What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

As a young startup Australian Product Design Studio, newly set up in Melbourne after gaining decades of Product Design experience from working passionately within the high-technology automotive and electromedical product design engineering industry, we are now excited to present to the world this first leg of our Kickstarter campaign-series for our XS Family Of Toys: 3D Jigsaw Puzzles. We believe our pride in our craft reflects in these products too.

STOP PRESS @ 1st February: We are delighted to announce that, last night, the team at iF International Forum Design GmbH, Germany, informed us that our XS Range of Toys (including these 3D Jigsaw Puzzles) has been awarded one of the industry-coveted iF DESIGN AWARDS 2017 within the Product Design discipline in the Babies/Kids category.

The 4X 3D Jigsaw Puzzle (Patent Pending), a medium-difficulty puzzle (targeting users aged 6 years and older, including adults), will be ideal for introduction of our interesting 3D Jigsaw Puzzles range* to the global markets. The puzzle challenge here is to construct a cube assembly out of its 16 identically-shaped and interlocking components. The identicalness (of the S-shape) between all the components of this 4X 3D Jigsaw Puzzle poses an interesting twist/challenge to the end-user. 

OK, soon to be proudly distributed globally, to be precise there.

* Introduction of the 3X puzzle (Patent Pending), the second type of 3D Jigsaw Puzzle, is now a stretch goal for this Kickstarter campaign. See details below at 'Stretch Goal'.

Solution # 2: Though this edited video below shows the start-to-end assembly of the 4X 3D Jigsaw Puzzle in just under 75 seconds flat, the assembly in real life would involve - particularly for new puzzle enthusiasts - few assembly trials, some reversals of game-plan and perhaps changes to the build strategy, adding to the time taken and to the challenge posed and, thus, multiplying the fun of cracking the puzzle. The inside of the 4X puzzle display packaging box and/or our website would anyway provide a solution (or two) for ready reference - just in case one needs it - to overcome the teething period, before taking off to cracking new solutions to the puzzle.

As is typically the case for plastic parts, the final production-level 4X components will be much closer in appearance to the CAD-rendered views (as seen on our webpage) than to the basic and rough-finished 3D-printed prototypes (seen in the video directly above).

The design of the 4X 3D Jigsaw Puzzle (with identically-shaped components, clickable interfaces and molded in thermoplastic to suit mass production) has emerged after evolving over months/years. More products (1X, 2X and 3X) were then further developed to form the XS Family Of Toys.

At a later stage, we also plan to introduce 5X and, possibly, 6X 3D Jigsaw Puzzles (both now under further development, with Patent Pending status). These will be larger and higher-difficulty puzzles and it would help if you, the backers, could comment here on your interest (or any lack of it) in such higher-and-higher-difficulty (and also larger/heavier/higher-priced) 3D Jigsaw Puzzles, for us to help gauge the market-interest and decide upon their introduction later on - again through Kickstarter.

The recommended ages for the toys from the two legs of our Kickstarter campaign-series (in line with Age Determination Guidelines ISO/TR 8124-8:2016):

The proof-of-concept and functional/design prototypes that we have made in various stages till now (see the Prototype Gallery above for more images) have helped us to play with and verify the overall design concept. The physical feel and user experience they provide is so valuable. For example, the evolutionary growth in the cube size seen between the prototypes in the image below is a consequence of such an user experience, so as to increase furthermore the robustness and life of the injection-mold tool.

However still, being 3D-printed in PLA (polylactic acid) material, such prototypes cannot fully replace the final injection-molded production parts. The flexible and clickable annular-snap-joint interface that (being an industry-standard detail, as commonly seen in pen-caps and snap-buttons today) works well in injection-molded parts with design-intent geometry in design-intent engineering/performance thermoplastic material, will not work in prototypes created by additive-technology processes (like 3D-printing, Stereolithography/SLA, Selective-laser-sintering/SLS or otherwise) in a relatively-inferior material (like PLA, epoxy, polyurethane or sintered nylon powder). Our experience, of decades, of working for multinational engineering companies and designing an array of high-volume precision parts & products in engineering plastics (mainly for the demanding global automotive engineering industry) then reinforces and complements our confidence in taking this verified design concept similarly to series production for final validation.

Here below is the latest-version Design Prototype of the 4X puzzle, 3D-printed in PLA, that has similar part-details, features and overall appearance as the current design concept ...

