Far along the Eastern Frontiers of Kilforth, the malignant gloom has returned. The Ancients lurk in the shadows, conducting their terrible affairs once more. New, terrifying and pernicious creatures emerge from beyond the veil. But as new threats rise, new heroes gather their arms and their wits to meet them. From the frail safety of the ancient Shrine of Moneshoba, a small band of heroes ventures forth. Time is fleeting, the enemy numberless, and the Ancients voracious. Through the descending gloom, against all odds, the heroes must prove themselves worthy, lest their sagas fade into legend.
From the award-winning team behind Gloom of Kilforth: A Fantasy Quest Game - the sell-out game from Tabletop Gaming Magazine's Top Ten Games of the Year - and 1066, Tears to Many Mothers - the beautiful historical card game, nominated for a Golden Geek Award and an Origins Award and winner of a 2018 Best Art Award - Shadows of Kilforth: A Fantasy Quest Game is the ultimate RPG adventure experience in a dark world of Gothic high fantasy.
In Shadows of Kilforth 1-4 heroes must work cooperatively, or race against each other, to brave the perils of the gorgeous eastern wilderness of Kilforth. Explore ancient ruins, solve mysterious quests and survive terrible monsters. Unimaginable treasures and untold riches reward the bold, and horrific fates await the foolhardy.
We have actually already unlocked 4 new Encounters for Shadows of Kilforth! That's right - the unlocked stretch goals from the previous smash Kickstarter for Gloom of Kilforth spilled over into this campaign, so let's see what more life we can breathe into the world of Kilforth together as the campaign progresses.
As with Gloom of Kilforth: each new stretch goal game card unlocked means at least one beautiful, new, and unique piece of art!!
As with all of our games Shadows of Kilforth: A Fantasy Quest Game is Solo Friendly. Unlike other games you don't have to manage multiple heroes, you can play as a single hero without having to change the rules or reduce the experience, or you can play as a whole team of heroes should you choose to.
In Shadows of Kilforth players have 25 days to develop their powers and defeat an evil entity called the Ancient. During daylight, heroes travel Kilforth, overcome encounters, and gather rewards, whilst building an incredible story called a saga. Each night the land falls further into gloom, and if time runs out before the Ancient is defeated, Kilforth is engulfed in gloom and the heroes lose the game.

What's new in Shadows of Kilforth? What's the difference between Shadows and Gloom of Kilforth?
All of the content is new: new heroes, new sagas, new rewards, new encounters, new ancients, new locations, new everything, and a metric tonne of new art, but all using the same award-winning gameplay. This means Shadows of Kilforth is fully cross-compatible with Gloom of Kilforth - Simply shuffle the decks from Gloom of Kilforth together with those of Shadows of Kilforth to create one insanely enormous adventuring experience!
Designing this game has been very much an epic labour of love - Shadows of Kilforth is tailored for the fans of Gloom of Kilforth: A Fantasy Quest Game, whilst also being a brilliant starting point for those new to the world of Kilforth.
The various new gameplay elements are introduced through the existing mechanics, for example:
- Each Class type now has a Level 1 Self Defence Skill (e.g. 'Kung Fu'),
- A brand new REBEL Class with its own Skill tree,
- Many new Keywords to collect,
- New heroes can break game limits like starting HP,
- Ancients all function very differently,
- No level 4 skills that let you trade Influence/Sneak/Study for Fight,
- Heroes can 'Claim' certain encounters by placing their tokens on them,
- Location abilities and 'Gloom' effects on Location cards are more varied including Gloom that can benefit a hero - but with steep consequences,
- New location tokens (which can be used in Gloom of Kilforth too) randomise which locations the Night deck cards impact, so you never know where the gloom is coming!
- Also, the new game box comes with a freshly designed insert to hold all of the game cards more easily after they are sleeved.
There are three exciting expansion boxes for Shadows of Kilforth that follow the same format as the previous three expansions for Gloom of Kilforth. Pledge now to pick and choose from them as add-ons, or bundle them together by selecting one of the pledge tiers (e.g. "Hall In") to receive all three expansions at a deep retail discount!
"Shadows of Kilforth: Adventures" (RRP £25) is the gameplay expansion - a box of 54 unique cards! Adventures adds even more stunning content to your encounter and reward decks to enhance the variety and narratives of your journeys through the world of Kilforth - simply shuffle the extra cards into your game and you are ready to go. Pledge now to secure your copy!
"Dark Shadows" (RRP £12) is an alternative art expansion pack! Due to the overwhelming demand for and success of Dark Gloom, this is a set of 14 duplicate cards that already feature in the game but with original artwork that was either a bit too terrifying, or a bit too racy for a PG rating. These are duplicates of existing cards but with slightly different art - they are not required for play. If you purchase them you can either replace your existing copies with them, or just shuffle them into your games along with their existing counterparts.
The "Pimp My Shadows" (RRP £25) upgrade expansion pack: as requested by the Kilforthian community this set of pimped out components will include:
- 1 bigger velvet bag
- More Marble Effect Dice - 6 white, 6 black
- Race Art Standees of each gender for all Races from Shadows Of Kilforth and the Adventures expansion pack
- 4 Shadows of Kilforth Ancients standees
- 4 Rules Reference Player Aid Sheets
- Extra plastic stands
- 25 Replacement Larger (tarot-sized 120mm x 70mm) Shadows of Kilforth Location cards
How do I add funds to my pledge for add-ons?

