About this project

Memphis, TN is sometimes called the Detroit of the South. We literally have thousands of acres of empty land, much of it in depressed neighborhoods or former industrial sites in need of rehabilitation. There is little to no wildlife in these areas, for lack of food and ground cover. Memphis also has one of the lowest bee populations of any urban center in the South.

I am striving to change this with a cannon shot. Using an air cannon, seeds and a nutrient rich, food based paint are fired into these lots. The air cannon attracts people from the neighborhood as well as allowing us access to areas blocked by thick undergrowth, or more commonly, fences. The seeds are a blend of wildflowers and sorghum which provides an immediate food stock for any wildlife and if they are not eaten, will grow into plants which will bring wildlife back.
We will also be reintroducing the Tennessee Coneflower, an EPA listed Endangered Species to Shelby County.

While Memphis is the first target, we hope this will be a model for other cities to take back this abandoned and disused land.

The financial support created through Kickstarter will help us reach our 10,000,000 seed goal, which will grow into between 1 and 2.5 million flowering plants. Not only will this bring ecology to the inner city, it will also assist in the cleaning of the air and soil. We currently have one cannon and about 300,000 seeds. We plan to build more so that community groups can borrow them and cover more land in a shorter time.

What others are saying about the project!

Roving bands of hopeful Americans are improving the places they live by means of guerrilla warfare: painting bike lane art, planting tulips, and setting up street cafés. It's community activism for the impatient, and Memphis artist and photographer Tommy Wilson is the latest to join the ranks of those pimping the pavement.

Founder of the brand-new project Bomb the Blight, Wilson is stocking his arsenal (aka his air cannon) with modified "seed bombs": biodegradable balloons pumped with plant-based paint, native wildflower seeds, fertilizer, organic matter, and a splash of color. The idea is to have community members fire these bombs of public art into areas of urban blight, such as an abandonded lot, where they'll release explosions of color and lay the groundwork for native blooms next spring. It's a transformation of ruin porn into nature porn.
