About

Relive the Greatest Siege in History!

A vendetta spanning decades reaches its terrible and bloody crescendo!

Suleiman the Magnificent's 30,000 strong armada descends on the 500 beleaguered Knights of St John and the defending people of Malta, with the express purpose of wiping them from existence, and changing the course of history forever...

1565, St. Elmo's Pay is an asymmetric, competitive, tactical card game, and successor to the award-winning 1066, Tears to Many Mothers (also available in this campaign), with which it is fully compatible. Each player, as either Ottoman Turks or Knights of St John, musters troops and resources to overcome the various obstacles in their path before the two armies clash in an epic siege over three frontiers on the tiny island of Malta: Birgu, Senglea, and the doomed fortress of Saint Elmo.

Players: 1-2                      Time: 30-40 minutes                       Ages: 10+

Every beautiful card in the game is inspired by a real person or event from the time. With a focus on quick, tactical play and a thematic re-imagining of the events of the time, the game is non-collectable, and there is no deck building required. Each player simply grabs their deck and shuffles, then play begins.

From the award-winning team behind Gloom of Kilforth: A Fantasy Quest Game - the sell-out game from Tabletop Gaming Magazine's Top Ten Games of the Year - and 1066, Tears to Many Mothers - the beautiful historical card game, nominated for a Golden Geek Award, an Origins Award, and winner of a 2018 Best Art Award - 1565, St. Elmo's Pay is the ultimate card game of war and history that recreates the Siege of Malta, "the Greatest Siege in History"!

In 1565, St. Elmo's Pay both players race against each other to overcome a series of asymmetrical historical objectives that Mustafa Pasha of the Ottoman Turks and Grandmaster Jean de La Valette of the Knights of St John had to overcome in order to battle each other at the Siege of Malta. The stakes are unbelievably high as the Turks are set to take on all of Europe and the fate and the shape of the settled world is in your hands!

1565, St. Elmo's Pay is an asymmetric, competitive tactical card game in the style of Magic the Gathering but non-collectable. In other words, whilst other theatres of conflict will appear in future stand-alone sets (which will be cross-compatible - see Future Plans below), you will receive the complete game in the box. Each player, as either the Knights of St John or the Ottoman Turks, musters troops and resources to overcome the various obstacles in their way before their two armies clash in the Siege of Malta.

1565, St. Elmo's Pay - the Great Siege of Malta is underway (with a couple of borrowed components)!

Gorgeous artwork complements sumptuous production values that will appeal to young people and seasoned gamers alike. Character names are taken directly from history and every card in the game is inspired by a real person or unit or event from the Great Siege of Malta.

To combine with other games in the series, such as 1066, Tears to Many Mothers, each player simply chooses a faction from any box to play as, so the Knights of St John from 1565 could battle the Saxons from 1066, for example!

In 1565, St. Elmo's Pay, each round players take turns to play cards and build their armies by deploying units, characters, tactics, attachments and playing events, all based on historical figures, weapons and occurrences that shaped the fateful siege.

But whilst racing each other to deploy the best army, players must also defeat a variety of historical objectives that their respective leaders had to conquer on their way to Malta, such as raiding each other's territories, or mustering their empire's war machine before the perilous journey to the tiny island of Malta.

The Great Siege of Malta is fought over three frontiers of troops (as the real battle was), represented by three Frontier cards: Birgu, Senglea, and St. Elmo. Players compete for Frontiers by trying to inflict damage on each one. Careful hand management is required for victory, and the first player to claim two Frontiers wins the game!

1066, Tears to Many Mothers was a runner up in the 2014 Golden Geek Awards, it was even nominated in the Origins Awards 2015 for 'Best Historical Board Game' - and 1565, St. Elmo's Pay continues its legacy whilst breathing new life into the system with all new and original art, all new characters, all new units, all new history, and featuring all new card abilities such as:

  •  Artillery: cannons that pound every enemy card in the same wedge!
  •  Bold: brave troops who steal enemy gun batteries!
  •  Commanders: more non-Leader characters who can move and organise your units to maximise your battlefield!
  •  Pulverise: sappers and gunners who directly attack wedges!
  •  Relentless: numberless troops that can be played from the discard pile!
  •  Resilient: sneaky Knights who can tire to avoid damage!
  •  Scholarly: tactical characters help sift your deck for the cards you need!
  •  Tireless: inexhaustible soldiers who drain enemy resources by milling their deck!

As with all of our games 1565, St. Elmo's Pay is Solo Friendly. The game and all the cards contained in it are fully playable solo, and an 'AI' bot with varying levels of difficulty for the enemy player has been developed in partnership with an expert team of solo players from the One Player Guild on boardgamegeek led by the great Paul Ibbs. Some cards even have solo specific effects too!

The Solo rules can be found here.

As many of you know, no one does art in games quite like Hall or Nothing Productions: there are over 150 unique and gorgeous images in 1066, Tears to Many Mothers, and 1565, St. Elmo's Pay is already close to that too - so let's see what aesthetically beautiful treasures we can unlock together!

To this end, we have an international team of mega artists working tirelessly to shine a light on this dark period of history, led by Arkadiusz Banaś, Jose del Nido, Piero Mng, Mikhail Greuli, and The Creation Studio.

We have kept 1565, St. Elmo's Pay under wraps from all except our dedicated play-testers, but since it shares the same game play as 1066, Tears to Many Mothers these videos should give you a great overview of how the game plays - and don't forget you'll also be getting 100% original new content!!

Shipping will be charged after the campaign, and individually based on your location and the expansion selections you have made. We ship locally from our worldwide international hubs to insulate ourselves from any potential issues relating to Brexit.

We would love to continue this series of history games and deliver all new theatres of conflict such as the American Civil War, Waterloo, Agincourt, The Spanish Armada, etc. We can even create fantastical conflicts between various eras, such as the medieval Normans Vs Waterloo-era Prussians! Your help in funding can make this a reality...

At Hall or Nothing Productions Ltd we are dedicated to delivering world-class, thematic games where quality cannot be compromised. Our first sell-out game, Gloom of Kilforth: A Fantasy Quest Game won a Game of the Year Award in Tabletop Gaming Magazine. Our second title, the historical card game 1066, Tears to Many Mothers was nominated for a Golden Geek Award and an Origins Award, and won a Best Art of 2018 Award, and a Must Play accolade in TGM. Our third game Lifeform has just been delivered to backers to rave reviews, and our fourth game Shadows of Kilforth has already gone to the printers - and yes, late pledges are still available!

The continuing slate of scheduled projects for Hall or Nothing Productions is below, and there is plenty more in the pipeline too, if you'll have us...

Risks and challenges

This is now the sixth project for Hall or Nothing Productions. Thanks to the amazing backers who successfully funded "Gloom of Kilforth", and "1066, Tears to Many Mothers" and "Lifeform", the "Gloom of Kilforth + expansions reprint", and "Shadows of Kilforth", we have learnt a huge amount about the development process, design and file submission for the printers, and we will be working again in close partnership with our factories and fulfilment agencies to ensure the smoothest delivery of your games.

As the game is complete, it will hopefully take no longer than 6 months to finish printing, but experience tells us to factor in delays outside of our control.

The final hurdle will be overseas shipping and customs, and any delays which might be caused by this process will unfortunately be outside our control. But as with all of our campaigns if this project funds, you will receive your games.
