Why are we building this?
Making beautiful information graphics is hard work. Most data tools weren't built for design, and most design tools weren't built for data. I discovered this firsthand when I worked with nonprofit organizations, where we had lots of data about our social impact, but few resources to help us tell our story. Our team is democratizing data storytelling by making a powerful and easy-to-use web application.
We love the web. The web is a constantly changing, dynamic environment. Infographics should be dynamic, too. Infoactive's graphics respond to changes in data streams, or changes in a viewer's screen size. They move beyond static content and encourage interactive data exploration.
Sharing data should be fun. Whether you're writing an article for your newspaper, presenting campaign results to a client, showing your academic research, explaining your team's performance, creating progress reports, or making a new blog post, Infoactive is here to help you make data-driven stories.
So what does it do? Let's dig into the details.
Connect static or streaming data
By feeding live data into a Google Spreadsheet, your infographics will automatically update. You can also upload a CSV. You can work with a few simple numbers, or up to 10,000 rows of complex data.
We've tested some different live data options (such as Data Market, Twitter, and Poll Daddy APIs) with good results. In the future, we plan to support additional import options and even larger datasets. We will also develop an API so that you can feed your own streams of live data into gorgeous, interactive templates.
Build a story
Drag-and-drop charts, text, maps, icons, and interactive filters into your infographic.
We help you create better stories by programmatically looking at your dataset and determining which visualizations make sense. When you first upload a dataset, Infoactive will automatically draw a chart for you based on the contents of your data. For example, the platform will never ever create a pie chart with 30 slices. We're looking out for you, and doing our best to help you create stellar infographics.
Discover new insights
With Infoactive, your audience can dive into data and interactively explore information. You can visually analyze and filter by any parameter in your survey, simply by clicking on charts, buttons, and time sliders. Perform visual queries on complex datasets without doing math or writing code.
Customize your infographic
Choose between different themes and customization options to create infographics that match your taste or your brand. In the future, we'll develop options for you to create your own themes and templates. For the more technical crowd, we'll let you dig into CSS to create your own theme.
Share your story
When you're finished, you can copy the embed code and drop your infographic into your blog or site. We auto-generate a static image version for Pinterest and a few other places where interactive content isn't possible.
Respond to different screens
Our infographics are designed to scale. Infoactive delivers graphics that are uniquely optimized for both desktops and mobile devices. Touchscreen data exploration is a challenging problem to solve, but we're committed to crafting great mobile experiences.
Simplify the process
We've put a lot of thought into designing an interface that's easy to use. Data can be complex and confusing, but we want to make it as simple and painless as possible. Our team cares about user experience, and we're proud of the work we've done to simplify a very complex process.
Support data-driven stories
We came to Kickstarter because we know that this community is full of smart, creative, talented, and passionate people, and we want you to be a part of our development process. Every backer — from $1 to $10,000 — will get a special url for immediate access to our private beta. We hope that you'll give it a try, send us feedback, and help us build a truly amazing application.
We want Infoactive to be accessible and affordable for everyone, and we need your support to get there. Building Infoactive is a labor of love, and it's also expensive. We want this to be available to all of you and financially sustainable for our team. We're so grateful for your contributions, no matter how big or small.
How we show our gratitude
We really appreciate your support, and we're offering some exclusive deals for the Kickstarter community. Right now, the waiting list for our private beta has over 7,500 users. When you contribute to this campaign, you'll get a special url that lets you skip the line and try the app while it's still in progress. This url is posted as a project update on our Kickstarter page, which is accessible to all backers.
If you like what you see and believe in its potential, you can come back to Kickstarter and increase your pledge amount.
We have lots of prizes at killer early-adopter prices that you'll only get on Kickstarter.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for helping us make it happen!
A $10 pledge gets you a hand-stamped graph paper notebook that fits in your back pocket.
We met our goal with hundreds of backers in record time, thanks to all of you! Here are our stretch goals that will make Infoactive even more awesome.
Risks and challenges
Over the past year, our team has worked hard to understand our technical and market limitations and make sure that we understand the risks.
One of the big challenges in working with complex data is that, well, it's complex. Data comes in many shapes and sizes, and programmatically recognizing different data structures is quite difficult. It's tough to create a system that's intuitive and accessible for people who are not professional data analysts, but we're up for the challenge.
We're really proud of what we've been able to accomplish with just a few people in a short time frame, and we're confident that we can continue to deliver great results.
As is true with any big project, there are risks. But the rewards are absolutely worth it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
