Taking photos under low lights on your iPhone is a challenge. Without a way to properly light your scene, photos turn out looking too dark or unevenly lit.
There have been a few devices that have tried to make lighting better on your phone, but none of them compare to professional flashes or strobes.
Designed specifically for iPhones, Tric enables photographers to use professional speed lights or studio strobes with their iPhones.
Tric is incredibly easy to use: just attach a flash unit to Tric, turn it on, start the app and start shooting.

We developed a patent-pending technology to perfectly synchronize the iPhone camera and external light source wirelessly.
It took quite some time to figure out how iPhone camera is capturing its images, and calculate the various transmission time spent in protocol layers. At end we found a solution to perfectly synchronize it with a flash unit at remote.
For hardware, we use existing Bluetooth module to reduce the development risk and cost. We closely worked with our vendor to develop custom firmware using high resolution timer for precise synchronization.
The prototype result is promising. It encourages us to start a Kickstarter project to make things real. Now photographers will be able to freely design their own lighting layout and create stunning visuals with their desired lighting sources.
Unfortunately, Tric has a couple of limitations.
- Shutter speed is limited to 1/30 seconds.
We knew this sucks, but it is the fastest we can achieve with current iPhones. Unless Apple decides to make changes to their image sensor sub-system, we are constrained by this.
- X-sync only; no TTL
This means that output power needs to be controlled on the flash unit side, and we may need to try several shots to obtain the perfect exposure.
- iPhone only
Due to our limited resources, we plan to only support iPhone 5S, 6, and 6 Plus. Currently we have no plan to support Android.
Yes, these limitations mean that Tric is not for everyone. But we are confident that those who are serious about using iPhone for photography, and enjoy their own lighting arrangement will love Tric.
What we have done
We have built our prototype, and successfully captured first-time-ever iPhone photo with complete flash exposure from wirelessly connected speedlite.
We have also finished electronic design and 3D design.
What the fund will be used for
While we can proceed most of the tasks on our own, we need your support to reach the funding goal for mold production.
Then we will be able to proceed these steps to complete the project.

* Please note that Tric currently does not provide high-voltage sync protection, and is not recommended for flash units that have any more than 6V.
Free app to connect to single Tric device will be available with product delivery. Paid app with more advanced features, including the ability to connect multiple Tric devices will be available at a later time.
Risks and challenges
-- Change of iPhone image capturing implementation
The iPhone may change the process of how it captures images in the future, which might reduce the value of our product or even render it non-functional.
This is a challenge we are prepared to face, but we cannot predict in what ways and when the iPhone software and/or hardware will be altered.

Tric will be manufactured in Taiwan, and a member of our team will be on site to manage orders and handle production control to ensure the quality of our product matches expectation. We will work directly with the manufactures to reduce this uncertainty during the production process.
