- A cutthroat game for multiple players
- Fit in your pocket and take up little table space
- No identical cards; cards are rarely strictly better
- No setup time; easy to introduce to non-gamers
In Victorian England, a group of university friends has entered into a pact, pooling their money into a common fund, with the last survivor of the group claiming the accumulated wealth. Years later, only the last few members of the group remain. Players will try to outwit and outlast the other members, who are doing their best to ensure their investment by any means necessary.
Tontine is recommended to be played with 4 players.
The players' goal is to keep their hand full while reducing the hand of their opponents. If a player has no cards in hand they are not out, but they have no means to defend themselves! The unfortunate player is eliminated when they are harmed by an Accident with an empty hand.
Each player is dealt five cards from the collective deck. Turn progresses around the table. A player's turn consists of an optional card draw (which you most likely will take) and the Play Phase. During the Play Phase, the active player must play at least one card. There is no limit to the number of cards played during your turn.
[forgive me, camera gods]
There are four types of cards. Accidents have a number showing how many cards their victim must discard. Schemes are blue cards, and once played they remain in play controlled by their player. Actions are green cards, and like Accidents, and used once and discarded. Several cards will have an additional cost to play. Lastly, Settings are unique states that remain in play and affect all players.
The goal for this Kickstarter project is to be able to print off a good number of copies and get them into the hands of some willing strangers. I hope to have the game printed during March. If there is interest in the game I will add some more unique cards beyond the present sixty.
Kickstarter Exclusive Cards:
Two fresh faces are yours to hire, exclusive Scheme character cards for Kickstarter backers! Enlist the likes of strongman Raging Abe Sandow, and crooked money-man Marley Vidal. They work hard at your side but watch out for the double-cross.
Risks and challenges
This is my first Kickstarter project. I expect any possible difficulties to arise with printing quality or speed. Shipping and delivery also promise to be frustrating for someone who has no experience. As this is a small project, I hope this to be a small speedbump.
I hope to attract enough interest to warrant spending additional time to create a deeper card pool.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
