About

中文版 | ภาษาไทย

Teochew Conversations is a new, high-quality, entertaining, and educational video series of everyday conversations in Teochew! Help us make it a reality!

  • A simple idea with a powerful impact
  • Film people speaking Teochew with all kinds of topics, ages, accents, places
  • Make these videos freely available videos for anyone so they preserve, promote, and teach our language to current and future generations

  •  The Teochew Store (for all kinds of Teochew-related books, links to media, and in-depth blog posts)
  • Diana Zheng of Three Gems Tea (a successfully funded Kickstarter bringing TC-style kung-fu tea to you!)

Remember: Funding is all or nothing - if we don't reach our goal, we don't get any of the fundraised money (it's refunded to the backers). So please help us reach our funding target!

About

Maybe you grew up speaking Teochew, or know someone, or love someone who speaks Teochew. If you do, then you know that Teochew is a pretty cool language. It's got eight tones, lots of old words, and nasal sounds - what's not to love?

But Teochew needs more love.

Even though there are 20+ million Teochew speakers in a worldwide diaspora, it's not an official language anywhere. Without any countries promoting it, basically no one is getting educated in Teochew, or even knows how to read or write in Teochew. Because other languages are becoming more important in the lives of Teochew people, young people aren't as fluent and some families don't pass it down to their kids at all.

What is Teochew Conversations?

Teochew Conversations is our idea to help promote, preserve, and teach Teochew. While there is some Teochew-language media out there on the interwebs, not much of it shows Teochew as it's spoken in everyday life - the kind of Teochew that is nearest and dearest to us and the most useful for learning.

Teochew Conversations is our plan to produce a series of high-quality videos showing Teochew speakers talking on a wide variety of everyday topics. We will include accurate English and Teochew (and other) subtitles so that everyone can watch and re-watch the videos for fun or for study.

Because Teochew is spoken in so many places with different accents, we also want to film in different places in the diaspora so we can show how diverse Teochew language is.  We will also get to learn more about the culture, histories, and lives of Teochew people from all over the world.

Our Teochew name for Teochew Conversations is 潮語潮事 Dio Gheu Dio Seu.

The Teochew Conversations Team - Ty (left), Zenghiok (right)

Who are we?

We're Ty Lim and Zenghiok Ng! We're both fellow Teochew-nang trying to apply our talents to make this project a reality.

Ty Lim - I was the co-founder of the nonprofit organization Gaginang which started in 2003 and promotes Teochew culture, language, and identity among Teochew youth in North America and beyond. I am also the co-creator of What Teochew Say? (also funded through Kickstarter) the first mobile English-language Teochew dictionary and phrasebook which first came out in 2013 and is still being updated. I come from a Cambodian-Teochew family and was raised in New York City and work in instructional design. I'm applying my learning design and project management skills to Teochew Conversations as the Project Lead.

Zenghiok Ng - I'm the founder of the YouTube Channel Gaginang, a channel dedicated to preserving and promoting Teochew language and culture. I'm also the director of the cultural vlog series “Tour in Teochew”, and I was born and raised in Teochew, China and am currently studying Cinema (Production) at CU Boulder. As the Production Lead, I'm in charge of set design, lighting, sound, video, and post-production.

Los Angeles Shoot

The Plan

In mid-August (2019) we arranged for the first Teochew Conversations video shoot to happen in Los Angeles.  It was a success!

There's a lot to do in preparing for a shoot: getting in touch with potential participants, reviewing discussion topics, vetting their interest, figuring out logistics, renting a studio. And for the shoot itself, prepping the talent, set design, lighting, mic-checks, and so on. The LA shoot was a good test run for us and we took down notes of things we will do differently next time to improve our videos.

If we're successfully funded we plan to shoot the rest of the videos for this first series during the last week of December going over into January of 2020.  For the remaining videos we plan to go to the following locations:

  • Teoswa, China
  • Penang, Malaysia
  • Bangkok, Thailand

** If you are interested in being a participant, fill out this Teochew Conversations Participant Interest Form (non-China) | 潮语潮事 嘉宾信息采集表 (China). If you know someone who might be interested feel free to share this information flyer (which has the form link on it as well). Even if you are not in one of our locations, please contact us anyway - future trips may be planned*

After filming, we'll take the many hours of raw footage, edit, cut, review, and add captions. We're hoping to produce a wide variety of videos. Example titles: would be "How do we save and promote Teochew Language", "What is Teochew Food?", "Teochew Migration Stories", and much much more. We plan to produce dozens of high quality videos from the footage we get. We'll also provide a list of vocabulary words and grammar for people to learn from.  We estimate that we can begin releasing the videos by April of 2020.

The Budget

A rough breakdown of our budget is listed below. Please note that these are estimates and the actual percentages may change. The majority of the work will be done by the two of us (Ty and Zenghiok) with help from location contacts and participants.

  • 30% Travel Related (airfare, lodging, meals, ground travel)
  • 24% Purchases (video equipment, data storage)
  • 23% Labor (coordination, videography, post-production, captioning, etc.)
  • 10% Kickstarter (the cut that Kickstarter takes + payment processing)
  • 4% Talent (honorariums)
  • 6% Rewards (printing)
  • 3% Rentals (studio, equipment)

Our equipment purchases combined with our skills in video production and instructional design will ensure that the final products are interesting (wide variety of topics), educational (researched learning materials), and of the highest quality (multiple camera angles, professional lighting, crisp sound).

Why should you back this project?

Ty: I love Teochew language and I'm still trying to improve the fluency of my own Teochew - that's probably a big reason why I found a need for this project. I view Teochew language as a living treasure and have been working almost my entire adult life to help it grow. I want you to ask yourself: if we don't help Teochew language thrive, who will?  I hope you'll consider backing our project!

Risks and challenges

We feel good about the project budget and timeline and have given ourselves some leeway for unexpected costs and time sinks. Thanks to our on-the-ground experience in Los Angeles, we know how to manage shoots better and the creation of the rewards should go smoothly. With that said, there is always the potential for issues to arise and hope that you will be patient with us if they do.
