Our love for wireless charging here at TYLT goes back several years. When we initially started to look into wireless charging there were a lot of flat trays with single coil designs that were not a great user experience. We kicked off some initial designs but shelved the ideas because wireless was still in it's infancy. Recent launches of several smartphones with built-in wireless charging has resulted in a significant increase in demand for a wireless charger with design and function. We set out to design a great product.
DESIGNING THE INSIDE
We knew from using wireless chargers in our own homes and office that single coil solutions were frustrating, you had to align the phone perfectly to get it to charge and sometimes depending on the phone, it would take several minutes. We knew that a multi coil solution was needed to allow easy placement of all phones. We reached out to the WPC (Wireless Power Consortium) and got the latest designs for the free positioning A6 Coil. We worked with our Engineering team and IDT the chipset maker to perfect a Free Positioning System that would be efficient and cost effective. After spinning a few prototype boards and some fine tuning with our contract factory we had a production ready board. Now we just needed to wrap it.
DESIGNING THE OUTSIDE
Once we had our Free Positioning System we worked with world famous New Deal Design in San Francisco on designing a stand up form factor that would allow you to view the phone while it charges and place the phone in any position, including landscape. Below is the design process.
The World of Wireless Charging
Once you feel the freedom of just dropping your phone onto the VU to charge and simply picking it up when you need to you are set free. We realize that we are truly tied to charging cables and they take time to plug in. The VU actually improves your battery life because you find yourself dropping your phone on the VU as a place to keep it. We usually only plug in our phone to charge when the battery is low, with the VU you charge the phone every time you put your phone down. Have a question? HOW IT WORKS
You know those cordless toothbrushes that have taken over our bathrooms, well wireless charging on smartphones works the same. A copper coil is located in the back of the phone and another copper coil (3 actually) are located inside of the VU. When the two coils get within 5mm of each other a magnetic field is established and energy is allowed to pass thru this field from the charger to the phone. This is know as "Inductively coupled power transfer" and it was invented by Michael Faraday in 1831. We now have some great applications besides the electric toothbrush.
The time it takes to charge a phone is almost exactly the same as plugging it into a wall charger. The phone will stop charging when it is fully charged and the VU wireless charger will go to standby mode when the phone is completely charged. It works even if you have a protective case on your phone.
Update: INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING NOW $27 We investigated the shipping and will now ship FedEx International but will NOT pre-pay duties and will declare the value of the VU at $25, which is the true value of the investment into the production of the VU. You should not have to pay any duties or fees in Australia, Germany, France, UK, Canada.
There are many phones that have built in wireless charging or the ability to add a back door. Here is a current list.
If you don't have a wireless charging phone, we are offering adapters for two of the most popular phones, the iPhone 4/S (Color: Black) and the Samsung Galaxy S3 (Colors: White and Pebble Blue). (We don't have iPhone 5 or Galaxy S4 Sorry) You can also check online (Amazon) or at your phone service provider as they may stock a wireless back door for your phone. Any Qi compatible product will work with VU.
NOTE: Samsung has just started to sell the Galaxy S4 Back door adapter on their websites and at Verizon Stores.
How we will manufacture it:
With the Kickstarter Funding we will offset the first production run of the VU. We have invested to bring the product to production ready state. We are members of the WPC (Wireless Power Consortium) so our product will be Qi Certified for compatibility. We have been working on this project for over 12 months and we have lot's of working prototypes, now we just need help with the initial production run funding and we are ready to go. Risks and challenges
We have been working on this project for 12 months and have produced a dozen prototypes, the board is laid out and the chipsets and coils are ready for mass production. We have opened tooling on the enclosure and our manufacturer is lined up and ready to build. If we meet our goal this will help offset the first production run and get VU into full production.
