Tumbao refers to a drum or bass pattern of Afro-Cuban origin. For Tumbao 21, it’s the rhythm that unites Cuban, Puerto Rican, and other Latin music for urban Latinos in the 21st century. The music of Tumbao 21 respects the heritage of Latin Big Band and Salsa, while introducing a new musical style that modernizes folk music inherent to Latin culture. The instrumentation includes 15 horns and Afro-Caribbean percussion.
Join us in creating Latin Big Band magic
Tumbao 21 represents the future of Latin music, and we want you to be a part of it! After just over a year of writing, we're now ready to record with a full orchestra, with your help. We're raising $45,000 to pay for pre-production, recording, post-production, payment for singers, musicians, and section leaders, and all other costs involved (materials, overdubbing, rehearsal space, etc.).
Our ultimate dream would be to raise $60,000 in order to get all the musicians recording in one room together. This would fund a larger studio recording space, which would be simply magical.
Our gifts to you
If we could have each one of you in the recording studio with us, watching these incredible singers, horn players, and rhythm section come together, we would be in pure heaven. However, we are pleased to offer our supporters advance digital downloads of the album before the official Tumbao 21 release. No matter what level you pledge, we've made sure that you will have a chance to take our music home (or to the dance floor).
We're offering three pieces of Tumbao 21 signature artwork by our fellow writer, Johnny Crespo. Most recently, CBS LA named him one of the Best Local Los Angeles Artists. His pieces in the Kickstarter Limited Edition collection are entitled, "Fascinación," "Garabato con Bembe," and "Rumba en el Barrio," available as 5x7 art cards and desktop screensavers.
Join the Tumbao 21 revolution by sporting our Tumbao 21 T-shirt, exclusively designed for Kickstarter supporters.
In addition, we are offering a 24x36 print of "Rumba en el Barrio," printed on canvas.
The Tumbao 21 team and members of the percussion section will personally sign an exclusive set of Tumbao 21 traditional wood bongo drums.
Our BEST gifts include being our guest at one of the recording sessions, a custom song created just for you, and a jam session with the four Tumbao 21 writers and as many musicians as we can squeeze into one of our studio spaces in LA.
Four Unique Composers, One Amazing Sound
Tumbao 21 is a collaborative effort of Tony Shogren, Tony Manjarrez, Mike Yturralde, Johnny Crespo—four composers who have been writing and playing Latin music for many years. You can read more about us here. With our knowledge and experience, we have worked and re-worked each piece featured on the album, improving the music beyond what any of us could do on an individual level.
The Writing: Latin Big Band
What makes Tumbao 21 a wonderful cultural project is the outpouring of modern musical imagination and respect for tradition. The album pays homage to the Latin Big Band music, “The Big Three” (Tito Puente, Machito, and Tito Rodríguez), and West Coast Latin musicians. As writers, we realize that you have to have a mastery of the musical rules before you can break them. Just as Miles Davis understood Be Bop to change Jazz in the 50s, we're taking elegant historical styles like Afro-Cuban, Bomba, Danzón, Charanga, and Rumba and putting them into a new context.
Grammy Winning Co-conductor, “Prizefighter” Oscar Hernandez
We are co-conducting the band with three-time Grammy winner, Oscar Hernandez. He has long been considered one of the most gifted and prominent pianist/arrangers in the contemporary Latin, Latin Jazz and Salsa music scene. Oscar began his career as an arranger and musical director in the 1970s for artists like Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Celia Cruz and many others. It is an honor to work with him.

THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR SUPPORT!
Risks and challenges
When this project is funded, we will be just beginning a new set of challenges that we are prepared to overcome. Aside from securing rehearsal and studio space, the biggest challenge for this project will be scheduling the musicians. These are 30-40 artists who are constantly in high demand for top dollar gigs. We are in the process of securing alternates, should anyone not be able to make it, for any reason.
The same goes for rehearsal and tracking studios. Big Band projects are so rare in this digital age, that now there are several technical accommodations we have to make for recording in this style. Fortunately for us, we have a premier engineer in the industry, Mike Aarvold, heading up our tech team. There are a lot of plan B options for this project that are still ideal.
As far as our gift fulfillment to our Kickstarter supporters is concerned, we will keep you updated will the progress of the album (and other fun gifts), which may or may not include any unforeseen delays. As the studio space cannot officially be secured until funding has been achieved, there is a possibility that our space may be limited. But don't worry, we'll make room for our investors attending the recording sessions!
The beauty of Kickstarter, and having supporters like you, is that we are in this project together. As our investors, we are happy to include you as much as we can, and are extremely grateful for both your financial and emotional support.
Thank you for believing in us!
