Backers & Friends-

The TL:DR update version: Today we’ve added a breathtaking deluxe wood version as well as an Illimat expansion at the Kickstarter exclusive price of $12+shipping that you can add onto your pledge.

The Captain’s Illimat

We here at Illimat HQ are committed to making a beautiful, well-designed game with the best quality materials. So making a “deluxe” version of our game had to be truly special and an object of lasting beauty. We’ve partnered with the craftspeople at Wyrmwood who in collaboration with Carson Ellis have designed a game board worthy of The Captain of Eyes. Backers at The Captain’s Illimat level receive the following rewards:

  • The Captain’s Illimat
  • A copy of Illimat & All Unlocked Kickstarter Rewards
  •  Membership in the Society of Luminaries at the rank of Captain of Eyes, including the Initiate, Apprentice, Head Clerk, and Captain of Eyes pins, along with a unique SOL Membership card.

And now, Mr. Colin Meloy to tell you the additional exciting news….

Jenn & Keith

…………….

Hello Backers, Future Society of Luminaries members, idle websurfers…

Colin here. First off, I’d be remiss if I didn’t note that, as of this writing, ILLIMAT has been backed by nearly 4,000 of you and has surmounted its initial funding level by several hundreds of percents. THANK YOU.

SO: As you might’ve heard from other, concentric circles, it happens that we Decemberists are celebrating the 10th Anniversary of our 2006 LP The Crane Wife by reissuing it as a lovely 5 LP + 1 DVD box set. We’ve remastered the original record and fit it on to 3 sides (why didn’t we do that in the first place?) and filled the 4th side with outtakes. There’s a further 3rd LP of unreleased outtakes, with the 4th and 5th LPs rounding the package out with all the home demos (unreleased as well) that were recorded prior to the studio sessions. We’ve also thrown in a DVD of a heretofore ne’er seen LIVE SHOW from October of 2006, one of two nights we played at the legendary 9:30 Club in D.C. during the Crane Wife tour. This is all rounded out, of course, with a fetching large format booklet chock-o-block with ruminative essays on things-Crane-Wife from both Lin-Manuel Miranda and David Fricke. Also available in a digital medium, this lovely package is available for preorder NOW; it will arrive at homes and record stores everywhere on December 9.

What does this have to do with ILLIMAT, you ask? Astute question.

It seemed auspicious that the 10th anniversary of the Crane Wife and the creation of the Illimat would coincide; we figured we should mark the occasion somehow. And so we asked Keith Baker, Illimat designer, to create a further SIX special Crane Wife-themed Luminaries that will, in effect, act as an expansion to the existing eight that come with the core game.

To my mind, the Luminaries serve one of the more interesting mechanics of the game; they not only insert a further surprise element to the game, but they make the game endlessly fresh from one hand to the next. We’d always wanted the core game to have eight Luminaries, but we’d envisioned the possibility for many future iterations of Luminaries, adding new and exotic twists to the gameplay.

To celebrate The Crane Wife’s 10th birthday, the 6-Luminary/2 Okus token expansion is available now as an add-on to your Kickstarter pledge.

When Keith came to us with the initial design of Illimat, he had the first eight Luminaries fleshed out to his satisfaction more or less. We’d asked him to make a game that was not necessarily themed on the Hazards of Love, the record for which the Illimat had been originally created, but one that would nod to it somehow. The 8 core Luminaries manage to do that with some finesse — they each alone influence the play of the game, but laid out side by side, it’s possible to tell the story of the Hazards of Love itself. It’s a bit of genius, we think.

While The Crane Wife does not have the dedicated narrative that HoL does, there were plenty of elements to work with. The ones we’ve chosen are THE BOAT, THE SOLDIERS, THE PERFECT CRIME #3 (get it?), THE LOOM, THE ISLAND, and THE BUTCHERS. Keith and I had been tossing ideas for different Luminary mechanics back and forth during the game’s early playtesting — some of these made their way into the these cards. It was an interesting process, both finding a record-related element that felt Luminary-like and trying to discover what its mechanic should be. For example, Keith was keen on making THE LOOM’s mechanic be beneficial to the players while it was in play, but exact a kind of toll on the player who should claim it.