Just to repeat: As is typically the case for plastic parts, the final production-level 4X components will be much closer in appearance to the CAD-rendered views (as seen on our webpage) than to the basic and rough-finished 3D-printed prototype (seen directly above).

A) 3D/MULTI-DIRECTION INTERFACE: Engage from multiple possible directions

Each of these 3D Jigsaw Puzzle components can engage with its mating components on multiple sides. This allows trials of all possible positions/orientations of engagement between mating components, as one progresses through solving the jigsaw puzzle.

B) CLICKABLE INTERFACE: Click with a snap  

These jigsaw puzzles will have a distinctively positive-interlocking and audibly-clicking interface (known as an 'annular snap joint' in the fascinating-enchanting world of engineering). Like the engagement of the snap-button-halves of a quilt cover. Or like the snap-fit oft seen for a ball-point pen (biro) body with its cap. Example detail shown below. This seemingly-humble and tiny detail forms the crux of the component design so as to get all the key parameters (like yield strain and secant modulus of the plastic material, size of undercut, radial deflection, wall thickness and diameters, lead and return angles, mating and un-mating forces, circumferential/hoop strain and stress induced, molding feasibility) correct for achieving an elastic plug and an elastic socket that are producible and usable to a consistent quality. (Finer and final details of the part detail geometry and the plastic material grade choice remain our proprietary information.)

This snap-fit allows building a 3D jigsaw puzzle that is robust and sturdy (and not unwieldy) during/after assembly, thus not allowing itself to crumble apart at a slight nudge.

C) LONG-LIFE INTERFACE: Keep assembling ... and dismantling ... and assembling again

A diligently-selected and higher-end engineering/performance thermoplastic - of high strength/toughness, free of harmful additives - and a carefully-designed part geometry will aid achieving a long usable life for this clickable interface.

This allows assembly and dis-assembly of these jigsaw puzzles repeated many times over and over, without inducing plastic material fatigue/relaxation or degrading the feel of the snap-fit.

D) CLEVER INTERFACE: Stuck with an interference with the mating part? Just simply flip the piece around by 180° to avoid it

The socket detail of a part will never interfere with another plug or socket detail of its mating part. However, the plug detail (though not interfering with the socket detail) will interfere, if positioned to mate with the plug detail of its mating part.

If one faces such a no-go situation while assembling the 3D Jigsaw Puzzle, then one has to simply flip one of the two mating parts by 180° to change the interfering plug detail to a socket detail and, thus, increase one's chance of avoiding interference (subject to the surrounding parts).

E) IDENTICALLY-SHAPED COMPONENTS: The identicalness in shape between all its sixteen components adds an interesting twist/challenge for the user while solving the 3D Jigsaw Puzzle. It's like the four seasons ... the same nature all through the year, just the colors change. (OK, admittedly, that is not really a good analogy. But we tried.) So then, which component one next picks does not matter for resolving the 4X puzzle, but how/where one next fits it does.

To commemorate our first-ever crowdfunding project and to express our gratitude towards our supportive backers community, we will bring out a LIMITED EDITION reward of the 4X 3D Jigsaw Puzzle, with all its 16 components being in a single-color (of the respective backer's choice - all red or all yellow or all blue or all green). This special *Limited Edition* reward is also a part of the new Kickstarter 'Make 100' initiative and will not be repeated after this edition is exhausted during the crowdfunding project (e.g. will not be sold on retail stores shelves). The outer face of its display packaging box will carry a special commemorative 'Limited Edition' sticker and its inner face will carry special personal thanks to the respective individual Backer from the Lead Designer/Creator of the 4X 3D Jigsaw Puzzle.

The planned time-frame for the 4X 3D Jigsaw Puzzle commercialisation:

Apart from being a children's toy, this 4X 3D Jigsaw Puzzle prototype (even if of a rougher finish than the as-projected final production version) has proved to be also a stress-buster for us at work. Keep fidgeting with it to help say goodbye to stress-anxiety.

What's life without color ...

Well, not really so ... visualization sans color and sans opacity too is interesting ... just for some fun and some variation ...

In anticipation of a successful Kickstarter campaign, we have setup a singular stretch goal: Commercialisation / introduction of the 3X 3D Jigsaw Puzzle (Patent Pending).

This 3X 3D Jigsaw Puzzle, a lower-difficulty puzzle, represents a startup or entry-level 3D Jigsaw Puzzle, better-suited for relatively-younger users (aged 5 years and older, including adults). The puzzle challenge here is to construct a cube assembly out of its 9 identically-L-shaped and interlocking components. If and when this stretch goal is reached within 30 days of this campaign launch, new rewards would be added to offer the 3X Puzzle separately to our backers.

