A quick social game for 4-7 people, Commies! rewards players that can bluff, negotiate with, or betray their comrades. As the leader of a political party, secretly and simultaneously commit political power and leadership each round in an effort to steal political supporters from your rivals. Successfully navigate a landscape of shifting alliances to seize control of the state as a part of the winning coalition. Will The Party Ever End?

Once you have selected a faction of famous or notorious communist leaders you will be assigned membership in either the state party (the Bolsheviks) or the people’s rebellion (the Mensheviks). Your membership is displayed in the party Tableau for all to see, and you are given 10 Supporter tokens to represent your social currency.
The hand you're dealt will empower you to disrupt the party Tableau, severing alliances and forcing players to wager more Supporters. Or you may decide that your efforts are better spent playing Power Cards and shifting the tide of public support to your side of the Tableau.
Each round players simultaneously play cards face-down. The shuffled cards are then revealed and resolved one by one, creating dramatic tension. After 5 rounds the Plot is complete and either the Bolsheviks or Mensheviks are declared winners, earning them supporters from the losing party.
Keep your allies close while driving a wedge between your adversaries. Be careful not to commit your greatest Power Cards before your position in the Party Tableau is assured or you might find yourself on the losing side of history.

Risks and challenges
Enthusiasm is a double-edged sword. On one hand it inspires us, fueling the creative process, but left unchecked it can also drive ambition to unrealistic heights. In our newest Kickstarter we come to the table with insight gained through successes and blunders.
Years ago, we published Smashball, a free-to-play multiplayer game on Steam. A bit after that, we published Ars Victor, The One-Hour Wargame using Kickstarter. Now, we’re coming back to Kickstarter for Commies! What will we do to make this a smoother and faster Kickstarter than Ars Victor?
We learned big expensive lessons from the mistakes we made on the Ars Victor Kickstarter, including but not limited to:
-Too many different backer levels
-Too many different deliverables that didn’t enhance the base game (T-shirts? Clocks??)
-Promises of future products included in backer levels
-Insufficient funds to print and deliver everything
-Art was unfinished and we didn’t allocate sufficient money or focus for things like box or card design
All of the above mistakes (and a few others) created a situation in which we were completely underwater financially, and delayed on delivery of most of what we promised. Backers didn’t receive the board game for roughly 12 months! Backers didn’t receive their extras, development on future Ars Victor expansions slowed to a standstill, and we had to go back to the salt mines so we could keep eating and paying our rent.
Fortunately we still had the enthusiasm for making great games. We buckled down, made some cash elsewhere, and funneled it into delivering on our Ars Victor pledge. The rest of the add-ons are shipping right now, and the future products promised by the Ars Victor Kickstarter campaign are finally getting the love and attention they require.
Additionally, the core game of Ars Victor has received rave reviews along with a solid 7.4 rating on BoardGameGeek!
We learned a lot about surprise costs, and we have more accurately forecasted the time and resources needed to deliver on the base kickstarter mission. We are keeping the backer levels and stretch goals very focused on the base Commies! game, so that we don’t suffer from ‘add-on sprawl’. The art is complete and ready to print, save for that of some great stretch goals we sincerely hope we hit. In fact, we’ve already printed a small number of copies with a print-on-demand manufacturer and will be shipping those out to the appropriate backers as soon as this campaign closes successfully!
Risk-wise, Commies! is a far more reasonable project than Ars Victor was. It has fewer components, less complex rules, broader appeal, and is easier to playtest. The art is more impactful. We hired an excellent art director with a ton of game experience, and we think it shows. We also hired a producer earlier this year, and staffing up has helped maintain momentum in a way that we couldn’t in the past with our other obligations.
You can trust us to deliver Commies! in a timely fashion. We have the backup funds, we have the staff, we have the infrastructure and supply chain. You can see the art and read the rules above.
