About this project
Hello, we're KNiCE.
93.5 KNCE True Taos Radio is an independent, locally-owned, community-supported radio station bringing the diverse community voices of Taos, New Mexico to the airwaves and the world.
We're an FM radio station operating out of a 1978 Airstream Excella behind Taos Mesa Brewing. We went on the air in October 2014, and we're currently staffed with over 65 (amazing!) volunteer DJs -- some seasoned radio vets, some newcomers to the airwaves, and everything in between.
The response we're receiving, both from Taos and around the world, is effusive. Actual feedback so far has included this gem: "You folks are putting a great variety of sounds on the air, most of it intelligent, some of it deep. I'm sure I speak for a lot of listeners who are sick of hearing dumbed-down middle of the road bullshit." (We couldn't have put it better ourselves.)
Now, you may be thinking:
"That's awesome, but I don't live in Taos."
That's ok! KNCE is not only about our local listeners. We believe KNCE serves as proof that people can still create and revel in the small-batch, grassroots media they crave, even in the face of the ever-more-powerful winds of mass commercial media.
Plus, you can stream us online from anywhere in the world at truetaosradio.com! We're spinning fantastic shows with real live human DJs at the controls, every day from 7am - midnight with more programming being added all the time. Whether you're into blues, gospel, K-Pop, electronica, jazz, Americana, punk, new music, old music, or The Grateful Dead, we've got a show for you -- plus great talk, drama, and more.
So, how can you help us?
We got the station up and running back in October, but there are some major upgrades we need to make to ensure that we can stay on the air and improve our local reach.
First and foremost, we're moving to a new radio tower. This will improve our signal and boost our reach, critical for offering reliable transmission. This is a project which, with all the manpower and equipment and legal fees involved, clocks in at about $28,000 (the extra $4,000 in our baseline goal is reserved to pay fees, and as a "just in case" buffer).
Here is an estimated breakdown of our immediate project costs:
- $20,000 - Tower equipment & move
- $5,000 - Legal fees
- $1,500 - Engineering study
- $1,500 - FCC filing fees
Beyond that, there are many other things we'd love to be able to do to make KNCE the greatest little Airstream-radio-station in the world.
From upgrading all of our equipment, to going completely solar, to purchasing a delay button that will allow us to take your calls on air, the projects large-and-small which you can help us realize with just a few of your dollars are, well, virtually limitless.
We've been dreaming of stretch goals since we started this project, so please, help us test the limits of our creativity!
To keep things simple for our local buyers, we're asking you to add on any shipping costs manually when you check out. They're all listed underneath each incentive, but if you have any questions, don't hesitate to email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Taoseños, we're happy to arrange for pickup or dropoff of your incentives to save on shipping costs.

That One Incentive For Bands
Many of us are musicians, and we love to support local music. Have you ever wanted to record a few songs and have them broadcast live on air? What about experiencing the glory of recording while packed tightly into an Airstream trailer? One of our partners has a professional & portable recording studio plus plenty of fancy mics, and would love to host and record a live session with your band. We can adjust this package to your needs; email us at email@example.com if you want more information! Or just buy it. It'll be fun! We're not kidding. Even if you have a 12-piece band, we'll make it work.
What is this thing I hear about taking photos with dogs?
If you follow Walking Rain Productions' Americana show on Saturdays or Roots of Country show on Wednesdays, you may already be familiar with some of Stephen's twelve rescue dogs. Stephen has graciously offered to host a photo shoot with you and his dogs, which we'll post to LiveTaos.com to raise awareness about the importance of adopting rescue animals. Plus, we'll give you professional-grade prints of the shoot to use however you please.
We think the rest of the incentives are pretty well-explained in the right-hand column, but don't hesitate to email firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions!
And finally, THANK YOU.
Seriously. We love you. And whether you're listening to KNCE, pledging to this campaign, or both, we can't do it without you. So thank you for being a part of our project; we look forward to continuing to build this great station together.
Risks and challenges
As a community radio station operating with over 65 volunteer DJs out of an Airstream trailer on the Taos Mesa, we've been facing risks and challenges left and right since we dove into this project early last year. We've been doing our level best to tackle the risks and challenges as they arise, and look at each one as an opportunity to hold true to our vision for the station.
Currently, our greatest challenges arise from the financial and time constraints that come with trying to maintain a truly community-oriented media project of this nature. We've been operating off of a lot of volunteer hours and a bare-bones budget, and much hangs on the success of this particular arm of the venture to help everyone in the KNCE community feel confident that we're moving forward.
We're not exactly sure how long this tower move will take, as we've never done anything like it before and, honestly, you just can't accurately predict timelines when dealing with this amount of paperwork and bureaucracy. But we're extremely excited about the move, and the potential it will open up for KNCE's growth. And we feel confident that with your support, we can ensure that KNCE will be a staple voice in grassroots community media for years to come.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
