Picky Mat: Cat Food Dish Liner
Keep you and your cats happy by making a partially empty food bowl look full again with this easy liner. 100% food-safe plastic.
Is Picky Mat for me?
- Do you share your primary residence with a cat?
- Does your cat complain when their dry food dish is "empty" (but not really empty)?
If you said yes to both of those questions, then Picky Mat is right for you.
Will it fit my cat dish?
Every Picky Mat package includes three different sizes: 3", 4", and 5" in diameter (approximately). Walking through multiple pet stores, one of the three sizes was a great fit for 90% of all cat dishes (and small dog dishes), and so you don't need to get out a ruler, all three sizes are included!
You just need to choose which image is best for you based on the dry food you select for your cat.
So what are my options?
Alright, alright, I'm getting there! After photographing 24 different cat foods from many different brands and retailers, there were only a few variations to the overall look. Now, testing showed it doesn't actually have to be an exact match, but options are important and life-size images are great, so here are some:
There is also a handy little spreadsheet you can check for an easy best match: (Open Google Spreadsheet)
Did you test this with real cats?
Of course! Check out the video for a brief synopsis from one of the testers, but it most definitely worked! Now, is it possible it won't work for your cat? Yes, of course, but I believe that is the exception, not the rule.
One of the most interesting tests was removing the Picky Mat after a period of time. While some cats remained trained to meow less even without the mat, those which immediately returned to old habits were satisfied as soon as the Picky Mat was put back into place.
Can't I just...
Take a photo with your phone, print it, laminate it, and... I'm exhausted just thinking about why you've wasted all that time and effort (and more than $5).
Most importantly, I'm making sure that all Picky Mats are printed using FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved plastic and ink, because your cat deserves better than all those chemicals used in photographic prints.
That $25 reward looks sweet!
Isn't that the most adorable little cookie cutter you've ever seen?! Please note that the amount of provided cat treats is not accurately represented in the image above, it just looks cuter when everything is scaled down to that adorable cookie cutter size (tablespoon for scale)!
$10,000: A fourth Picky Mat package will be added (Y Shape)!
One last question...
What did I do with all that cat food used to find the perfect Picky Mat images? It's being donated to the Boulder Humane Society, all $200+ worth in its original packaging.
Risks and challenges
My previous project was manufactured 100% by me, but this endeavor requires a more specialized manufacturer and equipment (unless this raises enough to purchase the equipment), and this would be the first time I've gone to outside manufacturing.
However, not only have I been working with someone locally who is a packaging expert with a long relationship with numerous manufacturers, but I also have more die cutting and importing expertise available in my professional network (other business owners I know personally), so I'm confident I will be able to lean on this network for advice, recommendations, and expertise if need-be.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
