About

As evident in the news today, Ukrainian identity and culture is currently under severe pressure in Ukraine due to Russian aggression.

Since 1972, the Ukrainian Canadian Archives & Museum of Alberta (UCAMA) has been doing its part to help preserve Ukrainian heritage in Alberta and has welcomed thousands of visitors who have visited its archives, library & museum.

But we’ve outgrown our present building which can no longer house and protect our collection. We’re building a beautiful new one, in an historic building overlooking Edmonton's river valley. UCAMA purchased 2 historical buildings in the heart of downtown Edmonton. One of these buildings will be rehabilitated as our new museum. The second heritage building will be updated as commercial space, to generate revenue in support of the Museum through the leasing of building space to appropriate clientele.

BUT RIGHT NOW, WE NEED YOUR HELP TO COMPLETE THE MUSEUM CONSTRUCTION!

We need an additional $50,000 to complete the construction of one of our galleries and to furnish it with appropriate display cases for our valuable collection.

Thank you for taking the time to read our Kickstarter page, and view our video. Please review the Rewards categories on the right side of this page and pledge your donation at whatever level you can. In doing so, you will help preserve  our collective heritage to be passed on to the next generation... so they too will tell the stories of our forefathers. Be an important link in the chain!

Your donation, be it large or small, makes you a vital part of this historic building project. And gets us closer to opening our doors and letting the world know about Ukrainians in Canada, their struggles and contribution to Canadian life. Help us preserve the past into the future!

OUR REWARDS

Iryna Karpenko Glass Plates

Iryna Karpenko graduated from the Kyiv College of Industrial Arts and the National Academy of Fine Art and Architecture in Ukraine. She worked as an illustrator for a number of publishing houses and children’s magazines. Her active exhibition life included a solo-exhibit at the Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra and permanent exhibitions at Tvorchist, Art-East and Neff Art Galleries in Kyiv. Iryna’s artwork earned her a Laureate title at the United Nations Fiftieth Anniversary Painting Competition and a Second Prize at the Ukrainian Poster Biennial Competition in Kyiv.

Iryna Karpenko now resides in Edmonton. Impressed by new opportunities here in Canada, Iryna came up with a new technique – art on glass. Iryna has a captivating whimsical style that she has translated to a unique work of art on glass for the UCAMA project. These glass “plates” – which are rectangular rather than round – are offered as original pieces of fine art for UCAMA Donors.

For the Bronze plates, Iryna uses textured tempered glass panels where her design is partially printed at the back of the panels. She then applies 23 karat gold leaf and gilds each section by hand before applying the final hard glaze on the back to preserve the gold layer. Each one-of-a-kind piece of fine art is signed by the artist.

For the Copper category, bevel-edged, flat glass panels are used and the design is partially printed on the panels allowing Iryna to apply copper leafing. The copper gilding is applied by hand and as a result each piece is a unique creation. The final step involves the application of a hard glaze on the back to preserve the fine art. Each piece is signed by the artist.

For the Gold plates, each textured and tempered glass panel has Iryna’s original design and signature printed in full color on the back, before the application of a final coating to preserve the piece. Each piece is numbered by Iryna Karpenko on the back.

Peter Shostak Serigraphs

PETER SHOSTAK was born and raised on a farm in northeastern Alberta. His early interest in art inspired him to major in art at the University of Alberta. In 1969, he obtained a graduate degree in Art Education and then took a teaching position at the University of Victoria. He remained there as Associate Professor of Art Education until 1979, when he decided to leave teaching and pursue a career as an artist, devoting all of his time to painting and silkscreen printing.

Much of Shostak's art reflects his memories of growing up on the prairies during the late forties and fifties. Two publications, “When Nights Were Long” and “Saturday Came But Once A Week”, reveal some of his personal history. In 1997, he collaborated with Vancouver writer, David Bouchard, on the book “Prairie Born”. His latest book “Hockey…under winter skies” was released in the fall of 2000.

In 2003, Peter Shostak received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in recognition of his outstanding exemplary contribution to Canada.

Most major cities in Canada have repeatedly hosted exhibitions of his work over the past several years and he has completed many commissioned paintings and serigraphs for individuals, organizations and corporations.

These are some of Shostak's works which will be available to UCAMA donors.

More information on Peter Shostak is available on his web site.
