Did you miss the Kickstarter? Check here for how to get Grim World!
Grim World is a dark fantasy supplement for the Dungeon World and Fate Core systems. It's full of 6 new class playbooks, full color character illustrations, and more!
Backing at any reward level gets you instant access to 6 class playbooks! Check the Updates tab for the download. We'll be taking all of your feedback until early October to make Grim World even better! Then, if successful, Grim World will be expanded and finished with high quality art and printed in a limited edition, full color books!
Already a backer? Check this post for instant access.
Check out a free preview of the classes:
The physical edition will be a HARDCOVER, full COLOR, 8.5"x11" book with an estimated page count of 150+ pages. This is a limited edition run and every single book will be personalized by the creators (that's us!). Personalization means we'll sign it, doodle on it, write custom moves, draw mustaches on all the art, or otherwise deface it as much or as little as you want.
All backers that pledge at $15 or more, get the digital version of the book. This includes all of the content in the physical book, but in digital formats. You'll also get the revised playbooks improved from all the playtesting feedback we received (version 2 will go out soon). We'll also be doing a bunch of separate PDFs to make important content easy to reference and print. So here's the breakdown of what we have locked down so far. Any time you see a plus "+", that means there's a chance there will be more because of stretch goals or additional community contributions:
- 7+ Dungeon World class playbooks
- 6+ Fate Core classes, with theme descriptions, aspects, and stunts
- 15+ Playable Species with custom moves, free aspect invokes, and portrait illustrations
- Grim World setting tips and GM philosophies
- The Hunt faction details about their structure, hidden caches, lodges, hunting trophies and contracts
- 8+ DW style Compendium Classes to flesh out your characters
- 7+ GM Fronts/Arcs for building a campaign
- Grim World locations and the Grim World Location Builder (roll some dice for an instant adventure location)
- 20+ Monsters with descriptions, instincts, weaknesses, and portrait illustrations
- Loads of gear including new magic items, cursed items, and a Cursed Item Toolkit (to build your own cursed magic items)
- 36+ (yes, 36 and counting!) additional Death Moves, including all standard DW classes, Inverse World classes, and tons of other custom classes (written by Jacob Randolph and other awesome contributors from the community)
- Full page class illustrations, spot illustrations (for species, monsters, magic items), and additional icons and sketches, all to make Grim World come alive!
Deanna's been working hard to finalize the look of the book. Here's another example page of some monsters, complete with art mockups:
Enter a dark, deadly world where civilization barely survives, full of gruesome beasts, dark plots, and a sprinkle of cosmic horror. With white knight naïveté quickly leading to a horrendous death, the closest thing to a guardian is the Hunt, with their one and only law: Do less harm than good, or you will be hunted. Hunters gain access to hidden caches and lodges, where they can find new contracts, cash in hunting trophies, and occasionally feel safe for a few hours.
As a player, you’ll learn quickly that, in Grim World, everything has the +Messy tag. And a nasty appetite. Lucky for you, all classes come with powerful Death Moves, so if and when you die, it will be meaningful and always memorable. As a Game Master, it will be your job to bring this sinister, perilous world to life. You’ll want to keep 3 additional GM Principles in mind:
✴ Every village has its secrets, ✴ Every beast has its weakness,
and ✴When a player dies, the world trembles.
- The Battlemaster, tactical maven, gambit expert, “I have a plan.”
- The Channeler, conduit to raw magic, elemental summoner, "I am the gateway."
- The Necromancer, corpse crafter, hexbody, “RISE!”
- The Shaman, totem carver, spirit binder, “Can you not hear the Murmur?”
- The Slayer, walking arsenal, addict, “I’ll sleep when you’re dead.”
- The Templar, red hot wrath, holy inquisitor, “Take penance, or know vengeance.”
This is some of our progress on the art for the book so far, more to come after the kickstarter (and possibly during)!
Get in the book: Boldlittle Caricatures!
Want to be IN the book? Here's your chance! If you choose the CARICATURE or EPIC CARICATURE reward level, Deanna will create a Boldlittle in your image! You get to decide what you look like and what you wield! All the caricatures will be inside the book (both the final PDF version and the limited edition physical book) for everyone to see!
Curious to see what they look like? Well here's a few people you might recognize! Check out these epic caricatures of Sage LaTorra and Adam Koebel, designers of Dungeon World! And the ever infamous Fred Hicks, one of the creators of Fate Core!
(Hit!) $8,000 - Ancient Horrors (Monster Pack) + Doom Approaches (Fronts/Arcs)
Find out what stirs in the somber depths of Grim World. In addition to the already included monsters and example GM fronts/arcs, when we hit this goal, we'll add even more to the book! These will likely have a tinge of cosmic horror. Let us know if there's something specific you'd like to see!
(Hit!) $10,000 - Grim Location Builder (GM Toolkit)
In addition to the example locations included in the book, this toolkit will allow GMs to instantly create a new sinister location for their campaigns! You'll be able to pick and choose exactly what you want or roll some dice and leave it up to chance. Remember: In Grim World, every village has its secrets.
(Hit!) $12,000 - Cursed Magic Items
In addition to the new gear included in the book, this stretch goal will unlock a pack of cursed items. These might be items of great power that have calamitous side effects, or seemingly mundane objects that you just can't manage to rid yourself of. We'll also throw in a GM toolkit with suggestions on how to make your own!