A brief comparison between the goal and the stretch goal for this first leg ...

Exception: The special reward of 'LIMITED EDITION' 4X 3D Jigsaw Puzzle will be in single-color, as described under the heading 'Limited Edition' above.

You may be also interested - equally or more - in another Kickstarter campaign of ours, soon to be launched here on this platform, for commercialising 1X (and, possibly, also 2X) 3D Construction Toy-bricks (Patent Pending), the 'Creativity Unleashed' Leg # 2 of the XS Family Of Toys. These toy-bricks engage and click into each other from all six directions (similar to the 4X 3D Jigsaw Puzzle components), thus allowing building robust 3D toy-structures of forms/shapes not possible with the conventional 2D Toy-bricks available today. (See image below.) You may want to back these innovative toys too (targeting users aged 4 years and older, including adults), once launched. We will keep our backers here posted on this.

We opt to run the two Kickstarter campaigns in succession, one soon after another (rather than simultaneously), so as to better utilize our energy and resources.

Interestingly for you, the 4X (and, if introduced, 3X/5X/6X) 3D Jigsaw Puzzle components will engage/interface with these 1X (and, if introduced, 2X) 3D Construction Toy-bricks too, being part of the same XS Family Of Toys and having similar features/details/interfaces, to help add to the fun of constructing 3D and 2D toy-structures and to aid understand the interaction between different shapes. This link to a webpage of The Genius Of Play, an e-newsletter brought out by Toy Industry Association, Inc. (the not-for-profit North-American toys trade association that represents businesses accounting for an estimated 90% of the U.S. domestic toy market) emphasizes the six benefits of play - physical, emotional, social, cognitive, creative and communication - that help develop critical lifelong skills amongst children.

This link to an excerpt from a book (Early Childhood Education: Birth - 8: The World of Children, Families and Educators, 2008 edition) by two early childhood educators, Amy Driscoll and Nancy Nagel, elaborates on The Value Of Play and the role of children's play with toys in they being able to solve problems and make decisions in a safe situation, gathering / processing information, being able to practice/develop social skills and developing a sense of competence amongst them. According to this excerpt, play helps children develop and learn.

