About

Problem

Academic institutions constantly search for professionals and researchers to present their work to their students and staff. Seminars play a crucial role in students training--- making it possible for them to have real life hands-on approach to their careers and academic goals. However, the cost of organizing seminars is extremely expensive especially when paying for invited speaker’s travels and accommodation.

Also, several organizations constantly find it hard to recruit speakers to their seminars and conferences. They spend money and time scouting for speakers which causes waste and also increases the operational cost for these organizations.

Currently,

  • Only 31% full time students in 2-year institutions graduate in 3 years.
  • Only 60% full time students in 4-year institutions graduate in 6 years.
  • Graduation rate lower among minorities and part time students.

For doctoral students, graduation rate by academic field is:

  • Masters degree - 61%
  • Professional degree - 77%
  • Doctoral degree - 76%

Cost associated with low graduation rate

  • Cost universities about $16.5bn annually when students drop out of school.
  • Parents lose money when students stay longer to complete college.
  • Students who drop out have diminished future prospects due to high loans, low job fit and high unemployment.

Solution

To improve the student retention and graduation rate, universities organize seminars. Colleges that organize seminars show an increase in student retention by about 70% compared to colleges that do not provide this crucial resource.

Seminars allow students to learn from experts.
Seminars allow students to learn from experts.

Seminars work by:

  • Improve academic performance.
  • Broaden the scope of student learning.
  • Improves stress management.
  • Understand the demands in a particular field.
  • Understanding deficit in knowledge.
  • Procedural improvement in a field.
  • Critical Thinking, intellectual flexibility and independent thinking.

Student prefer the face-to-face seminars because it encourage them to:

  • Practice Listening
  • Questioning theories
  • Stating and defending claims
  • Favor dialogue
  • Consider alternate point of view
  • Promote student social skills through discussions and celebrating diversity.

However, the cost of organizing seminars is quite high. An average department will spend $3000 to organize monthly seminars (mostly for travels and accommodation). This cost (yet another problem) has limited how many seminars are organized in many colleges especially in minority and under-resourced institutions.

Our solution

To provide a cost-effective solution to this problem, we built TrickleS, a platform that connects researchers and professionals to academic institutions. The platform significantly eliminates two major costs (travel and accommodation) associated with seminar organization. When a professional adds a seminar to their personal travel itinerary, it saves the institution the cost of paying for her travels and accommodation. In addition the platform enables academic institutions to find local professionals to present their work more efficiently. This way academic institutions can acquire excellent speakers at the fraction of the cost.

We connects experts and professionals to universities and colleges:

 Experts:

  • Faculty and staff
  • Postdoctoral Fellows
  • Graduate Students

Professionals:

  • Lawyers
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Policymakers
  • Engineers

Trickles Goals:

  • TrickleS allows less endowed institutions to attract the same caliber of professionals as well endowed institutions.
  • Also, developing countries can now invite renowned professionals which was harder before this platform.
  • several organizations constantly find it hard to recruit speakers to their seminars and conferences. TrickleS bridges this gap.
  • Finally, professionals who would like to give back to the community can now be able to do so.

TrickleS resound with professionals and academics
TrickleS resound with professionals and academics

Why do we need the funds

We have built a beta version of the platform that we are testing. We have registered professionals on the platform in 24 countries. Registered professional includes fields such as the Sciences, Engineering, Business, Law and Arts. We have successfully matched professionals to other institutions globally.

Funds will go to improving the platform while building an app that is interactive. Your support will allow us to bring experts and professionals to every college, university and institution in the world and improve students' learning experience. For more information, https://trickles.org/

About me:

I am a geneticist by training. I did my undergraduate training in Ghana, doctoral degree in Alabama, USA and postdoctoral training in Boston, USA. During the course of my education I have seen a global effort to make quality education accessible. For instance there is a drive towards making journal publications free and open-access to every student and faculty in the world. However, one area that is still under-developed is affordable access to quality professional seminars for students in colleges and universities. Through TrickleS, we are bridging the gap.

Risks and challenges

Professionals and researchers traveling should be aware of this opportunity so we would have to improve our social media awareness.

Institutions should be aware of TrickleS to tap into the rich resource available in their cities. They should be able to provide us with the vacancies in their departments for local or visiting professionals to schedule. We are constantly talking to institutions in various regions.

Long-lasting design

TrickleS reduces carbon footprint due to air and ground transportation as professionals can consolidate their travels. Instead of making multiple trips to the same city for holidays and seminars, they can do so in one trip.

Environmentally friendly factories

The platform allows a professional to give multiple talks in one city. This consolidates his trips and efficiently reduces waste.

Sustainable fulfillment and distribution

Since we connect professionals and researchers to institutions through our platform there is little waste generated in the matching process.