Kinda like the poor Crane Wife herself, right?

We really love these new additions to the game. We hope you love them as well.

yours,

Colin.

Correct @Adam! (We're feeling the lack of edit ability ourselves today!)

Gee I really wish kickstarter would let you edit these...

So add $14 for the expansion?

@Adam - We'll have a survey to ensure that we know what add-ons you wanted, but we may or may not have the ability to select additional add-ons at that time, so you should do it now.

Oh also, should we add the $12 to our pledge now for the expansion or will there be some backerkit type option to deal with that after the campaign?

@Twogether, did you consider making it a little smaller then? I mean I appreciate what you're doing, but honestly even Tak's board was a little bit of a stretch to justify monetarily. I feel like Illmat would be amazing to have in a similar form-factor, but... dat money doe.

    9. Twogether Studios, LLC 4-time creator on

@Therese - The Crane Wife expansion is $12 as the base price (lower than what we expect for retail), with an additional $2 ($3 for EU) to cover shipping.

@Mark - We are looking at a few different possibilities, but there will certainly be a method provided (whether a box or something else) for storing the Captain's Illimat. And we will make sure it supports the Crane Wife expansion as well.

    11. Twogether Studios, LLC 4-time creator on

@Adam - The primary issue for the cost is the size of the board. In total, the board is 24" x 24"; each section of the board is 12"x12" (so in comparison to Wyrmwood's Tak set, it's more than four times the size of that board). We considered using lower quality woods to reduce the cost, but discussing it with Wyrmwood's craftspeople we decided to go with a set we're truly proud of. But we understand the concern!

Does the Captain's set come with some kind of box, container, etc., to store the board, box, and other components? Also, if we get the Crane Wife box for the luminaries, will there be a place to store that in the Captain's set?

I definitely added the Crane Wife expansion. After playing the game yesterday during a demo at Guardian Games here in Portland, I absolutely in love with it and can't wait to finally get my hands on a copy. I already know the perfect location for my first secret Society of Luminaries Illimat gathering!

      So $14, not $12?

Hi @Jen you can absolutely add on to your existing pledge. The add on prices that include the shipping are listed on the campaign page and we made a little cheat sheet on how to do it right here: http://illimat.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Add-on-in-3steps.pdf

@Matthew- We've been playtesting the crane wife luminaries and it's been fun & exciting!

The Wyrmwood edition looks gorgeous but that's a bit pricey even by Wyrmwood standards. Another Wyrmwood board I backed on kickstarter (which came with a regular edition of the game and all kinds of extras as well) was barely 2/3 this price. I'd love to have one, but I can't justify spending that much on a game I've haven't even played yet. If you could get it closer to $400 I'd be seriously tempted.

I'm sure you've researched your pricing, I just felt the need to say that. Maybe different woods could bring it down. Also, I agree that the fold-away aspect to the regular Illmat game is a huge appeal. I wouldn't expect the Wyrmwood edition to be *quite* as portable but if it could be a little more... packable... that would be a huge appeal.

Can't wait for the game, super excited. Would love to have a Wyrmwood (or similar quality) version some day. I'll definitely be adding the $12 for the expansion.

Is it possible to add the Crane Wife expansion to an existing pledge? I went for the SOL APPRENTICE, TRANSMISSIONS FRONT but can only see the Crane Wife attached to the standard game package...

    18. Matthew Tyler-Jones on

The wooden version of the game looks very pretty, but I think I prefer the feel and especially, the "fold-away-into-the-Illimat-ness" nature of the fabric "original". So it's no sale for me. The Cranes Wife expansion is attractive though.
