About this project
Raised on Ritalin: A Personal Story of ADHD, Medication, and Modern Psychiatry is my story of being diagnosed with ADD and treated with Ritalin, and all the ways that has impacted my life. It is also the story of ADD/ADHD itself - the origins and development of the diagnosis and its treatments including drugs like Ritalin and Adderall, as well as its biological and sociological underpinnings, and even the history of modern psychiatry in general.
I have spent the last 5 years writing, researching, and drawing this book, and posting it online HERE.
Raised on Ritalin had it's beginnings when I found a bunch of my old medical records at my parents' house.
It was bizarre but enlightening to read through my doctor's comments. It was like a book about my life from a totally different perspective. I learned a lot about myself and my family. I knew the records would be useful for something some day. When I started a family and began to worry my kids might have the same problems I had, I knew I needed to learn everything about ADHD I could. Would I give them medication like my parents had given me? Would it help them? Did it help me?
I learned a lot from making this book. The factual information it contains pertaining to ADHD is already out there in countless other books and academic journal articles but none of them had all of it in one place, integrated with actual personal experience. (They also tended to be very dry, boring, and hard to understand.)
Raised on Ritalin uses my firsthand experience of growing up with ADD and being treated with Ritalin to look at the disorder and the world surrounding it from many angles (personal, historical, scientific), presented in an accessible, appealing, and engaging format. This is a chance for readers to experience what it is like to be diagnosed and treated for ADD and all of the questions and issues that can raise.
The book itself will be black-and-white with a color cover, measure 6x9" with fancy French flaps, and clock in at 400 pages.
What is The Money For?
To print a minimum of 1,000 copies I am asking for $6000 which breaks down this way:
$4410 for printing
$352.80 for 8% Kickstarter and processing fees
$952.56 for shipping minimum books to make goal.
$5715.36 total. I am rounding up to an even $6000 to cover any other expenses that arise (like extra shipping for higher-end rewards, some of the tax I will have to pay on the income, etc.).
Any Stretch Goals?
If I raise more money than the initial goal it will go toward physical improvements for the book (like nicer paper) and printing more copies.
Risks and challenges
Raised on Ritalin is already done! You can actually read the whole thing online if you want (www.raisedonritalin.com). I have printed and published several books before and have over 15 years of experience as a graphics and printing professional. Barring any kind of unforeseen issue (like an injury or illness) I don't see any major challenge to getting this book into your hands. Raised on Ritalin will be ready to go to the printer pretty much as soon as the project is funded.
