it continue.

The additional funds that we seek for this project will go toward the following:

- Additional travel to the locations around the US and world where the remaining interview subjects live and work
- Storage drives for the additional footage that we will be collecting on these interviews and video production consumables (like light bulbs and batteries)
- Website podcast and video post production costs (this will further promote the project and allow for other sponsorship placement)
- Promotional materials for fundraising events and project displays

- Portions of project post-production

On the right you can see all of the incentives that we're ready to present to you if you pledge at certain levels.  We really thank you in advance for any amount that you can contribute.  We've selected our goal at $14,000, but we REALLY need more.  But we want to make sure that we can hit our mark so that we can receive some funding.

One part of the very special incentive that we're offering at the $600 level is an original drawing by acclaimed U. City native illustrator/artist Tom Seltzer.  He produced the logo for Sounding The Chord as we've documented in this video below:

We have one piece of original artwork by Tom at this level...something that he doesn't part with at all.  His design firm, Seltzer Studio Graphics based in New York City gives final versions of work to their clients, but not original art.  Whoever gets this prize will truly have something special.

So we thank you in advance for your interest in this project.  Please explore the website to find out even more and join us on Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites to follow our progress.  And feel free to ask us any questions that you have.
