Who Are We?
We’re a group of developers, gamers, hackers - oh yeah, and parents. We started Tynker in order to give our own kids a more engaging introduction to programming. We knew learning how to code would be important for building a career in the twenty-first century - but, while there were several languages and tools to choose from, we found that strings of letters and punctuation on a screen were not an attention-grabbing medium for kids. Our product, Tynker, offers a new way to learn to program. Over 23 million kids have started coding with Tynker, and every day we are inspired by what they do with it!
What is Tynker?
Tynker is an interactive platform where kids solve puzzles while learning how to build web and mobile games, create interactive stories, animations, and music, and share their creations with friends!
Does Tynker Work?
At Tynker, we are constantly striving to find the right balance of fun and learning when we build products for kids. We work with the best game designers, developers, instructional designers, art directors and producers to design high quality educational content, deeper storylines, engaging themes and likable characters.

How Does Tynker Work?
Three Coding Adventures - 400 puzzles and games - Endless possibilities
Glitch Manor: Our introductory Adventure guides your character through a haunted manor. Discover hidden secrets and unlock treasure chests with the help of sprites. Play through the ten levels and 50+ fun activities.
Turing’s Tower: Once you’ve gained some basic coding skills in Glitch Manor, traverse a steampunk-styled game world and collect parts to repair a flying castle. Program the tower's exotic abilities, collect crystals with a robotic claw or aim cannons to shoot down flying robots! Play through four worlds and build 16 games.
Goblin Quest: In our advanced Adventure, travel through a magical realm to defeat the Goblin King. Take on the role of the Hacker and change the way the world works! Kids build their own code to direct armies and program epic battles. Play through four more game worlds and build 16 more games.
Coding, and the computational thinking that it demands, gives kids the skills they need in the digital age. Whether or not they grow up to be computer programmers, kids will be able to understand the basics of how to build computer programs, which is useful for artists, journalists, business owners, and anyone regularly using computers as part of their job (that is, almost everyone!).
Our mission is to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn to code, especially girls. Currently only 18% of CS jobs are held by women. We don’t want any child to be left behind as the current generation enters today's digital world.
Why This Project?
We want to make sure that every child has the opportunity to learn to code. With your backing, we will continue to provide free coding tools and curriculum to thousands of schools and millions of kids worldwide to get introduced to programming in a fun way.
With the support we get from you in this round of funding, we will be launching our games in June 2015, and hoping to reach millions more kids!
Program battles, design your own characters and publish apps!
We’ll also be updating our apps on iPad and Android with support for connected devices so kids can use the same visual language to seamlessly command drones, the Hue/Lux light systems, and even robots like Ollie and Sphero. Kids will be able to bring their code to life, and control compatible objects -- creating spectacular light shows, flying drones through the air, and teaching their robots to put on a dance show.
When kids can see the effects of their coding take shape in the physical world, they will be even more inspired by what they’ve learned to do.
Risks and challenges
Tynker has built a number of successful coding solutions for kids and our platform is used by more than 20 million worldwide. Our new Tynker Coding Adventures contain the largest worlds we've ever built to date. Our biggest challenges with this launch are making it just as immersive and engaging for kids as our other games, ensuring its compatibility with the broadest set of platforms, and creating seamless performance on the latest set of browsers.
