First off the primary goal ($3000) is to pay for music, sound effects, and additional art.

($5000) - Expanded Soundtrack:  If we make it to the first stretch goal, we will nearly double the length of the soundtrack.  Specifically this will include:

  • 2 tracks per zone instead of one
  • unique bonus stage track for each zone
  • unique boss track for each boss
  • 2 tracks per zone instead of one

($10000) - Extra Zone:  If we make it to the third stretch goal, we will have enough to hire an artist to make the assets for a fifth zone! I have additional scenarios in mind including locations, monsters, and bosses so I will put this up to a community vote!

($15000) - Online High Score Table:  If we make it to $15k, I'll set up a server to hold the top 100 all time and top 100 weekly scores for the main campaign and time attack modes!

When It Hits the Fan sets place in a fictional major city where four apocalypses are occurring simultaneously:

  • Zombie outbreak in the city
  • Robots (AI) from an underground mad-scientist's laboratory
  • Demons from hell running amok
  • Aliens invading from their mothership

It's up to our heroes, the mercenary brother and sister duo, to save the world with guns blazing!

When It Hits the Fan is an action arcade top-down twin-stick shooter designed with a classic arcade feel in mind.  Inspired by several 32-bit era arcade, SNES, and Sega Genesis games like Smash TV, Contra, Gauntlet Legends, and Zombies At My Neighbors.

When It Hits the Fan uses a traditional arcade style lives system with continues.  If don't think you can make it with 2 credits, you can also set the number of credits you want from the options menu on the title screen up to 9.

Each of the four zones currently feature 3 stages plus 1 bonus stage totaling 4 stages per zone.  The final stage of each zone also comes with a boss fight.  (This can increase with one of the stretch goals)!

Local co-op is also available now for the demo!

The game also has a sizable arsenal including: Pistol, Twin Pistols, Machine gun, Shotgun, Grenade Launcher, Flamethrower, Laser Pistol, and Laser Cannon!

Power-ups include: Force shield (reflect enemy projectiles or get hit once without losing a life), Trans-dimensional Cloaking Device (invincibility), Holy Crosses (protect and attack enemies around you).

What has been spent already?
I have put about $2500 or so into what When It Hits the Fan currently is, mostly paying for art and music.  A few hundred more went into starting Heartfelt Games LLC and the Greenlight submission fee.

This Kickstarter is to help me get the last bit I need to finish since I have run into a few things keeping me from using more of my personal funds to continue.

How will the Kickstarter Funds be used?
The initial amount raised will primarily go to our musician, ryunocore, to finish up the remaining music and sound effects.

The first stretch goal will help add some musical diversity:  Double the music for each stage type and unique music for each stage type's bonus stage and boss fights.

If we break even that goal, I will create new game modes like Bonus Stage Time Trial and Small Arena PvP as a bonus since my original investment will be even.

If we go even further over, I will add at least one new zone with a number of stages equal to the other zones.

When It Hits the Fan is not just coming to PC, Mac, and Linux, but also Arcade Machines!  Early in development Shreveport Arcade was looking for local Louisiana developers for their up-and-coming Arcade + Bar startup.

Shreveport Arcade:  Website | Facebook | Twitter

With Shreveport Arcade we have the ability to provide an arcade machine.  Both types of arcade machine are based off the same design.

machine prototype; button layout, board panels, and coin slots will be slightly different
machine prototype; button layout, board panels, and coin slots will be slightly different

They are 6 feet tall and 2 feet by feet wide/long.  The screen (replaceable) is 24 inches and supports 1080p (When It Hits the Fan's default resolution).  The controllers are replaceable as well as the individual buttons / joysticks in case of damage.  The whole thing weighs approximately 150lbs.  They run on Linux.

The controller (different than the above picture) will feature 2 omni-directional joysticks per player (2 players) and a player button for each player (P1 and P2) to join the game.  There will also be a button under the panel to allow access to the debug menu where you can set different options like volume and coins per credit.

Because of how it is set up, the machine can also receive game version updates.  We will provide the .jar file to replace the old one and instructions on how to do the update manually.  Internet based updates could also be in the future.

There are two arcade machine types available:

Personal Arcade Machine ($3000):

Personal Arcade Machines operate the same as the business version, but they do not come with a coin (Quarter or token) operated front panel and do not come with a business license which is required if you would like to profit off of customers using them.

Business Arcade Machine (e-mail us for pricing):

Business Arcade Machines are the same as Personal Arcade Machines, with the addition of a coin operated door in front and a business license allowing you to use the machine to generate income from people playing the game.

Send all business inquiries, business machine orders, and pre-orders to contact@heartfeltgames.org; title all Business Arcade Machine inquiries and purchase orders with 'Arcade' in the title.

Funding Complications:

Because a percent of each arcade machine sold goes to the machine makers (Shreveport Arcade) I am calculating the Stretch Goal Total amount as [Kickstarter Total] - ($3000 * [Machines sold]) = [Stretch Goal Total]. This is to ensure I can deliver on all promises made. (e.g. $10,000 - ($3,000 * 2) = 6,000 going towards stretch goals)

The reason for this is that we get $1700 for each Personal Arcade Machine sold and a little more for each Business Arcade Machine.

If this is unacceptable to you and affects your decision to donate, please bring it up to me or comment and discuss about it in the Comments section.

As far as how this effects the Kickstarter as a whole, if I only sell one arcade machine, it will put me over the stated goal, but under the amount I need to fund the game.  This won't be a problem, because that one purchase will be just enough to afford the bare bone assets left I need to finish and release the game.

Risks and challenges

I am a married dad with one child and a full-time job. The biggest risk in this Kickstarter is lack of development time, which I have been able to manage so far over the roughly two years that When It Hits the Fan has been in development. Even if delays happen, I will ensure this game is finished!

Another risk is the arcade cabinet version of the game. Shreveport Arcade is going to be making the arcade cabinet for the game so if anything were to happen to Shreveport Arcade's ability to make the cabinets I would have to look for another venue to do this or refund the purchases for that tier.