(Hit!) $14,000 - More Playable Species/Races
In addition to a set of Grim World versions of the standard races (Human, Dwarf, Elf, etc.), this stretch goal will add a set of more unique playable species. For an example on what to expect from the book, check out an early draft of the Drakarn species (you may recognize them from the Battlemaster illustration):
(Hit!) $16,000 - Compendium Class: Hunter
The Hunt is one of the few organizations left in Grim World that fight back against the darkness. Someone suggested we expand it into a full compendium class and we loved the idea (thanks Brandon!) . The Hunter will start as an initiate of the Hunt, but over time they'll gain access to powerful abilities and resources. Interested? Sign up in a Lodge, if you can find one! They won't question your methods, just don't forget the Hunt's one and only law: Do less harm than good, or you will be hunted.
Those looking for more compendium classes need only look in the Community Contributions section of the book. We've already gotten a ton of great submissions that should round out your characters and make them nice and creepy.
(Hit!) $18,000 - Dungeon World + Fate Experimental Hack
First mentioned mostly in jest, we weren't expecting so many to ask for a hack of the two systems. But here it is! This is a relatively simple but experimental hack combining Fate elements (like Aspects) and Dungeon World. It is likely unstable and has a 34% chance to blow up in your face, but it will still be fun and crazy!
(Hit!) $20,000 - New Class: "The Skirmisher"
A brand new class playbook for both Dungeon World and Fate. It's only half baked at this point, but here's what we're thinking! Picture a cross between Brad Pitt (Achilles) in Troy, Legolas, and Grey Worm from Game of Thrones. These are warriors that live at medium range. Specializing in weapons like the shield, spear, and warbow, they are a mix of strength and dexterity, dancing in and out of melee range. More details to come!
But that's not all, let's make 20k a BIG goal...
(Hit!) $20,000 - Grim World gets a Creative Commons License
That's right, if and when we hit this goal, all of the text in Grim World will be licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License (CC BY 3.0). AKA the same license Dungeon World and Fate use! We hope this is a good way of giving back to the community. The license would go into affect early next year (2014). Note: Licensing for Community Contributions will be decided by the submitter.
All of the reward tiers include shipping within the continental US.
If you’re outside the continental US and you’d like a limited edition physical Grim World book and/or poster, please add $20 to your pledge total to account for shipping. We know international shipping can be expensive, so you may want to consider splitting the costs with a few friends, remember:
You can add up to 3 additional books for $30 each and only pay the extra shipping fee once if you want to pool together with friends.
Trenton Kennedy, Design
Trenton got his start in the game industry working for Sony Online Entertainment in the perpetually weird city of Austin, TX. He worked on DC Universe Online for several years mostly as a content designer. After working on another unannounced project, he decided it was time to go indie and make his own (probably bad) decisions. Now he spends his days programming in Unity, GMing Dungeon World, and slowly driving Deanna insane.
Deanna Nygren, Art
Deanna is a jane-of-all-trades artist and loves it! Before starting her own studio and freelancing, she worked as a Senior Artist for Certain Affinity in Austin, TX. While at Certain Affinity she worked on Halo 4, Halo Anniversary, and Crimson Alliance (XBLA). Check out her portfolio here. Deanna loves playing her Druid, Kayna, in Dungeon World. She is most excited about the Shaman in Grim World! She has also had way too much fun playtesting the classes in Grim World to help Trent get it to where it is now. Also, she is a baby and refuses to GM.

First and foremost, because all the cool kids are doing it. Wait, that's a terrible (but not entirely invalid) answer. The real reason is to get an awesome full color, limited edition book printed, personalized, and distributed to all of you fabulous people! Plus posters! And Boldlittles!
Secondly, if funded, we'll be able to spend the time finishing and delivering the heavy sheen of polish Grim World and all of you deserve. If the Kickstarter does particularly well, it also means we get to spend the time adding even more fibery goodness to Grim World for your digestive enjoyment.
An unsuccessful, unfunded Grim World is a sign of the impending apocalypse and it's best we avoid breaking anymore seals at least until A Dream of Spring is out. Additionally, it means no physical Grim World book or posters. It means the project goes back in a drawer and/or it doesn't get the time and polish it desires. It means Trenton has to go back to killing Deanna's characters off-camera. Nobody wants that.
Risks and challenges
Grim World is made by Boldly Games LLC, created by us, Deanna Nygren and Trenton Kennedy. We work full-time on creating projects like this for you. We are both super excited about Grim World and have every intention to see it finished. A lot of Grim World is already complete, waiting for your input and our final touches (and to get printed!). Much of the art for the supplement has already been completed and is waiting to be put in the book.
Deanna has many years of freelance art experience and is great with time management and commitments. She has done her research and has talked with numerous printing companies, gotten quotes and time estimates, fully budgeted out everything needed, with buffer room! We have backup plans for our backup plans. We want to make this as low risk as possible for all our sakes.
Grim World is our #1 priority and will be until you get your rewards. However, it is always possible that we run into bumps with our printing service which could push our product date out. We promise to communicate to all of you every step of the way.
If one of us gets hit by a bus, the other will be sad and there will likely be a delay, but they will carry on and get you your rewards. If both of us are hit by buses, after suing the bus department, someone in our family will go through our computers (please don't look in the "boring spreadsheets" folder) and upload all asset files for the community.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
