About

At Draken we strive to create original timepieces that are built to handle the rigours of the great outdoors. With our first watch, the Tugela, we created a completely new case design with a shape inspired by the Protea flower. For our next watch we focused on innovation, but still creating a watch that is rugged, high quality and purely functional.

While the Tugela was a tremendous success, we did learn some valuable lessons along the way. This led us to partnering with a new watch making team who specialise in creating watches for some of the top boutique watch brands. Their hands on approach meant that we could get to this stage as quickly and smoothly as possible. They also had the technical expertise to pull off the design of the Peregrine.

The Peregrine draws inspiration from the dash mounted clocks in vintage military aircraft. The most notable features of those clocks were:

  • A large, highly legible dial.
  • Distinct sword hands
  • A large knurled crown.

We took cues from some of these vintage dials, but we also wanted to make something unique and modern. Using applied markers we've created a design that is stylish, but also functional. The  black dial has lume filled markers, and on the white dial a full-lumed dial with black paint applied markers.

Adding to this, we’ve included a subtle feature that has rarely, if ever been done in watch making - a logo that changes colour! If the watch is fully unwound, the logo will appear orange, then as the watch is wound the logo will change from orange to white. Think of this like a fuel gauge for your watch. If left off the wrist for a long period you’ll be able to easily see how much power is remaining, by how white the logo is.

Under the hood is the Miyota 9130 from Citizen which is a few steps up from the Seiko NH35A used in the Tugela. An alternative to the Swiss ETA 2824 movement, the Miyota 9-series is regarded as an accurate reliable workhorse movement. The 9130 beats at 28,800hz, giving you that silky smooth sweeping second hand. It also hacks, which means that you can stop the second hand to precisely synchronise your watch.

The power reserve indicator

This version of the Miyota 9-series has the added complication of a power reserve indicator, a feature which we are very excited to use for the first time. The power reserve indicator shows how much power, of the 40 hour reserve, is left in the mainspring. Most watch makers would use a hand to indicate this above the dial, but we really wanted to make this more subtle so as not to distract from the main 3 hands.

To do this, we placed the indicator behind the dial so that it shows through the logo. This is possibly the first time this has ever been done on an automatic watch. The logo will literally change colour when the watch is running low on power. Not only that, but we also added luminous paint to the disk behind the logo, so that you can tell how much power is remaining even in the dark.

The dial utilises a combination of elements to create a utility pilot style watch with excellent legibility. We’ve used a modern font for large numerals at 3, 6 and 9 and the traditional pilots marker at 12h. At every other hour is an applied Swiss Superluminova BGW9 lume filled marker (Note: this may change to C3 for production). Blue accent colours appear in the form of triangles to balance with the blue seconds hand.

There is also the option of a full lume dial, which is a complete invert of the black dial.

The shape of the handset for the Peregrine is inspired by vintage Flieger watches, with Swiss SuperLuminova BGW9 for a fantastic blue luminous effect. For the full lume dial, the paint on the hands is inverted for a dazzling night time display.

316L stainless steel is the material of choice for the Peregrine. 316L is highly corrosion resistant and the bead-blasted finish gives it another level of scratch resistance.

It comes in 2 different finishes - bead-blasted and black DLC (Diamond-like Carbon) coating for that ultimate stealth appearance.

The case still uses the tapered cylinder design used in the Tugela, but in a slightly bigger package (44mm diameter). We made the decision to move to a slightly bigger diameter for a few reasons. The first being that this new case design allows for the fit of a much wider array of movements. With the Peregrine’s unique power reserve indicator, we needed the extra diameter and height. It is also fitting that the dials of vintage pilot style watches were also much bigger to accommodate the more accurate movements and to improve the legibility.

The Peregrines crown is a wonderful tactile experience, as if you were turning the knob on an old WWII cockpit dash. Yes, the Peregrine has a big crown. We learnt from our experience with the Tugela and made sure that the crown was as easy to turn as possible. The crown is screw down, which helps with the water resistance of the watch. It also features a luminous logo.

This is our first watch to have an exhibition case back. The rotor is PVD coated, to create an amazing contrast with the crisp movement below. We went the extra mile and decorated the rotor with our logo, using luminous paint. Some might say 'why?' We say why not?

You'll have a choice between the 2 straps. The first being a green canvas strap, for a vintage military look. Next is the brown calf leather strap. It's soft and supple and extremely comfortable.

We are also excited to announce a special partnership with iwantastrap.com to bring you the Peregrine sailcloth strap. iwantastrap.com is one of the only online stores specialising in these high-quality straps. The Draken sailcloth straps will come with the matching finished buckle for your watch. You'll be able to add the sailcloth strap to your order at the end of the campaign for a discount price of NZ$41 (US$30).

As part of the Peregrine launch, we're offering a t-shirt pledge. You'll be able to order a high quality AS Colour t-shirt with our Draken Watches logo. You'll also be able to add a t-shirt to your order after the campaign ends.

$90K Stretch goal:  Every Peregrine gets an extra coat of anti-reflective coating on the inner side of the sapphire crystal. This will help to improve daytime legibility.

$110K stretch goal: The leather and canvas straps will be upgraded with quick release springs, making strap changing a 5 second job, instead of 5 minutes.

$150K stretch goal: Every watch will come with an olive green Zulu strap made of high grade ballistic nylon.

$200K stretch goal: ???

We are extremely proud of the watches we create, and we want you to be proud to wear them. If there is a problem, don't hesitate to get in touch, and we’ll do everything we can to get it sorted. We want to stand by our promise of a quality watch by offering a 2-year limited warranty. We’re in this for the long haul, so if you support us, we'll support you.

Duty and taxes are the responsibility of the buyer. We are producing these watches as the best possible price so that we can stay in business, and you can get an affordable, well crafted timepiece. We do not have the resources to offer a tax inclusive option.

Risks and challenges

We will do our absolute best to meet the dates/timeframes as set out in the timeline above. We do realise that even the most well planned campaign can have hiccups, so please be patient if something goes wrong. We will communicate as best possible to keep you informed and in the loop.

The photos above are of the prototype for the Peregrine. There may be small changes made to the watch for the final production.