  • The intellectual property behind these toys (1X, 2X3X, 4X and any variant later introduced for the XS Family Of Toys) has been protected through robust and watertight patent applications well-drafted by Australia's market-leading & premier Patent Attorneys firm. These applications and other related intellectual property protection applications seek exclusive rights worldwide for us, as the inventors, for commercialisation of the design concepts behind these 3X/4X 3D Jigsaw Puzzles and 1X/2X 3D Construction Toy-bricks (with or without any variation) in any form - including physical or digital.
  • Each 3D Jigsaw Puzzle will come fully assembled and in its own individual cardboard display packaging, high-quality offset printed in multicolor, suitable for presenting as a gift.
  • These toys will be available, as Kickstarter rewards, to our backers based in twelve countries/regions listed below. Since we are particular about independent/third-party testing & certification of these products for compliance to the applicable toy-safety standards before sending them out to our backers, we have to limit the number of countries/regions we can ship the Kickstarter Rewards to, so as to contain the test program within practical and achievable limits (even if this step impacts the crowdfunds generated for us). We, of course, do intend to eventually and progressively (extend our patents protection coverage and) sell these products in markets/countries/regions many more than the ones listed below. However, that business growth/expansion has to come during the immediate next stage.
  • The overall project cost includes: Multi-cavity high-complexity precision injection-molding tool (including molding trials) per unique part, Third-party testing for certifying compliance to international safety-standards, Staff-salaries, Consultants & contractors fees, Ongoing patent & other IP protection fees, Kickstarter platform & third-party transactions-processing fees, Product- and transport-packaging, Shipping of rewards, Accountant/bookkeeper fees, Marketing consultant fees, Legal fees, Promotions, etcetera.
  • Finer-level design changes to some parts (including finer details, inner ribs, edge radii, colors/hues**, overall size***, etcetera) may be further necessary before the tool-making starts, as the part design gets continually fine-tuned and as the products are developed on an ongoing basis and as more suggestions from toolmakers/molders are taken onboard to improve-optimise the part/tool design. For this same reason, some finer-level details of the components may be older/different in some of the images/videos above too.
  • **Though the colors shown in the images here are, largely, basic and intense-bright primary colors, we are still toying (pun intended) with the concept of using complimentary and lighter pastel tints/shades of tertiary colors, perhaps less vibrant-saturated but more soothing to the eyes, for the final injection-molded parts. As per American color researcher-consultant Faber Birren, cooler and softer colors are better for mental activity. Careful consideration is also needed for the grayscale values of the final colors, so as to aid color-blind users. Here below are some of the alternate color possibilities at this early stage. (The representation of these colors may not be accurate on your screen and will be an approximation.) Please comment with your favorite four colors from these and, also, suggestions for any other alternatives. Your feedback will be one of the key inputs to our decision. The 4X (and 3X, if introduced) 3D Jigsaw Puzzle components will be produced in only one standard, as-we-finalize, set of four colors (and not in all sixteen colors as below). The final decision will be ours, based upon the multiple factors and inputs involved.
  • ***The size of the main sub-body (i.e. the basic cubelet element, excluding the snap-fit detail) of the 4X puzzle components, as per current design, is about 18 mm (0.71"). This size is determined by striking a balance between the 'pixel' resolution of the 3D toy-structure built with the 1X toy-bricks from the XS Family Of Toys that this 4X puzzle too is part of (the smaller the cubelet size, the better) and securing long life of the mold tool (the larger the overall size, the better: helps achieve robustness for finer tool details like standalone tool-steel 'fingers' and shut-offs). Hence, the final size of this cube-shaped sub-body element may shrink/grow by upto 2 mm, in either direction, during the final design optimization process before starting the tool-design and tool-making processes. The size of the 4X component will shrink/grow correspondingly.
  • This deceptively-simple-looking product has substantial part- and tool-complexity. Resolving this demands a deep understanding of a diverse array of fields listed below and more, to grow in the fiercely-competitive global markets today for toys. Our decades of working directly in R&D departments within the global design/engineering industry immensely helps us here.   • The goal and the pledge amounts, both, have been set to allow for: (a) high tooling costs (due to the complexity of the six 'undercut-in-undercut' details per component), (b) high component costs (due to use of higher-end engineering plastic with higher % Yield Strain to allow repeated assembly-disassembly cycles) and (c) high international shipping costs (for delivering individual rewards to our backers).

  • The costs for shipping the rewards, to our backers, through mail/courier are shown separately on top of the Rewards Pledge amounts. However, any additional costs (including but not limited to import/custom duties, value-added taxes (VAT), tariffs, customs fees, other taxes, etcetera as applied by the local governments/authorities) will be payable directly by the backer to either the authority or the mail/courier service, as required.

  • In order that these innovative-creative toys reach maximum number of backers, this project is being simultaneously run on two crowdfunding platforms in a complementary manner. More than adequate resources have been allocated to manage and support both campaigns.

Risks and challenges

Challenges Met and Risks Mitigated:
As often observed for any commercialisation project for a new-concept product, this project too started with its own inherent risks. With all the high complexity of a multiple-side-cores-with-two-staged-actions tool (which, for the technically inclined, is required due to the 'undercuts within undercuts' detail on all six sides of the molded part), what if the tool and the parts are either not feasible at all or are not viable/producible at market-acceptable costs? What if the material or the part fails? What if the market rejects these toys? However, though this is our first Kickstarter campaign, our decades of product design experience from working within the engineering industry, the due-diligence activities we have painstakingly undertaken for this project (including design calculations, prototypes building/testing and substantial research to verify and market-test the design concept), our utmost attention to finer and final detail, our detailed and involved discussions with potential suppliers (expert tool-makers/injection-molders from the high-precision high-volume plastic parts industry), our plan to arrange for internal testing (for validation/checks of the design concept and of the production processes) and for third-party testing (to certify compliance to various toy safety standards) - all this together is projected to help mitigate these risks to a low and manageable level. In short, we know what we are doing. We hope this instills confidence and trust in our backers that we will deliver what we say we will and when we say we will. We promise here that should unforeseen issues still crop up, we will handle them with full transparency and professionalism towards you, our backers.

Current Residual Supply-chain Risk:
We would take utmost care in selecting a professional, experienced and efficient supply chain. However, in spite of the best efforts-care and due to factors beyond our direct control, sometimes things could get delayed or delivery issues could come up. This is the very reason we have added a buffer margin to the time-frame. We will use all our experience, expertise and resources to resolve any issue and minimize the impact of adversities, if any.
