August & September Recap - Critters and Cornerstones

Dear backers,

Sorry it’s been two months since our last update – but only because we’ve all been very occupied with development. Even though we are still not ready to announce some bigger news, we do want to always keep you up to date on what’s happening in the world of Pine.

The world is starting to become more alive, with player-side mechanics pretty much finished and more critters making their way into the fray. More importantly, we’ve been working hard on defining landmarks and putting the lore on the island: specifically, each village is now centered around what we call a cornerstone (a cool idea or foundation that explains the village’s background, goal and structure).

We do not want to spoil too much, so we’re going to keep it light – but here are some highlights of what we’ve been working on!

The player map is in - a map you can walk around with!

For a while we’ve been working on exploration mechanics, and one of the more exciting ones is the map in Pine. You can walk around with it in the game, making sure you can keep an eye on what’s happening around you.

Villages and cornerstones

As mentioned, villages are getting large upgrades. Alongside their structural and logistical improvements, each village location has a unique story. As they’re dynamic, you won’t always see them, and any species can live there, but quests and visuals are based around their location and functionality.

Landmarks

Not only villages, but also landmarks are making it into the game. Important places with mysterious lore that you can see from multiple places on the island, guiding you through it.

Also, all types of villages are now in the game, including the Gobbledew's, which makes for a nice new landmark too:

We’ve worked on nests for critters, so that now you can see where they reside and sleep.

We’ve also added the Bleeker, a dangerous one you should keep an eye out for!

Bounty bills, raid groups and affinities

We’re working on ways to objectify the relations on the island, and one of those comes in the form of the Affinity Board that you’ll find in every village. Here, you can order bounty bills on villages, meaning you pay to place a bounty on any village you know of. Another village will then take the bounty and send a raid group to attack that village!

Much, much more has been worked on in the past months. We’re making a lot of good progress, but are definitely getting into spoiling territory. We hope it’s still informative!

      Looks very nice. I do love the map feature. One of the games I remember fondly which tried something new with maps in games was 'Miasmata'. Check it out on GOG or Steam.
      And thanks for keeping spoilers out of the update as I am looking forward to the release and the fresh experience. :)
