We hit our $3300 goal on Halloween morning, but there's still time to get in! If we reach $4500, we can turn this into a hardcover edition!
Just in time for Halloween, Beautiful Monsters is a full color art book filled with pinup style monsters inspired by classic literature and mythology.
Beautiful Monsters was born from a discussion during a Bride of Frankenstein inspired session. We joked about how Monsters were people, too - they just needed love in their life. So we began to brainstorm ideas to create a "Monster Positive" campaign to show the world how beautiful creepy can be.
Having done a Pinup Book already this year, it seemed only natural to extend the pinup and glamour style into my other love - horror. I have been in the haunted house industry for 13 seasons and it has given me a passion for all the things that go bump in the night. Halloween seemed like the perfect opportunity to launch the project on Kickstarter, when the ghosts and ghouls are at their peak.
You may already follow some of my work on different channels - Frightography, DFWPinup, or TXHeadshots on Instagram. If not, you can get a feel for my style there. If you do share this Kickstarter, please feel free to tag any of those names on Instagram or Twitter (they are the same there).
You can also follow those (especially Frightography and TXHeadshots) for updates and stories while the project is underway.
The book is planned to be an 8x10 softcover, perfect bound book with 60 full color, glossy pages. Each of the 27 featured Beautiful Monsters will have a two page spread with their "hero shot" and on the facing page, at least one other image plus a brief, romantic line or two about her.
The cover price is planned to be $30 and the print run will be limited (final numbers available after the campaign ends).
I have plans to upgrade the book to hardcover, increase the size, and perhaps even add a few more pages if we reach some stretch goals, but one step at a time.
Lar Park Lincoln
I am also absolutely thrilled to announce that my friend, Lar Park Lincoln from Friday the 13th, Part VII - The New Blood, also wants to be a part of the project. We have a special bonus image planned for her that will be an homage to the movie poster for Part VII. This image will not only be featured in the book, but will be available as a poster - and Lar has graciously agreed to personally autograph copies of the posters for a limited number of special backers. The signed version of the poster will be available at the $75 and $100 pledge levels.
Non-signed versions of the poster will be available for sale later.
Lar Park Lincoln Add-Ons
Available as an Add-On EXCLUSIVE to Kickstarter Backers - this will not be available later - A box of 4x6 Photos from the photo session with Lar Park Lincoln in the Jason Tribute makeup. Lar had a great deal of fun in this makeup, so I am adding a box of 20 images from her session as an available add-on. (See Update #2 for some samples.) The box of all 20 images is $25 additional. You can add it to your pledge by following these instructions:
1. Press the "manage your pledge" button (if you haven't backed the project, yet, it will say "Back this Project")
2. Increase your pledge by $25 (there is no additional shipping)
3. Send me a message saying that you added the $25 for the Lar Park Lincoln Box.
Brad is a North Texas based artist who tells people’s stories and captures their emotions in sometimes fantastical, sometimes bizarre, sometimes surreal ways. Using his imagination, camera, and digital tools, he has created work for clients big and small. His work has been published in nationally distributed books and magazines, has been featured in feature length motion pictures, and has won numerous awards.
His book from Amherst Media titled Retro Glamour & Pinup Photography was published in January 2017 and he is now working on some new, exciting projects.
He holds Master of Photography and Photographic Craftsman degrees from Professional Photographers of America and continues to teach and write about art and photography.
Here are just what a couple of clients have said...
"Meeting Brad was life changing and I mean that. I met Brad at one of the lowest points in my life. And the opportunities he has provided me with are just amazing and I am so grateful for that. He has shown me where I belong in life and has provided me with the chance to be something more than I am. He has shown me just how much I can grow and who I can become. And I see so much potential in myself thanks to him."
"I’ve always had a not so great self image of myself, but Brad def changed the way I saw myself for the first time in the almost 27 years I’ve been alive. He helped bring out the beauty I’ve never seen in myself before. I felt alive, I felt beauty, I felt happiness, and I felt inspired, Not only in mind but in spirit and my heart as well. I can honestly say he changed me that day by the photos he captured and showed me my true beauty."
What's a Kickstarter without rewards? And I have what I think are some great ones... from telling my dog you supported us all the way up through an Ultimate Beautiful Monsters session of your own, I hope there is something for everyone.
Pay special attention to these:
$25 - Limited availability to reward the first backers of the project - a copy of the book and poster. The book will be selling for $30, so this is a steal!
$75 - Limited to just 13, you receive the book plus a copy of the special poster featuring Lar Park Lincoln - personally signed to you.
$100 - Another limit of 13, you get the signed poster from Lar, but you will also receive a copy of the book signed by all of the Beautiful Monsters.
$1000 - A copy of the book signed by all the models, Lar's poster signed, plus a custom Beautiful Monsters session - including hair, makeup, costume rental, and a 30 inch art print of your session. This is all valued at over $2000, but two of you could have it for $1000.
The current plan is to use PrintNinja to print our books.
United States and international shipping are included in the reward levels of this campaign. We will use the United States Postal Service to ship. If you would like a different shipping method, feel free to contact us when the surveys are sent out and we will arrange it (there may be an additional fee if we use a different shipping method).
Timelines are tricky things with this many people involved, but here are my current estimates:
October 1, 2017 - Kickstarter campaign launched
October 15, 2017 - Begin scheduling of the models for their sessions
November 1, 2017 - A happy dance because you all supported my project
November 2, 2017 - Begin principal photography for remaining Beautiful Monsters
January 31, 2018 - Principal photography complete for all Beautiful Monsters
March 30, 2018 - All digital editing of the Beautiful Monsters completed
May 1, 2018 (Halfway to Halloween) - Book layouts complete and sent to printer
June, 2018 - Printing complete and all printed materials on their way to backers
June, 2018 - Release party for Beautiful Monsters
Risks and challenges
Risk #1 - Issues with the printing house.
I have two backup printing houses selected in case my first choice has issues that prevents them from fulfilling the order.
Risk #2 - Overwhelming number of books shipped to countries outside the US
I am negotiating with two different fulfillment centers that can handle shipping for non-US fans
Risk #3 - Models backing out of the project
I have several additional volunteers that are willing to step in to replace anyone who needs to leave the project.
There are bound to be problems. It's how we deal with them that's important. Before I was an artist, I was a project manager. I understand how timelines are important and communication is essential. I promise to keep everyone updated every step of the way and if you have any questions at all - just message me through Kickstarter or any one of the social channels above and I will get back to you as soon as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
