About this project

Watch yer peepers!!
Watch yer peepers!!

WE ARE NOW FULLY FUNDED AND WITH 15 STRETCH GOALS ALREADY UNLOCKED!!!!

A promise has been made and broken, an evil omen is in the sky, a crown is at stake, and history is about to be made. It is April 1066 and Harold Godwinson, King of England, faces a deadly challenge from William the Bastard, Duke of Normandy. William believes that Harold has broken his solemn oath by claiming the English crown, and the matter must be settled by force, in a battle the likes of which Europe has never seen...

Will you rally your Saxon forces to defend the English crown from the invading Norman heathens?  Or will you muster papal support and have your Norman army crusade against the usurper Saxons?

Players: 1-2

Time: 30-40 minutes

Ages: 10+

1066, Tears to Many Mothers is an asymmetric, competitive tactical card game in the style of Magic the Gathering, but non-collectable.  In other words, whilst we do have plans for other theatres of conflict as future stand-alone sets (which will be cross-compatible - see Future Plans below), you will receive the complete game in the box. This 1-2 player card game, designed by Tristan Hall, follows the momentous events of that seismic year in English history. Each player, as either Normans or Saxons, musters troops and resources to overcome the various obstacles in their way before their two armies clash on the battlefield at Hastings.

Gorgeous artwork complements sumptuous production values that will appeal to young people and seasoned gamers alike.  Character names are taken from the Domesday Book and every card in the game is inspired by a real person or event involved in the Battle of Hastings. With a focus on quick, tactical play and a thematic abstraction of the events of the time, there is no deck building required, each player simply grabs their deck and shuffles and play begins.

Playmats!!

The playmat will be a beautiful full colour rendition of the hill at Senlac Ridge, mostly landscape, but with each army mustering on either side at the very edges, that fits both armies on it, and can be used in solo or two player mode, and it will be beautifully illustrated by Ania K.

To add a single roll-up playmat to your order, simply click Manage Your Pledge from the campaign page, and then increase your total pledge by £12.  This additional cost already includes any additional shipping costs.  If you want more than one playmat, just add a further £12 to your pledge for each additional playmat beyond the first.

The incomparable, world-class maestro Ania Kryczkowska, lead artist for the successfully funded Gloom of Kilforth: A Fantasy Quest Game, is back with us once more to bring the world of 1066, Tears to Many Mothers to glorious life in incredible detail.  Those who backed Gloom of Kilforth know that at Hall or Nothing Productions we deliver art like no other game does.  With nearly 300 utterly beautiful and unique images in Gloom of Kilforth, how many can we unlock for 1066, Tears to Many Mothers?

In 1066, Tears to Many Mothers each round players take turns to play cards and build their armies by deploying units, characters, tactics, attachments and playing events, all based on actual historical figures, weapons and occurrences that shaped the fateful day.

But whilst racing each other, players must also defeat a variety of historical objectives that their respective leaders had to conquer on their way to the Battle of Hastings, such as Harold having to overcome the Vikings at Stamford Bridge, or William mustering papal support before his perilous crossing of the channel to England.

The Battle of Hastings is fought over three Wedges of troops (as the real battle was), represented by three Wedge cards. Players compete for Wedges by trying to inflict 10 points of damage on each one. Careful hand management is required for victory, and the first player to claim two Wedges wins the game!

1066, Tears to Many Mothers was a runner up in the 2014 Golden Geek Awards, it was even nominated in the Origins Awards 2015 for 'Best Historical Board Game' - and it hasn't even been officially released yet.

The game and all the cards contained in it are fully playable solo, and an 'AI' bot with varying levels of difficulty for the enemy player has been developed in partnership with an expert team of solo players from the One Player Guild on boardgamegeek.  Some cards even have solo specific effects too:

Our resident musical genius, composer Francesca L Hall is back with another terrific soundtrack for the game that will be made available to backers for free.  This beautiful music is not gameplay-related but instead creates a sonic atmosphere to  immerse you in the world of 1066, Tears to Many Mothers.

As with Gloom of Kilforth, our good friends at GamesQuest will be handling international shipping worldwide. Shipping will be charged individually based on your location, with each game estimated to weigh less than 1.5 kg:

UK = £5

US = £9

EU = £10

Rest of World = £14

We would love to continue this series of Alt Wars games and deliver all new theatres of conflict such as Agincourt, The Siege of Malta, The Spanish Armada, etc.  You could even create fantasy conflicts between various eras, such as Normans Vs Ottomans!  Your help in funding could make this a reality...

Risks and challenges

This is now the second project for Hall or Nothing Productions. Thanks to the generous backers who successfully funded Gloom of Kilforth we have learnt a huge amount about the development process, design and file submission for the printers, and we will be working again in close partnership with our factories and fulfilment agencies to ensure the smoothest delivery of your games.

Production of the cards and game boxes will take a couple of months.
This will only be possible once all the art for the game has been turned in by the artist, which will hopefully take no longer than 6 months.

The final hurdle will be overseas shipping and customs and any delays which might be caused by this process will unfortunately be outside my control. But as with Gloom of Kilforth if this project funds, you will get your game.
