Commit to the Kick
Don’t overthink it.
Commit to the kick.
For eighteen years, Alaric has lived under the cloying politics of family and his Clan community. His freshman year is supposed to be a chance to explore a world where Clan and his shapeshifting Talent isn't central to his life. But when his inner bear bursts forth during his first football game, endangering those around him, Alaric realizes that it’s not so easy to ignore his past, or his own internalized anger.
In his quest for anger management, Alaric begins to train in taekwondo, and makes new friends in both sports. He finds that he is creating his own small community, where Clan, Mages, other Talents, and even humans come together and build their own found family.
When Alaric receives news that something has happened to his brother Orson, he must return and deal with his Clan and his place in their world. He discovers that old prejudices are still strong between Clan and Mage communities, but that both may be in danger from a creature long thought to be only a legend. Alaric must figure out how to move forward and prevent a war and protect both his home and newly built communities, his found family with him every step of the way.
About this project...
Welcome to PHU is a web-based serialized fiction project which is available to read on both Tumblr and Pillowfort. Chapters are posted twice weekly, along with occasional Extras (short stories, character profiles, etc.). Commit to the Kick is the first novel of the Twinned trilogy, as well as the first novel of the project as a whole, and was posted in entirety between September 2016 and June 2017.
This project will produce compiled and professionally edited ebook and printed versions of the Commit to the Kick novel (along with some great rewards!). Once the project is complete, the ebook and printed version will continue to be available on Amazon. HOWEVER, by supporting the Kickstarter, if you pick a level with a physical copy of the book, you not only get your copy FIRST, I will personalize and sign it for you (if you wish) as well!
About the author...
Hey there, I'm Tris Lawrence, and I've wanted to be a writer since I was twelve years old (which was a very long time ago). My sixth grade teacher once told me that I'd never be a writer, and I aced a seventh grade "make your own book" project just to prove she was wrong. I've been writing ever since. Words are like breathing to me: often difficult thanks to the environment around me, but also critically necessary!
I have always wanted to create the kinds of books I loved to read, as well as the stories and characters I couldn't find growing up. Welcome to PHU is a huge overall project, with many novels being serialized online, and I often refer to it as writing fanfic for all the people who live inside my head. I am incredibly excited to be able to share this world and the diverse cast of characters with so many readers!
Representation is hugely important to me. Growing up in the 80s, I didn't see a lot of queer characters, and it took a long time for me to figure myself out (and that view continues to evolve). Welcome to PHU has the kinds of characters and relationships that I wish I had been exposed to sooner.
For the quickie bio: I'm queer, married, and a mom. I'm a sysadmin by day, and a writer by night. I started taekwondo as an adult at the magic age of 42, and am now a second dan black belt. I'm always busy and rarely get enough sleep.
The primary goal is to PRINT THE PAPERBACK of Commit to the Kick, as well as producing the ebook. This will include cover art, the roughly 165,000 word novel, a list of backers, and anything else that happens to get added in through stretch goals!
Now let's talk about those special reward levels...
Postcards: I have TWO postcards planned for all reward levels that include a postcard set. One will be a postcard version of the cover art (still being designed), and the other will be this adorable art by Nas of Alaric, Drea, and Corbin as wee shapeshifter children. I received this art as a gift and asked special permission to be able to share postcard prints with backers!
Buttons, Charms, & Stickers: There will be FIVE buttons created for backers who receive buttons. So far two have been drafted, as shown below. I'll be adding a sixth if we reach the $2,000 stretch goal, and art buttons based on the postcards if we reach the $2,700 stretch goal. Each button is 1.5" in diameter.
There will be one charm included in the set, of the PHU school shield (in Pine Hills University gold and purple!). This charm is still being designed; I'll share a picture as soon as I have it!
The sticker sheet will be a combination of one larger sticker with the PHU school shield (matching the charm) and one round sticker for each button design.
Limited Special Extras: There are three extra special limited levels where you can get (a) a PHU Taekwondo cinch sac, (b) Alaric's football duffel, or (c) a padded PHU tote! These bags are all very well designed and sturdy. The PHU tote is a copy of one I own for myself to use as my writing go-bag!
This Kickstarter will cover the cost of a professional editor to copy edit the book, the cost of cover art for the book, and the cost of printing physical book rewards. It will also be covering the costs of materials already purchased for rewards, and all future reward purchases.
All shipping costs will be an additional cost on top of your pledge. I am willing to ship internationally, and have selected a cost for each pledge level based on the estimated weight/size of the package, and averaged from a selection of different potential ship-to locations. I wish shipping were more economical and that I didn't have to pass the costs to potential backers. :(
I am already moving forward on working with the cover artist. I hope to have all art and edited material in hand, and be able to move forward with the production of the ebook, and sending all rewards and stretch goals to print by early December. This should allow me to begin fulfillment and ship to all backers in January. If there are any alterations to the timeline due to production of the necessary items, I will let backers know as soon as possible!
$2,000 - I will add a list of important characters and places to the end of the book!! Additionally, for all levels with buttons, a SIXTH button will be added to the set!
$2,300 - I will commission an additional wonderful piece of art from our amazing cover artist and all levels including a post card set will also get a mini poster of Alaric and some of his forms!
$2,700 - More buttons, and more book! Art buttons, based on the art from the postcards and cover, will be added to all levels which include buttons. Additionally, a mini anthology including three short stories (already posted as Extras on the Welcome to PHU site) will be created and provided to all levels that include an ebook!
Stories included in the mini anthology:
- accidental sparks and on purpose rainbows
- a little early morning conversation
- could always write a song about this
$3,000 - I will write a BRAND NEW short story to be included in the mini anthology and it will be chosen by Kickstarter backers! I will supply a poll to all backers with an ebook included in their reward to vote for their choice from a selection, and I will write the one selected by popular choice.
Risks and challenges
This is my first time producing a book! There are several positives that are already in place:
- The book is complete, and has been reviewed by an editor.
- Art for one of the two postcards has been completed.
- All buttons will be produced by me, so I do not need to worry about external production delays.
- I already have the cinch sacs, duffel, and tote.
Things that may be outside my control and may change the final dates:
- I am still working with my cover artist and do not have a definite time frame set yet.
- The charm and second postcard are in the process of being designed.
- The charm and postcards will need to be ordered, along with any additional externally produced stretch level rewards we may reach.
- I have not yet completed interior design for the book.
- If we reach the stretch level for a new story, that will need to be written and reviewed by an editor.
I have chosen a timeline to allow for all of these to be completed, and will stay on top of the design processes. While I am incredibly excited to be able to produce this book, some of the design processes are being completed by outside resources, and ordered from other outside resources, so I will be at their mercy when it comes to timing.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