The Large Neoprene World Map Playmat is an enormous (986mm x 576mm or 38.8" x 22.7"), gorgeously illustrated playmat (discounted by £10 from RRP!) that will hold all of the map location cards as well as the encounter and reward decks, and the ancient, ancient abilities, and night decks. The World Map Playmat accommodates the larger tarot-sized location cards (from the Pimp My Shadows and Pimp My Gloom expansions) OR the regular-sized location cards from the base game. Any gaming group would only require one World Map Playmat, as it will accommodate up to four heroes.
The individual Hero Playmats (608mm x 235mm or 23.9" x 9.25") are £15 each (discounted by £10 from RRP!) and come in 4 different styles, sumptuously illustrated with spaces for all the gameplay elements any hero might need. Purchase one per hero or collect all 4! Customise each playmat with your choice from the 4 following background images - you will be able to confirm your selections in the pledge manager:
Playing Shadows of Kilforth, each round (Day) you gain Action points equal to your current HP - you start with 4HP and you can level up to 8HP over the course of the game. Players take turns to play a single action (to reduce downtime). You have many actions to choose from:
- Move to a new location, draw encounter if one isn’t there
- Clear an obstacle to gain some loot
- Search an empty location for an encounter
- Hide, to avoid (or surprise) enemies and nasty weather effects
- Confront an encounter to collect that encounter’s keywords – explore a place, speak to (or battle) a stranger, defeat a quest
- Rest (in a safe, empty location) to regain 1HP
- Discover a rumour: bring a reward card – item, ally, spell or title - into play (a pick up and deliver type mechanic)
- Go to Market (in a town) – purchase and/or sell rewards and rumours and/or healing
- Regale – use gold and keywords to complete chapters of your ongoing saga and level up your hero
There are also various free actions (called 'deeds') that you can use on your turn such as fighting, evading or running from enemies, teaming up with other players against encounters, using fate to manipulate your successes, using skills/rewards/loot token effects, automatically overcoming encounters with various powers, using abilities to gain extra actions or effects, and assaulting the endgame bosses.
Heroes can exchange rumours, items, gold, spells and loot with each other whenever they share a location, and in the cooperative game you will need to in order for everyone to complete their Sagas. Heroes can also team up against encounters by combining their attributes for tests, but enemies will fight back against all heroes present with equal ferocity!
This is an intensely involved, thematic game taking about 45 minutes per player (once you're familiar with the rules), that delivers a full RPG experience in one session!

Super talented pianist and composer Francesca L Hall developed a piano sound track inspired by the themes of Gloom of Kilforth, which in turn inspired the designer of the game. Below is the album on YouTube, but all KS backers will be provided with links to download the full album too, and new tracks will be added for Shadows of Kilforth as well!

As many of you know, no one does art in games quite like Hall or Nothing Productions: there are over 250 unique and gorgeous images in Gloom of Kilforth, and Shadows of Kilforth is already close to that too - so let's see what aesthetically beautiful treasures we can unlock together!
To this end, we have an international team of mega artists working tirelessly to bring the world of Kilforth to life, led by Mikhail Greuli, Jose del Nido, Wietze Fopma, Hachimon, Alexande Elichev, Carlos Villas, Macs S, Roman Hodek, and The Creation Studio.
Please note: this Kickstarter is for the English language version only. There are no plans for a translated version of the game at this time.
We do not artificially inflate our game prices to subsidise shipping. Our shipping costs are simply in line with what we have to pay. Shipping will be charged after the campaign, and individually based on your location and the expansion selections you have made. We ship locally from our worldwide international hubs to insulate ourselves from any potential issues relating to Brexit.
Below is a link to the spreadsheet of our estimated untracked shipping costs per country, divided into 'Hall In' and 'Just Shadows' (base game only). We have capped the shipping prices at £30 for distant countries:
At Hall or Nothing Productions Ltd we are dedicated to delivering world-class, high quality, thematic games where quality cannot be compromised. Our first sell-out game, Gloom of Kilforth: A Fantasy Quest Game won a Game of the Year Award in Tabletop Gaming Magazine. Our second title, the historical card game 1066, Tears to Many Mothers was nominated for a Golden Geek Award and an Origins Award, and won a Best Art of 2018 Award, and a Must Play accolade in TGM. Our third game Lifeform is currently printing and soon to ship out to backers.
The continuing slate of scheduled projects for Hall or Nothing Productions is below, and there is plenty more in the pipeline too, if you'll have us!
Risks and challenges
This is now the fifth project for Hall or Nothing Productions. Thanks to the amazing backers who successfully funded "Gloom of Kilforth", and "1066, Tears to Many Mothers" and "Lifeform", and the "Gloom of Kilforth + expansions reprint", we have learnt a huge amount about the development process, design and file submission for the printers, and we will be working again in close partnership with our factories and fulfilment agencies to ensure the smoothest delivery of your games.
Production of the cards and game boxes will take a couple of months. This will only be possible once all the art for the game has been turned in. The base game and expansion art is complete already, so this will depend on how much stuff we unlock. It will hopefully take no longer than 6 months to finish printing, but experience tells us to factor in delays outside of our control.
The final hurdle will be overseas shipping and customs, and any delays which might be caused by this process will unfortunately be outside our control. But as with all of our campaigns if this project funds, you will get your games.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
